Control-pane l display icons Icon Purpose Shows that a wired network connection exists. Shows that a wireless network connection exists. The signal stre ngth is indicated by the number of curved lines. This is for infrastructu re mode. For more information, see Set up the pr inter for wireless communication.
Change printer settings Use the co ntrol panel to chan ge the printer’s mode and settin gs, print reports, or get he lp for the printer. TIP: If the printer i s connected to a computer, you can a ls.
Finding the printer model number In addition to the model name that appe ars on the front of the printer, this pri nter has a specific mod el number. Use t h is number to obt ain support and to ident ify the supplies and accessories available for your print er.
Recommended pape rs for printing and copyin g If you want t h e best print qu ality, HP recomme nds using HP papers that are specif ically designed for t he type of project you are printing. Depending on your country/ region, some of these papers might not b e available.

• When loading th e trays and ADF, make sure the medi a is loaded correctly. For more informatio n, see Load media or Load an original in the automatic document feeder (ADF). • Do not overload the tray or ADF. For more information, see Media specif ications.
3. Close the l id. Load an original in the auto matic document feeder (ADF) You can copy, scan, or fa x a one-sided, si ngle- or multiple-pag e, A4- or Lett er-size document by placing it in the automatic document fee der tray. CAUTION: Do not load photos in the ADF; th is might cause damag e to your photos.
2. Slide the widt h guides inward until they stop at the left and right edges of the media. NOTE: Remove all orig inals from t he document fee der tray before lifting the li d on the printer. Load media This section pro vides instruction s for loading media into the p rinter.
3. Insert the media print-sid e down along the right of the main tray. Ma ke sure the media aligns with t he right and back edges of the tray and does not exceed the l ine marking in the tray. 2 1 NOTE: Do not load paper w hile the printer is printing.
Load Envelopes To load enve lopes Use these inst ructions to load an envelo pe 1. Lift the outp ut tray. 2. Slide the pap er width gu ide out as far as po ssible. NOTE: If you are loading l arger-sized media, pull th e input tray to extend it . 3. Load envelopes accordin g to the graphic.
5. Lower the outpu t tray. 6. Pull out the t ray extender. Load cards an d photo paper To load c ards and photo pap er Use these instructio ns to load photo paper. 1. Lift the output tray. 2. Slide the paper w idth guide out as far as po ssible. NOTE: If you are load ing larger-sized media, pull th e input tray t o extend it .
Load tr ansparencies To load tr ansparen cies Use these instructions to lo ad transparencies. 1. Lift the outp ut tray. 2. Slide the pap er width gu ide out as far as po ssible. NOTE: If you are loading l arger-sized media, pull th e input tray to extend it .
3. Insert the media print-sid e down along the right of the main tray. Ma ke sure the media aligns with t he right and back edges of the tray and does not exceed the l ine marking in the tray. NOTE: Do not load paper w hile the printer is printing. 4.
Maintain the printer This section provid es instructions for keeping the p rinter in t op working condition. Pe rform these mainten ance procedures as necessary.
3. Clean the gla ss by using a soft, lint-free clo th that has bee n sprayed with a mil d glass cleaner. D ry the gl ass with a dry, so ft, lint-free cloth. CAUTION: Use only glass cleaner t o clean the scanner g lass. Avoi d cleaners that cont ain abrasives, acetone, benzene, and carbon t etrachloride, all of which can damage the scanner glass.
If you have lines or dust a p pearing on scanned documents or faxes, clean the plastic strip in the ADF. To clean the rollers or separator pad 1. Remove all original s from the document fee der tray. 2. Lift the auto matic document feeder cover (1). This provides ea sy access to the rol l ers (2) and se parator pad (3).
To clean th e plastic str ip inside the au tomatic docume nt feeder Use these instructio ns to clean the plastic strip inside t he ADF. 1. Turn off the p rinter and unplug the power cord . For more informa tion, see Turn off the printer. NOTE: Depending ho w long the printer is unplugg ed, the date and tim e might be erased.
3. Continue li fting the automatic docu ment feeder cover to the verti cal position. 4. Lift the au tomatic docu ment feeder m echanism. 5. Clean the plastic strip with a so ft cloth or sponge sl ightly moist ened with a non abrasive glass cleaner.
