Step 1: Pr eparing a Location f or the Printer A Top View (with optional multi-bin mailbox and tray 4) B Front View (with optiona l multi-bin mailbox and tray 4) This prin ter requ ires the following:.
Step 2: Unpacking the Printer The following item s are included with the printer : A Toner cartrid ges: black, cyan, ma genta, and yellow B Power cord C Software on CD- ROM D Manuals: getting started .
To unpack the printer 1 Remove all external packin g tape from the printer . 2 Open the lower left door and push down the green lever on the right side of the fuser. Then, rem ove the orange shipping notice from the fuser. 3 Open the upper righ t door and remove the packing tape at the left side of the opening.
5 Remove the packing material from the lower (gree n) lever. 6 Press the wh ite button on the lower (green) lever and swing the lever to the right. 7 Remove the packing cardboard from inside the printe r and then swing the lower (green) lever back to the left, making sure the lever clicks into place.
Note Follow steps 10-13 to attach the five stabilizing legs to the bottom of tray 4. If the five stabilizin g legs (w hich are in addition to the four lock ing wheels) are already attached, proc eed to step 14. 10 Locate the five stabilizing legs that came with the printer.
14 Remove the packing tape from tray 4. 15 Open the media transfe r door and remove the orange packin g spacers. 16 Firmly grip the hand le in the center of tray 4, squeeze the release lever, and pull the tray out until it stops. 17 Remove the two orange packin g clips from inside tray 4 by squeezin g the sides of the clips and pulling them out.
Step 3: Installing the Cables To conne ct the power cord to a printer with a stand Note Make sure that the printer is off (pow er button out) before conn ecting the pow er cord.
To connect the interf ace cable and pow er cords fo r a printer with an optional tray 4 Note Make sure that the printer is off (power button out) befor e attaching the interface cable and connecting the power cord s. 1 Locate the interf ace cable (A), the power pack (B), and the straight power cord (C).
5 Push the two cables extending from the pow er pack into the space between the printer and tray 4 along the back of the printer . 6 Plug the shorter of the two cables into the connec tor on the back left corner of the prin ter. 7 Plug the longer of the two cables into the connec tor on the back left corner of tray 4.
9 Roll the prin ter to its permanen t location, wh ere all fou r wheels rest on a level floor surface, and stabilize it by pushing the lockin g tabs on the tray’s whee ls to the locked position . 10 Rotate the feet of the five stabilizing legs and the anti-tip foot (on the left side of the tray) until they are snug against the floo r.
Step 4: Connecting the Prin ter to the Network If you will conne ct the com puter to the printer with a parallel cable, see “To connect a parallel cable” later in this Step.
To connect to a 10 Base2 netw ork 1 Attach one section of the ThinLA N (coaxial) cable to a BNC “T” connector. 2 Attach ano ther T hinLAN cable section (A) or, if it is at the end of the network, a 50- Ohm terminator (B) to the other side of the BN C “T” connector.
To conne ct a para llel cable To print throu gh the parallel port, the printer requir es a 25- pin male/m icro 36-pin m ale (“C-size”) parallel cable that is IEEE -1284 compliant. The cable is not included with the printe r. It must be purchased separately.
Step 5: Changin g the Printer Contr ol Panel Over lay and Langua ge (Optional) Replace the printer control pan el overlay with the one included for your lang uage, if applicable. The n config ure the prin ter control panel to show printer m essages in your language.
Selecting the Display Language Use the prin ter contr ol panel to set the printer to display printe r messages and print configuration pages in a variety of supp orted languages. To select the printer control panel languag e 1 Hold down [Select] wh ile turning the prin ter on (power button in).
Step 6: Installing the Consuma bles The following parts (consumab les) are inclu ded with the printer: A Imaging Dru m B Black Toner Cartrid ge C Color Toner Cartr idges: yellow, m agenta, and cyan In.
To install the imaging drum Note Make sure that the printer is off (pow er button out) before installing the imag ing drum . 1 Open the front doo r of the printer (A). Swing the upper (blue ) lever to the right (B) . Pre ss the white butto n on the lower (green) lever and swing the lever to the right (C).
To install the black to ner cartridge 1 Remove the black toner cartridg e from its packaging and gently rock the cartridge several times to distribute the toner.
To install the color to ner cartridges 1 Turn the printer on (power button in). 2 Press the blue button bene ath the clear door to turn the color toner carousel to the slot marked with a yellow sticker.
5 Remove the toner cartridg e that matches the color of the sticker in the carousel slot fro m its pack aging and gently rock the cartrid ge several time s to distribute the toner .
9 Close the clear door. Note If the clear door doe s not close, make sure that the blue locking lever is all the way to the left and that the seal has been completely removed from the toner cartridge. 10 Press the blue button to rotate the carousel to the slot marked with a magenta sticker and repeat steps 3 through 9.
Step 7: Load ing the Input T rays The prin ter has the follo wing input trays: A Tray 1 (multipur pose tray) B Tray 2 C Tray 3 D Tray 4 (optional) These inpu t trays con tain media guid es that are preset at the factor y to a default media size, either letter or A4.
Loading media into trays 2 and 3 Note Before loadin g media into trays 2 and 3, verify that the spacers were rem oved fro m both trays when “Step 2: Unp acking the Printer” was perform ed. 1 Firm ly grip the handle in the center of tray 2, squeeze the release lever, and pull the tray out until it stops.
