10 Basics SIM car d The SIM car d contains y our phone number , service details, and phonebook/ message memory . Y our phone supports both 1.8 V and 3 V SIM cards. Some legacy SIM car ds may not function with y our phone. Y ou should consult with y our mobile opera tor for a r eplacement SIM car d.

12 Basics Batt ery Y our phone uses a rechar geable battery . Please use only original batteries and acc essories that came with your phone or r eplacements that w e recommend. How long the ba ttery can last befor e it needs rechar ging depends on how y ou use y our phone.
13 Basics Inserting the battery Hold y our phone securely with the fr ont facing do wn. With y our thumb or finger , lift the battery c ompartment co v er off from the small opening on the left side of y our phone. Insert the battery (with its e xposed copper c ontacts first) into the ba ttery compartment.
14 Basics Char ging the battery The ba ttery is partially char ged when shipped. Before y ou turn on and start using y our phone, it is r ecommended that y ou charge the battery . Some batteries perf orm best after se ver al full charge/ dischar ge cy cles.

16 Getting started Getting s tarted Setting up y our phone for the firs t time When y ou switch on y our phone for the first time, y ou’ll be asked t o set up your phone. Y ou can choose your language , how y ou want t o connect to the Internet, and whether y ou want y our current loca tion to be automatically det ected.
17 Getting started Extended Home scr een As y ou start to do mor e things with y our phone, you might find that one Home scr een is not enough. No problem. Y ou can use up to six e xtra scr eens. 19 Getting started Notification icons A busy lif e means a busy phone. Notifica tion icons on the s tatus bar mak e it easy f or y ou to keep on t op of your messages, calendar e vents and alarms.

21 Getting started Swit ching between r ecently-opened apps On the Notifications panel, y ou can easily access up t o eight apps you just r ecently opened. 1. Pres s and hold the status bar , then slide your finger do wnwar d to open the Notifications panel.
22 Getting started Y ou can also change the type of USB connection on-the-fly , without having t o disconnect and r econnect y our phone. Slide open the Notifications panel, and then tap the notification that sa ys “Select to change USB c onnection type” to open the Connect to PC scr een again.

24 Getting s tarted Quickly looking up information on the W eb Quick Lookup helps y ou learn about something right on the spot. When y ou enter a new w ord or phr ase, y ou can readily look it up in popular w ebsites or sear ch services such as Wikipedia, Google Sear ch, Y ouT ube, Google T ranslat e, and Google Dictionary .
25 Getting started A djusting the v olume Adjus ting the ringer volume changes the v olume lev el of the phone ringtone, while adjusting the media v olume changes the volume le vel of sound notifications and music or video playback.
26 Getting started Sleep mode Sleep mode sav es battery po wer b y putting your phone int o a lo w pow er state while the display is off . It also stops ac cidental button pr esses when the phone’s in y our bag or pock et. Y ou’ll still r eceiv e messages and calls though.

29 Personalizing Applying a ne w skin Personalize be yond the Home scr een by applying a ne w skin. Skins are set t o giv e a differ ent look and feel to most of y our phone’s onscr een buttons, application scr eens, option menus, and other items. Fr om the Home screen, tap > Skin .