6. Gently lowe r the automati c document feeder mechanism to avoid dislod ging the plastic strip, a nd then close the cover of the aut omatic document feede r. 7. Plug in the p ower cord, and then turn on the pr inter. NOTE: If you stil l see dust or lines on scans after clea ning the pla stic strip, you may need to order a new plast i c strip.
2P r i n t Most print se ttings are a utomatically h andled by th e software appli cation. C hange the settings m anually only when you want to chan ge print quali ty, print on specific t ypes of paper, or use special feat ures. For more information about selecti ng the best prin t media for your documents, see Select pr int media.
Print docume nts (Window s) 1. Load paper in the t r ay. For more inf o rmation, se e Load media. 2. On the F ile menu in your software applicati on, click Print . 3. Make sure the printer you wan t to use is sele cted. 4. To change setting s, click the option that open s the printer Properties dial og box.
5. Change the pape r orientat ion on the Layou t tab, and paper source, media type, paper size, and qualit y settings on the Paper/Quality tab. To print in bl ack and white, click the Ad vanced tab , and then change the Print in Gr ayscale optio n. 6.
6. Click the Paper/Quality tab, and then select the appropriate envelope t ype from the Paper Size drop-do wn list. TIP: You can chan ge more option s for the print job by using the features available on the other tabs i n the dialog box. 7. Click OK , and then click Print or OK to begin printing.
4. Click Paper Type/ Quality from the pop-up menu (l ocated below the Orien tation setting), and th en select the following set tings: • Paper Type: The app ropriate phot o paper type • Quality: Best or Maximum dpi NOTE: Click the blue d isclosure triang le next to t he Printer selection to access these optio ns.
- or - a . Touch a photo you wan t to print. The ph oto enlarges and gives you several editing options. • Touch th e up and down arrows to specify the numb er of copies you want to print. • Touch th e Full Scre en ico n to enla rge th e photo to fill t he screen.
NOTE: With certain typ es of paper, you can print on both sid es of a sheet of paper (called “two-sided pri nting” or “duplex printin g ”). For more informa tion, see Two -sided printin g (duplexing ). Follow the instructions for your operating system.
Print borderle ss documents (Wind ows) 1. Load paper in the t r ay. For more inf o rmation, se e Load media. 2. On the F ile menu in your software applicati on, click Print . 3. Make sure the printer you wan t to use is sele cted. 4. To change setting s, click the option that open s the printer Properties dial og box.
Follow th e instructions on the printer’ s control pane l to enable and set up the printer’s Web Services. For more inf ormation, see www.hp.com/go/ePrintCen ter. Two-sided printing (duplexing) With certain t ypes of paper, you can print o n both sides of a sheet of pa per (called “two- sided printing ” or “duplex printing”).
3 Scan You can use the printe r’s control panel t o scan documents, photos, and other or iginals and send them to a variet y of destinati ons, such as a folde r on a compute r. You can also scan these origin als from your computer using ei ther the HP software provided with the printer or TWAIN-compliant or WIA-compli ant programs.
3. Touch Do cument Type to select the type of document you want to save. Make changes to scan o ptions, if needed. 4. Touch Sta rt Scan . To sca n an original fr om HP printer s oftware 1. Load your origin al print-sid e down in th e right-front co rner of the gl ass or in the AD F.
To scan an orig inal from the printer c ontrol panel Use the follow ing instructions to scan a large do cument. 1. Touch Scan , and then sele ct the Me mory Device . 2. Touch Document Type to choose the type of docu ment you want to save. Make changes to sca n options, if need ed.
Scan using Webscan Webscan is a feat ure of the embedded Web server t hat lets you scan photos an d documents from yo ur printer to your computer using a Web br owser. This feat ure is availabl e even if you did not i nstall the p rinter software on your computer.
◦ The text is tight ly spaced. For exam ple, if the te xt that the software conve rts has missing or combined ch aracters, "rn" might appear as "m." ◦ The text is on a colore d background. Colored backg rounds can cause images i n the foregr ound to blend too much.
4 Copy You can produce high-qua lity color and grayscale copies on a variety of paper types and sizes. NOTE: If you are copying a do cument when a f ax arrives, the fax is stored in the printer's memory unt il the copying finishes. This can reduce the nu mber of fax pages stored in me mory.
3. Touch the A3/11 x17 checkbox on the Cop y screen, and then se lect Settings to change any other copy sett ings. 4. Select Black to make a black-and-white copy, or Color to make a color copy. 5. Select the size of the origin al. 6. Load the orig inal according t o the animation, and th en select Scan .
