2 HP Photosmart overview Use the HP Phot osmart to print phot os from a memory card or print labe ls on printable CD/DVD discs. The Two-sided prin ting accessory included wi th the HP Photosmart lets you print on both sides of the page, so you can print brochures and booklets, o r just save paper.

6 Load paper You can load many dif ferent types and sizes of paper in t he HP Photosmart, includi ng letter or A4 pape r, photo paper, transparencies, and envelopes. In addit ion, the HP Photosmart lets you load and print direct ly on the surface of specia lly coated CDs and DVDs.

TIP: To help prevent rips, wrinkles, and curled or bent ed ges, store all paper flat i n a resealable bag. If the pap er is not stored properly, extreme changes in temperature and humidi ty might result in curled paper t hat does not work well in the HP Photosmart.
4. Insert the stack of p aper into the main input tray with the short e dge forward and the print side down. Slide the stack of paper forward unt il it stops. CAUTION: Make sure that the HP Photosma rt is idle and silent when you load paper int o the main input tr ay.
To load u p to 13 x 18 cm (5 x 7 inch) photo paper in the photo tray 1. Raise the p hoto tray lid to load photo paper in the photo tray. 2. Insert t he stack of photo pape r into the photo t ray with the sh ort edge forward and the print side down. Slide the stack of pho to paper forward until it stops.
3. Slide the pa per-length and paper-width guides inward ag ainst the stack of card s until the guides st op. Do not overload the ph oto tray; make sure the stack of cards fits within the photo tray and is no high er than the top of the p aper-width guide.

7 Print from your computer The HP Phot osmart can be used with any so ftware application that allows printing . You can print a range of p rojects, such as borderl ess images, newsletters, gree ting cards, iron-on transfers, and post ers.

Print a poster You can create a poster by pri nting a document on multiple page s. The HP Photosmart prints dotte d lines on some pages to ind icate where to trim the pages before taping them together. To print a poster 1. Make sure you have paper loaded in the input tray.

Make sure the H P Photosmart is the sel ected printer. 4. If your Web browse r support s it, select the items on t he Web page that you wa nt to include in t he printout.

8 Use the photo features The HP Photosmart i s equipp ed with memory card slots that enable yo u to insert a memory card and begi n printing photos witho ut uploading your photos to a computer first .

5. Press the OK button to select the photo you w ant to print. Each time you press the OK button, you incre ment the number of copies of t he selected phot o to be printed. 6. Press the Print Photos button. TIP: While the photo is printing, you can continue scrolling th rough the photos on your memory card.

Remove red-eye The flash on a camera (especial ly on older model cameras) can sometimes cause a subject's eyes to appear red i n your photos . You can remove redness so tha t eyes appear the correct shad e in your photos. NOTE: The changes you m ake to the photo apply only to vie wing and printing the photo.
Before transferring ph otos to your computer, you need to remove the memory card from your digital camera and insert it in the app ropriate memory card slot on the HP Photosmart. NOTE: The HP Photosmart must be co nnected to a computer that has the HP Photosmart Sof tware installed on it.
9 Maintain the HP Photosmart The HP Photosm art requires little mainten ance. You might need to replace, align, or clean your print cartridges from time to time ensure that you r printouts are always o f the highest quality. Thi s section provides instruction s for keeping the HP Photos mart in top working condition.
Handle the print cartridges Before you replace or cle an a print cartridge, you should know the part names and how to handle the print cartridges. 1 Copper-colored contacts 2 Plastic tape with pink pull tab (m ust be removed before installing) 3 Ink nozzles under tape Hold the print cartridges by their black plastic sides, with t he label on top.
Choose the right cart ridge combinatio n Choose the best combinatio n of cartridges for you r print job: • Everyday pri nting: Use a black ca rtridge along with a tri -color cartridge . • Color photos: U se a photo cartridge along w ith a tri-color cartridge.
If you are repla cing the black, photo, or gray ph oto print cartridge, remove the print cartridge f rom the slot on the right . 1 Print cartridge slot for the tri-color print cartridge 2 Print cartridge slot for the black and pho to print cartridges 4.
7. Hold the p rint cartridge with the HP logo on t op, and insert th e new print cartrid ge into the empty cartri dge slo t. Make sure you push the print cartridge i n firmly until it snaps into place. If you are instal ling the tri-color print cartri dge, slide it into the left slot.
10. The HP Photo smart prints a t est page, aligns t he print head, and calibrates th e printer. Recycle or discard the page. A success or failure message ap pears. NOTE: If you have colo red paper loaded in the input tray when you align the printer, the alignment will fail.

To remove the print ca rtridge from the print cartridg e protector ▲ Press down on the t op of t he print cartridge protect or to release the print cartri dge, then gently remove t he print cartridge out of the print cartridge prot ector. Align the pr int cartridges Aligning the print cartrid ges ensures high-quality output.
3. Click the Device Services tab. 4. Click Align the Print Cartridges . The HP Ph otosmart prints a test page, aligns the print head, and calibrates the printer.
Make sure you have the following materials available: • Dry foam rubber sw abs, lint-free cloth, o r any soft material t hat will not come ap art or leave fi bers.