32 Personalizing Renaming a folder T ap the folder t o open it. Pr ess and hold the folder windo w’s title bar . Enter a ne w folder name and then tap OK . Rearr anging or remo ving widgets and icons on y our Home scr een Rearr ange the widgets and icons on y our Home screen t o give r oom for adding more items t o the Home screen.
33 Personalizing Rearr anging the Home screen Reor der your Home scr een panels in any wa y that fits how y ou use the Home screen. For e xample, mo ve the panels with fr equently-used widgets, shortcuts, and f olders closer to the main Home scr een. 1.
34 Personalizing Changing y our ringt ones and alarms Select, crea te, and do wnload sound sets ( different collections of ringt one, notification sounds, and alarm) so that y ou can instantly change from subtle ringt one and notification sounds while y ou’re in the office int o something fun when you’r e out with friends.
35 Personalizing Changing the notification sounds Fr om the Home screen, tap > Notification sound . 2. Choose the type of notification that y ou want to change . 3. Scr oll through the a vailable tones and tap the it em you w ant to use . A sample tone briefly pla ys when selected.
36 Personalizing Rearr anging or hiding application tabs Y ou can rearr ange the tabs at the bottom of some of y our phone’s apps t o prioritize the types of information y ou frequently use or r emov e the tabs you don’t r eally need.
37 Phone calls Phone calls Making calls Most SIM car ds come with a PIN (personal identification number) set by y our mobile operat or . If y ou’re ask ed for a PIN, enter it and then tap OK . If y ou enter the wr ong PIN three times, y our SIM card is blocked.
38 Phone calls What is Smart dial? The phone dialer’s Smart Dial fea ture mak es it quick and easy for y ou to plac e a call. Simply enter the phone number or firs t fe w letters of the person’s name y ou want to call.
39 Phone calls Calling a phone number in an email Fr om the Home screen, tap > Mail . In y our email account’ s inbox, tap the email that c ontains the phone number to call. In the email body , tap the phone number . A selection menu then pops up and the phone number is highlighted.
40 Phone calls Rec eiving calls When y ou rec eiv e a phone call fr om a contact, the Inc oming call screen appears and display s the caller ID icon, name, and phone number of the calling party .
41 Phone calls Muting the ringing sound without rejecting the call Do one of the follo wing: Pr ess the V OLUME DO WN or V OLUME UP button. Pr ess the PO WER button. Place the phone f ace down on a le veled surf ace. If the phone is already f acing down, the phone will still ring when ther e are subsequent incoming calls.
42 Phone calls Using in-call options When a call is in pr ogress, use the butt ons onscreen to mut e or unmute the microphone or t o turn on or off the speakerphone. Y ou can also pres s MENU and choose whether to add a call, plac e the call on hold, mute the microphone , and more .
43 Phone calls T urning the speak erphone on or off during a call T o turn the speak erphone on, y ou can do any of the f ollowing: Flip y our phone ov er during a call (be sure that Flip for speak er is selected in HOME > MENU > Settings > Sound ).
44 Phone calls Using Call hist ory Use the Call history t o check missed calls, y our dialed numbers and rec eived calls. Checking a missed call Y ou will see the missed call icon in the status bar when y ou miss a call. 1. Slide open the Notifications panel to check who the caller is.
45 Phone calls Clearing the call hist ory list On the Call hist ory screen, y ou can do the follo wing: T o remo ve one name or number fr om the list, press and hold the name or number , and then tap Delete from call his tory . T o clear the entire lis t, press MENU , and then tap Delete all .
46 Phone calls Call servic es Fr om y our phone, y ou’ll be able to acc ess and change the settings of various call services for y our phone. Contact y our mobile operator t o find out about the availability of call servic es. Fr om the Home screen, pr ess MENU and then tap Settings > Call .
4 7 People People About People With the People app , you can sync y our phone with contacts fr om your Google Ac count, comput er , and Fac ebook. Y ou can also sync with work c ontacts from the Ex change Activ eSync Serv er in y our workplace . T o find out how , see “W ays of getting contacts int o your phone.
48 People Setting up My c ontact car d My contact car d pro vides a conv enient wa y to stor e your personal c ontact information so that y ou can easily send it via SMS, MMS, email, or Bluetooth. Fr om the Home screen, tap > People . On the All tab of the People scr een, tap Me .
49 People Y our ne w HT C phone then tries to pair with your old phone . Y ou’ll then see a security passk ey on the T ransf er Data screen. 6. On your old phone, ent er this passke y or simply confirm it. 7. Select the Contacts check bo x (and other supported types of data y ou want to import), and then tap Ne xt .
50 People Importing a contact fr om an Ex change Activ eSync ac count Y ou can search for a w ork contact from y our Ex change Activ eSync account, and then cop y it to y our phone. Y ou need to hav e your Ex change Activ eSync ac count set up on y our phone first.

57 P eople Sending a message or email t o a group Y ou will be charged b y your mobile service pr ovider f or each message sent. For e xample, if y ou send a message to a gr oup of five people , y ou will be charged f or five messages. Fr om the Home screen, tap > People .
58 People People widget Put the group of people y ou contact most right on the Home scr een of y our phone b y adding them as the People widget. Using the People widget, y ou can instantly place a call, send a message, or vie w details of a fa v orite contact with a single tap.
59 K eyboar d K e yboar d Using the onscr een ke yboard When y ou start an app or select a field that r equires t ext or numbers, the onscr een ke yboard bec omes av ailable. Aft er entering y our te xt, you can tap or press BA CK to close the onscreen ke yboard.

61 K eyboard Ent ering w ords with pr edictiv e te xt The onscr een ke yboard has pr edictive t e xt to help you type quickly and ac curat ely . Pr edictiv e te xt input is enabled by def ault, and wor d suggestions ar e display ed as you type.