5F a x You can use the pri nter to send and rece ive faxes, in cluding color faxes. You can schedule faxes t o be sent at a lat er time and set up speed-dials to send faxes quickly and easily to frequ ently used numbers.
NOTE: If you need pri n ted confir mation that your faxes were successfully sent, enable fax confi rmation befo re sending any faxes. TIP: You can also send a fax m anually from a phone or by using mo nitor dialing. These feature s allow you to con trol the pace of yo ur dialing.
6. Click Print or OK . 7. Enter the fax nu mber and other inform ation for the recipient, change any further settings for the fax, and then click Send Fax . The printer be gins dialing th e fax number and faxing t he document. Mac OS X 1. Open the docu ment on your computer that you want to fax.
4. If the recipient answers the telepho ne, you can engage in a co nversation bef ore sending your fax. NOTE: If a fa x machin e answers t he call, y ou will hear fax t ones fr om the receiving fax machine. Proceed to the next step to transmit t he fax.
you can immediate ly remove the originals from the documen t feeder tray or scanner glass. NOTE: You can only send a black-and -white fax from me mory. To send a fax from memor y 1. Load your orig inals. For ad ditional information, see Load an original on the scanner glass or Load an orig inal in the automatic docum ent feeder (ADF).
To cancel a sc heduled fax 1. Touch the Send F ax Later message on the display. – OR – Touch Fax , and then select Fax Settings . 2. Touch Cance l Scheduled Fa x . Send a fax to multiple re cipients You can send a fax to mult iple recipients at once by groupi ng individual speed d ial entries into group speed dia l entries.
Receive a fax You can receive faxes automatical ly or manually. If you turn off the Auto Answer option, you must receive faxes man ually. If you turn on the Auto Answer option (the default setting), th e printer automati cally answers incoming calls and rece ives faxes afte r the number of ri ngs that are specified by t he Rings to Answer se tting.
4. If you are currently on the phone with the sender, instruct the sender to press Start on their fax machine. 5. When you hear fax ton e s from a sending fa x machine, do the following: a . Touch Fax , and then select Start Black or Start Color . b .
NOTE: After the memory becomes full, the ol dest , printed faxes are ove r written as new faxes are received . If all the sto red faxes are unprin ted, the print er does not receive any fax calls until you print or delet e the faxes from memory. You might also want to d elete the faxes in m emory for security or p rivacy pu rposes.
4. Touch On (Print and Fo rward) to print an d forward the fa x, or select On (Forward) to forward the fax. NOTE: If the printer is not able to forward the fax to th e designat ed fax machine (for example, if it is not turned on ), the print er prints the fax.
Block un wanted fa x num bers If you subscribe to a caller ID service thro ugh your phone provider, you can bl ock specific fax numbers so the printer does n ot print faxe s received from those numbers.
4. Touch Rem ove Numbers . 5. Touch the number you wa nt to remove, and then select OK . Print a Junk Fax Rep ort Use the follow ing procedure to print a list of blocke d junk fax numbers. To print a Junk Fax Re port 1. Touch right arrow , and then select Setup .
Activate Fax to PC an d Fax to Mac On a computer run ning Windows, you can use the Digital Fax Setu p Wizard to activate Fax to PC. On a Macint osh computer, yo u can use the HP Utility. To set up Fax t o PC (Windo ws) 1. Open the HP pri nter software .
Turn off Fax to PC or Fax to Mac 1. Touch (right arrow), and t hen select Setup . 2. Touch Fax Setup , touch Basic Fax Setup , an d then touch Fax to PC . 3. Touch Turn Off . Set up speed-dial entries You can set up frequen tly used fa x numbers as spe ed-dial entries.
4. If you want to change the fax numb er, type the new number, and then touch Next . NOTE: Be sure to include an y pauses or other required numbers, such as an area code, an access code fo r numbers outside a PBX sy stem (usually a 9 or 0), or a long-distance prefix.
Print a list of speed-d ial entries To print a list of all of the speed-dial entries that have b een set up, co mplete the followin g steps: 1. Load paper in the t r ay. For more inf o rmation, se e Load media. 2. On the printer’s cont rol panel, touch right arrow , an d then touch Setup .
