Safety inf ormation • This device has not been designed for use by people (including childr en) with restricted physical, sensory or intellectual abilities or lack of experience and/or knowledge, unless they are supervised by a responsible person (for their own safety) or have r eceived instructions on how to use the device.
Risk of electric shock! • Only connect the device to a properly installed and ear thed mains socket. The mains v oltage must agree with that stated on the device’s specification plate. • Damaged adapters or mains cables should be ex changed immediately by an authorised technician or the Customer Ser vice in order to avoid risks.
• Y ou must not open or repair the device’ s housing. This can be dangerous and renders the w arranty null and void. • Protect the device fr om moisture and spray ed water . Therefore do not place any objects filled with water (e.g. vases) on or near the device.
• Due to the charging current, only batteries with appropriate c apacities may be charged: Ni-MH batteries: - AA min. 1750 mAh/max. 2700 mAh - AAA min.
• Use the Rapid Batter y Charger ex clusively with the supplied p ower adapter resp. vehicle-adapter . Do not use the power adapter and the vehicle- adapter with appliances other than th e R apid Batter y Charger .
• Always stor e batteries out of the reach of children! There is a danger that children could swallo w batteries! Due to the poisonous content of batteries there is a danger to life! • When charging batteries nev er leave the Universal Battery Charger unsuper vised.
Thunder storms! Devices connected to mains pow er can be damaged during a thunder storm. If there is a thunder storm, always remo ve the mains plug from the sock et.
Notes on handling batteries The device uses batteries. Please note the following on handling batteries: Risk of explosion! Do not throw batteries into a fir e. Do not rechar ge batteries. • Never open, solder or w eld batteries. There is a risk of explosion and injury! • Check batteries regularly .
Commissioning Stationar y operation • Remov e all components – Rapid Battery Charger , pow er adapter y , vehicle-adapter u and batteries – from the packaging. • Before taking the Rapid Battery Charger into use, check that all items are complete/available and free of visible damage.
Mobile operation With the supplied vehicle-adapter u you can also connect the Rapid Battery Charger to the 12-V cigar lighter socket of a v ehicle or into the 12-V on-board pow er supply socket of a v ehicle. Thereby , you simply use the vehicle-adapter u instead of the pow er adapter y .
Note: Also ensure that all possible soiling (e.g. r emains of ash) is remov ed from the inside of the cigar lighter sock et! Otherwise, it could lead to a malfunction in the operation of the R apid Ba.
Note: It is possible that the cigar-lighter only functions with a switched-on v ehicle ignition. If you are unsure, consult the vehicle handbook. Caution! For vehicles in which the cigar lighter r esp. onboard pow er sock ets also function with a switched-off vehicle ignition: Only use the Rapid Battery Charger with the engine running.
Charging batteries Danger! Charge exclusiv ely rapid rec hargable batteries of the types "Ni-Cd" and "Ni-MH". NEVER rechar ge batteries of other types or non-rechar gable batteries. These are not suit- able for rechar ging. This could irreparably damage the Rapid Battery Charger and the inserted batteries.
• Place the selector switch e into the position Ni-MH if you w ant to charge Ni-MH batteries. • Place the selector switch e into the position Ni-Cd if you w ant to charge Ni-Cd batteries.
The various displays hav e the following meanings: • The control lamp w blinks r ed: - Defective batteries or non-rechargeable batteries have been identified. Remo ve the inserted batter ies from the R apid Batter y Charger . • The control lamp w does not glo w: - The batteries have not been inserted correctly into the charging slots t .
• Unplug the AC adapter y fr om the mains power socket or the car adapter u fr om the cigar lighter socket and allo w the batteries to cool down. Af ter war ds you can remo ve the charged batteries from the Rapid Battery Charger .
Timer Control In addition, this batter y charger has a timer control which, af ter 2 hours, automatically switches it ov er to the maintenance charge. This ser ves as an additional pr otection against ov ercharging should the charge completion identifier not react, possibly due to a defective battery .
Charging the USB device Warning! Check to ensure that the curr ent consumption of the USB device is not higher than 500 mA. Further information is provided in the operating manual of your USB device. • Inser t the USB connector of the USB device into the USB por t r of the charger .
T roubleshooting The Rapid Battery Charger displays no functions With mains power operation: • Check to see if the low-tension plug on the cable of the power adap ter y is cor rectly inserted into the pow er adapter connection q . • Check to see if the power sock et into which t he pow er adapter y has been inser ted is "live".
The inser ted batteries are not being charged: • Check that the batteries are being inser ted in accord with their polarity . • Check to see if you hav e inser ted batteries suit- able for ch ar ging into the Rapid Battery Charger.
Cleaning Risk of injury from electric shock: • Nev er immerse the device’ s parts into water or other liquids! • Do not allow liquid to pene trate the housing.
Disposal Nev er dispose of the device in the normal household rubbish. Dispose of the device using an appro ved disposal company or using local disposal facilities. This product is subject to Eur opean Directive 2002/96/EC. Please follow the currently valid r egulations.
Disposal of batteries! Batteries must not be disposed of in the household waste. Ev er y consumer is legally obliged to dispose of batteries at a collection site of his community / city district or at a retail store. This obligation is intended to ensure that batteries are disposed of in a n e nv ir onmentally safe fashion.
W arranty and Ser vice The warranty for this appliance is for 3 years fr om the date of purchase. The appliance has been manufactured with care and meticulously e xamined before delivery . Please retain y our receipt as proof of purchase. In the ev ent of a warranty claim, please make contact b y telephone with our Ser vice Depar t- ment.
The warranty period will not be e xtended by repairs made under warranty . This applies also to replaced and repaired parts. Any damage and defects e xtant on purchase must be reported immediately af ter un- packing the appliance, at the latest, two days after the purchase date.