67 Mes sages Sending a t e xt message (SMS) If y ou ex ceed the limit on the number of char acters f or a single te xt message, y our te xt message will be deliv ered as one but will be billed as mor e than one message. Fr om the Home screen, tap > Messages .
68 Messages Sending a multimedia message (MMS) T o compose a multimedia mes sage, start b y creating a ne w te xt message. Then choose the type of attachment to include in y our message. Fr om the Home screen, tap > Messages . On the All messages scr een, tap Compose message .
69 Messages Cr eating a slidesho w In a multimedia message, y ou can add slides, each containing a phot o, video , or audio. In the multimedia message y ou’re c omposing, tap > Slidesho w . On the Edit slidesho w screen, tap A dd slide . T ap Slide 1 .

71 Messages Vie wing and saving an a ttachment from a multimedia message If y ou are conc erned about the size of your da ta downloads, check the multimedia message siz e first befor e you do wnload it. When Aut o-retriev e in MMS settings is disabled, only the message header is downloaded.
72 Messages Managing message c on v ersations Pr otecting a mes sage from deletion Y ou can lock a message so that it will not be deleted e ven if y ou delete the other messages in the c onv ersation. On the All messages scr een, tap a contact ( or phone number) to displa y the e xchange of messages with tha t contact.
73 Messages Deleting a con versa tion On the All messages scr een, press and hold a c ontact (or phone number) whose messages y ou want to delet e, and then tap Delete . While looking at the e x change of messages in a con versation, y ou can also press MENU and then tap More > Delet e > Delete thread .

84 Social Social F acebook F acebook for HT C Sense If y ou signed in to your F acebook acc ount when you turned on and set up y our phone for the first time , that means your F acebook acc ount is linked t o Fac ebook for HT C Sense on y our phone.
85 Social Check y our friends’ Facebook s tatus updates and pos t your o wn updates in Friend Str eam. See “Friend Stream” to find out the things y ou can do on the Friend Str eam app. A dd y our F acebook e vents and y our friends’ birthday s to the Calendar app.
86 Social If y ou hav e more than one F acebook account, y ou may sign in t o the Fac ebook app using y our second ac count, sinc e the Fac ebook app does not share the same login cr edentials as Fac ebook for HT C Sense.
87 Social Friend Str eam Friend Str eam connects you t o your social netw orks. Share and get updat es from friends in popular netw orks like F acebook and T witter in a single feed. W ith Friend Str eam, you can easily tr ack your friends’ status mes sages, photo uploads, notifications, and mor e — or comment and post y our own.

91 Social Chatting in Google T alk Google T alk is Google’s ins tant messaging progr am. It lets you c ommunicate with other people that also use Google T alk. If y ou signed in to your Google A ccount when y ou first set up the phone, y ou are alr eady signed in to Google T alk.
92 Social T ap y our picture, and then tap Remo v e to r emov e your phot o, or Change to select another picture on the s torage car d. Note that if y ou’ve select ed a big pictur e, y ou will be asked to cr op it.
93 Email Email Using Gmail Gmail is Google’ s web-based email service . When y ou first set up y our phone, mak e sure y ou sign into your Google A ccount so y ou can send and rec eive Gmail messages. If y ou didn’t do so, go to the A ccounts & s ync setting to sign in.
94 Email Select messages and con versations T ap the box ( ) before the email or c onv ersation. Then tap the onscreen butt ons at the bottom to choose what t o do with the selected messages or c onv ersations.
95 Email 3. In the Inbox, tap the unr ead email or the conv ersation with the unr ead email to view it. 4. On the email message or c onv ersation, do any of the follo wing: Scr oll through the mes sages in the conv ersation by s wiping your finger up or down the scr een.

When vie wing your Inbo x or another con v ersation list, tap the name of the current label a t the top left of the screen t o open the labels selection screen.
98 Email Reply all Select this check bo x if you w ant to r eplace the Reply button ( ) in message headers with the R eply all button ( ), so y ou don’t need to tap the arr ow ( ) to ac cess it. Auto-adv ance Select which con versation t o display aft er you delete or ar chive a con versation.
99 Email Using Mail Use the Mail app to add y our webmail and other POP3 or IMAP email ac counts. Y ou can also set up and use y our Exchange A ctiveS ync email on y our phone.
100 Email Checking y our Mail inbox When y ou open the Mail app, it display s the inbox of one of y our email accounts tha t y ou’ve set up on y our phone. T o switch betw een email accounts, tap the bar tha t show s the current email ac count, and then tap another ac count.