To set the answe r mode 1. Touch righ t arrow , and then select Setup . 2. Touch Fax Setup , and then select Basic Fax Setup . 3. Touch Au to Answer , and then select On or Off . When Au to Answer is On , t he printer answers call s automatically. When Auto Answer is Off , it does not answer call s.
NOTE: The printer can not receive faxes when the main ph one number is off the hook. To change the answ er ring pattern for distinctiv e ring 1. Verify that the printer is set to answer fax call s automatically. 2. Touch right arrow , and then select Setup .
Set the re dial opti ons If the printer w as unable to send a fax because the receiving fax machine d id not answer or was busy, t he printer atte mpts to redial based on the setti ngs for the busy-redial and no-answer-re dial options. U se the following procedu re to turn the options on or off.
Set the fax so und volume Use this procedu re to increase or decrease the volume of the fax sounds. To set the fax sound volume 1. Touch right arrow , and then select Setup . 2. Touch Fax Setup , an d then select Basic Fa x Setup . 3. Touch down arrow , and then select Fax Sound Volume .
TIP: Support for trad itional fax tra nsmission over any Internet protocol telephone systems are often limited. If you experience problems faxing, tr y using a slower fax speed or disa bling the fax erro r-correction m ode (ECM). However, if you turn off ECM, you cannot send and receive color faxe s.
NOTE: You can include an image of the first pa ge of the fax on t he Fax Sent Confirmation report if you choose On (F ax Send) or On (Sen d and Receive) , and i f you scan the fax to send from memory. To enable fax confi r mation 1. Touch right arrow , and then select Setup .
Print and vie w the fax log You can print a lo g of faxes that have been receive d and sent by the p rinter. To print the fax log from the printer control p anel 1. Touch righ t arrow , and then select Setup . 2. Touch Fax Setup , touch down arrow , and then select Fax Reports .
To view the Call History 1. Touch right arrow , and then select Fax . 2. Touch (Call History). Use reports 71.

7 Work with ink cartridges To ensure the best prin t quality from the pr inter, you will ne ed to perform some simple maintenance proced ures. This section provides guideline s for handling the ink cart ridges, instructions f or replacin g the ink cart ridges, and aligning an d cleani ng the print head.
• Handle ink cartri dges carefully. Dropp ing, jarring, or rough handling during installation can cause temp orary printing problems. • If you are tra nsporting the printer, do the f ollowing to prevent ink leaking from the printer or othe r damage from o ccurring to th e printer: ◦ Make sure you tu rn off the printer by pressing Power .
NOTE: At this ti me, some p ortions o f the HP W eb site ar e availa ble in En glish on ly. CAUTION: Wait until you ha ve a new ink cartridge availabl e before remo ving the old ink cartridge. Do no t leave the ink cartrid ge outside of the printer for a n extended period of ti me.
5. Twist the orange cap to snap it off . NOTE: Make sure the plastic tab is entirely removed and t h at the l abel is slightl y torn, revealing the vent cha nnel. 6. Using the col ored shaped ic ons for help, slid e the ink cartridge into the e mpty slot until it clicks i nto place and is seate d firmly in the slo t.
Make sure that you insert th e ink cartri dge into the slot that has the same shaped icon and colo r as the on e you are instal ling. 7. Repeat steps 3 thro ugh 6 fo r each ink cartrid ge you are repl acing.

8 Solve a problem The informatio n in this section suggests solution s to common problem s. If your printer is not operati ng correctly a nd those suggestions did no t solve your problem, try using one of the follow ing support services to obtain assistance.
Obtain electronic su pport To fin d suppor t and warranty informat ion, go to the HP W eb site at www.hp.com/ support. If prompted, choose your country/ region, and t hen click Contact HP for information on calling for tech nical supp ort.

Solve printing problems This secti on contai ns the follow ing topic s: • The printer shu ts down unexpectedly • Alignment f a ils • Printer takes a long time to print • Something on the page .
Check the m argin settings Make sure the margi n settings f or the document do not exceed the p r intable a rea of the printer. For more information, see Set minim um margins. Check the col or print setti ngs Make sure Print in Graysca le is not selected in the printer driver.
Make sure that you remove all pap er from the input t r ay before loading the envelopes. Cause: A stack of en velopes was loaded incorrectly . If this did no t solve the i ssue, try the next so lution. Solution 2: Che ck the envelope type Solution: Do not use shiny or embossed enve lopes or envelo pes that have clasps or windows.