To clea r a paper ja m from the Two-s ided prin ting access ory 1. Turn off the HP Photo smart. 2. Press in the tabs on the left and right side of the Tw o-sided printing accessory.
b . Remove any paper fro m inside the accessory. c . Close the Tw o-sided printing accesso ry cover until it locks into place. 5. Replace th e Two-sided pri nting accessory. Gently p ush the accessory forward until it snaps into place. 6. Turn on the HP Photosmart , and then press OK to continue the curre nt job.
4. Press OK to cont inue the current job. Troubleshoot print cartridges If you are e xperiencing problem s with printi ng, you might have a problem with one of the print cartridge s. Do the followin g: To troubleshoot pri nt cartridges 1. Remove the blac k print cartridge from t he slot on the right.
4. If the problem persists, print a self-test re port to dete rmine if there is a problem wit h the print cartrid ges. This report provide s useful information a bout your print cartridge s , i ncluding status informatio n. 5. If the self-te st report shows a problem, clean the print cartridges.

Solution: You must first inst all the software that came with t he HP Photosmart before connectin g the USB cable. During insta llation, do not plug in th e USB cable until prompted by the onscreen instructions. Once you have instal led the software, connecting your compu ter to the HP Photosma rt with a USB cable is straigh tforward.
Solution: Load paper in the input tray. For more information, see: “ Load pape r” on page 17 Software installati on troubleshooting Use this section to solve any problems you might encounte r while setting up the HP Photosmart software.
Solution: Check that the HP Photosmart is turned on, and t hen try the USB connection ag ain. To retry the USB con nection 1. Unplug t he HP Photosmart power cord, and then plug it in again. 2. Verify that th e USB cable and power cord are plugged in.

1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start , Settings , Control Panel (or just Contro l Panel ). 2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs (or click Uninstall a pr ogram ). 3. Select HP Photosmar t Prin ter Driver Software , and then click Change/Remove . Follow t he onscree n instructions.
Cause: The HP Pho tosmart is turned off. Solution: Turn the HP Photosmart on. Cause: The com puter is turned off. Solution: Turn the compu ter on. Cause: The H P Photosmart is not properl y connected to the com puter. Solution: Check the connection from th e HP Photosmart to your computer.
If the self-test sho ws a defect, try the following: • Clean th e print cartridges automatically. For more information, see “ C lean the print ca rtridges” on page 62 . • If you are m issing lines when you prin t, clean the elect r ical contacts.
Ink is not filling th e text or graphics comple tely Cause: The Pa per Type setting is incorrect. Solution: Change the pap er type setting to match the typ e of paper loaded in the input tr ay. For more information, see: “ Set the paper type fo r printing” on page 29 Cause: The print quality se tting on the HP Photosmart is set too low.
Use TrueType or Op enType fonts to ensure that the HP Photosmart is ab le to print smooth font s. When selecting a font, look for the TrueType o r OpenType icon. The printout has a hor izontal band of distortion near the bottom of the p age Cause: Your photo image has light blue, gray, or brown hues tha t print near the bottom of the page.
Solution: HP recommends th at you use genuine HP print cartridg es. Genuine HP print cartridges are de signed and tested with HP pr inters to help you easily p roduce great results, time after time. NOTE: HP cannot gua rantee the quality or relia bility of non-HP ink.
Cause: A tri-color or photo print ca rtridge was jarred or handled roughly during installation. Solution: Allo w half an hour for the print cartridge to recover. Cause: There might be fib er or dust built up arou nd the ink nozzle area on the print cartridges.
For more informati on on print cartridges, see “ Troubleshoot print cartridges” on page 74 . Printouts seem blurry or fuzzy Cause: The paper type i s not suitable for th e HP Photosmart. Solution: Use HP Premium Pap ers or any other paper type that is approp riate for the HP Photos mart.
Solution: Make su re the paper is loaded correctly. For more information, see: “ Load full-size pap er” on page 18 Cause: More than one type of pape r is loaded in the input tray. Solution: Loa d only one typ e of paper at a time. Cause: The Two-sided prin ting accessory might not be se curely installed.
Cause: The w rong type of envelope is l oaded. Solution: Do not use shi ny or embossed envelopes o r envelopes that have cl asps or windows. Borderles s printing produces unexpecte d res ults Cause: Printin g a borderless image fro m a non-HP software application produces unexpected results.
Solution: If th e HP Photosmart is not properly connecte d to the computer, communication erro rs can occur. Make sure the USB cable is connected to the HP Photosmart an d the computer as shown be low.
Solution: A print job might re main in the queue after it has been cancelled. The cancelled prin t job jams the queue and pre vents the next print jo b from printing. From your computer, open the printer folder and see i f the cancelled job remains in the print queue .
TIP: You can set the HP Photos mart as the defau lt printer to ensure that the printer is auto matically selected when you select Print in the Fil e menu of your different softw are applications. Cause: The computer is not commun icating with the HP Photosmart .
Solution: Turn the HP Phot osmart off and open the prin t cartridge door. Remove any objects that are blocking the pri nt carriage (including any packing material s), and then turn the HP Photosma rt on again. The pages in my document ca me out in the wrong order Cause: The p rint settings are se t to print the fi rst pa ge of your document first.
NOTE: To avoid paper jams, t uck the flaps inside the envelop es. For more information, see: “ Load envelopes” on page 21 Text or graphics are cut off at the edge of the page Cause: The margins are not set correctly i n your software application. Solution: To check you r margin settings 1.
TIP: Some softw are applications allow you to scale the docu ment to fit the paper size currently sel ected. Additionally, you can scale the size of a docu ment from the print Proper ties dial og box. Cause: The p aper is loaded inco rrectly. Solution: If the pape r is misfeeding, it could cause p arts of the document to cut off.