Solution 1: Turn on the printer Solution: Look at the Power light locate d on the printer. I f it is no t lit, th e printer is turned off. M ake sure the power cord is f irmly connected to the printer and plugged into a power outlet. Press the Power button to turn on the p r inter.
Some document s take a long ti me to print. If nothing h as printed several minutes after you sent a print job to the printer, check the prin ter's control panel to see if there are any errors. Cause: The printer was busy wi th another task. If this did no t solve the i ssue, try the next so lution.
Solution 9: Check the co nnection from the printer to your computer Solution: Check the c onnect ion from the prin ter to you r compute r. Verify that the USB cable is securely plugged i n to the USB port on the back of t he printer. Make sure the other end of the U SB cable is plugged into a USB port on your computer.
The printer prints meaningl ess characters Try the followi ng solutions to resolve the issue. So lutions are listed in order, with the most likely solution f irst. If the first soluti on does not solve th e problem, conti nue trying the remaining solu tions until the issue is resolved.
Make sure the margi n settings for th e document do not excee d the printable area of the printer. To check your margin settings 1. Preview you r print j ob before s ending it to the printe r. In most softwa re applications, click the File menu, and th en click Print Preview .
• Solution 3: Loa d the stack of papers correctly • Solution 4: Try pri nting with borders Solution 1: Check th e margin settings Solution: Check the printer margins. Make sure the margin se ttings for the document do not exceed the printable area of the printer.
Remove the stack of pap er from the input tray, and then re load the paper. For more information, see: Load m edia Cause: The p aper was loaded i ncorrectly. If this di d not sol ve the issue, try the next so lution. Solution 4: Try printing with borders Solution: Try printing wit h borders by turning of f the borderless option.
Solution 3: Check the ink levels Solution: The ink cartrid ges may be ru nning low on ink. Cause: Ink levels are too low. Solution 4: Clean the pri nthead Solution: Compl ete the printhead cleaning p rocedure. For more informa tion, see Clean t he printhe ad.
Solution 2: Ma ke sure the paper is lo aded corr ectly Solution: Make sure th at the pap er is load ed correctl y in the i nput tray. For more information, see: Load m edia Cause: The pa per was not loa ded correctly. If this di d not sol ve the issue, try the next so lution.
If this did no t solve the i ssue, try the next so lution. Solution 5: Check for a paper jam Solution: Check fo r paper debris in the front of t he printer. Remove any de bris you find. CAUTION: Trying to clear a paper jam from the f ront of the p rinter can d a mage the print mechanism.
Wrong, inaccur a te, or bleeding colors If your print out has one o f the following print quality problems, try the solutions in this section for help. • Colors look wrong For example, gre en was replac ed with blue in your pr intout. • Colors run int o each other, or lo ok like they are smeared on the page.
If this did no t solve the i ssue, try the next so lution. Solution 3: Check the paper type Solution: HP recomm ends that you use HP papers or any other paper type that i s appropriate fo r the printe r. Always make sure the paper you are printing on is flat.
Solution 5: Check the print settings Solution: Check the print settings. • Check th e print sett ings to se e if the color setti n gs are inco rrect.
After cleaning the printhead, p rint a print qu ality report. Evaluate the print quality report to see if the print quality probl em still ex ists. For more information, see: • Printhead main tenance • Print and evaluat e a print quality report Cause: The printhead needed to be cl eaned.
Solution 2: Check th e ink levels Solution: Check the estim ate d ink levels in the ink cartridges. NOTE: Ink level al erts and indicato rs provide estimates for plan ning purposes only. When you re ceive a lo w-ink alert, consider having a replacement cartrid g e available to avoid possible pr inting delays.
After cleaning the printhead, p rint a print qu ality report. Evaluate the print quality report to see if the print quality probl em still ex ists. For more information, see: • Printhead main tenance • Print and evaluat e a print quality report Cause: The printhead needed to be cl eaned.
Solution 2: Use a higher print quality setting Solution: Check the print quality set ting and make sure it is not set too l ow. Print the image wi th a high print qua lity setting, such as Best or Maximum d pi . Cause: The prin t quality setting was set too l ow.

• In the Windo ws Device Manager, make sure that the U SB drivers have not been disabl ed. • If you ar e using a comput er running Win dows, and the computer ca nnot detect the printer, run th e uninstallati on utility (util cccuninstall.bat on the installatio n CD) to perform a clean uninstallat ion of the pri nter driver.