5 Adjust the left media guid e by pushing it in (A) and lifting it up and out (B). 6 Position the guide over the appropriate media size mar ked in the tray. 7 Press the guid e into the rear slot (C), and then lower it down (D) into the front slot (E ).
9 Make sure that the med ia-size tab on the front of the tray is set to the correct med ia size. 10 Slide the tray back into the prin ter. 11 Attach the left outpu t bin (A ) to the left side of the printer if you did not install an option al multi-bin mailbox.
Loading me dia in the optional tray 4 Note Before loading med ia into tray 4, verify that the spacers were rem oved from the tray when “Step 2: Unpackin g the Printer ” was performed . 1 Firmly grip the hand le in the center of the input tray, squeez e the release lever, and pull the tray out until it stops.
5 Load m edia into the tray up to the media-fill mark. For example, up to 2,000 sheets of 20 lb (75 g/m 2 ) bond paper will fit in the tray. For informatio n on loadin g and orienting media, see the onlin e user’s guide or the quick reference guid e.
Step 8: Conf iguring Input T rays Configure the mo de for tray 1 (either First mode or Cassette mode), the type of m edia (such as plain pap er , letterhead , and transpare ncies) for each of the input trays, and the size of the me dia (such as letter , A4 , and legal) to use tray 1 in Cassette mo de.
Conf igurin g Media T ype and Size Configuring the media type is beneficial for se veral reason s: • Configuring the m edia type prev ents printing on the wron g (and possibly m ore expensive) media. • If a user chang es the type of media in an inpu t tray, other users can still print on the correct med ia.
Step 9: Printing a Conf iguration Page Use the printe r contro l panel to print a configuration page and verify that the printer was installed correctly .
To verify com munication with a para llel cable T o verify that the printer and computer are set up corr ectly to commu nicate with each other , prin t a direc tory list. 1 T urn the computer and printer on and wait for the printer to bring itself online (the prin ter is online wh en the Ready light on the printer control panel is lit).
Communicating with an optional HP J etDirect internal print serv er If the printer contains an optio nal HP JetDirect internal print server , and you canno t com municate with the printer over the network , verify the operation of the print server .
Step 10: Understandi ng the Softwar e CD-R OMs are includ ed with this printer . CD-ROM1 contains the prin ter software; CD- R OM 2 contain s the online user’ s guide and the software needed to read the guide— Ad obe TM Acro bat Reader (Ac rord3 2.
• For Micro soft Window s netw ork installation instructions, see “Step 11: Window s Network Installation.” • For IBM LAN server network installation instructions, see “Step 12: IBM L AN Server Netw ork Installation.” • For Macin tosh network installation instructions, see “Step 13: Macintosh Netw ork Installation.
To access the online user ’s guide from the hard disk • Microsoft W indows 95 users click Sta rt , point to Program s , then HP LaserJet , and click the online user’s guid e icon. • Microsoft W indows 3.1 x users locate the HP La serJet grou p and double-click the online user ’s guide icon.
Step 11: Windows Netw ork Installation In Microsoft Windo ws 95 and W indows NT ® 4.0, the installation software detects both the version of Windo ws that is in use and the language that is selected in the operating system. Th e installation software then installs prin ter driv ers and printing software that are appropriate for the system .
Conf igurin g the Printer on the Network Before you can use the printer , configure it on the network. HP recom mends that you use a printer managem ent utility such as the HP JetAdmin software, PCO NSOL E, or NW AD MIN. Con figuring the printer on the network in volves steps such as setting up a print queue or port.
6 When you are prom pted to choo se the me thod of installation, click Disk Copy . 7 Click Browse to assign a path to the drive and directo ry to which you want to copy .
Connecting Network Clients to the Printer After installing the software on a workstation, you must connect workstation to the printer . • Workstations in Window s 95 can be connected to the print server or directly to the printer. • Workstations in Window s NT and W indows 3.
In W indows NT , there are three option s for connec ting to a network printer: • Open Ne twor k Neighb orhood and locate the printer on the network. Drag and drop the printer’s icon from Network Neigh borhood to the Printers folde r. • Open Ne twor k Neighb orhood and doub le-click the prin ter icon.
Step 12: IBM LAN Network Installation Installing the Printer Software f or IBM LA N Server 4. x For IBM LAN Server 4. x networks, install the software on workstations or on the server .
Conf iguring the Printer on the Network Before you can use the printer , you must configure it on the network by using a printer man agement utility such as the HP JetAdm in software. Configuring the printer on the network in volves steps such as setting up a port.
(This assume s that the CD-R OM drive is the D drive and that you are installing the English driver .) For <dri ve r> , type: PCL or PS . 9 Click Refresh . Printer drivers app ear in the window . 10 Select the HP Color LaserJet 8500 driver . 11 Click Install .
Step 13: Macintosh Network Installation Installing the Macintosh Prin ter Software The M acintosh printer driver for this printer supports system version 7.0 or later . For an EtherT alk or LocalT alk network, install the software on each workstation.
Connecting Network Clients to the Printer If you are not using a print spooler or a print queue, follow the directions below to conn ect the prin ter dri vers to the prin ter autom atically . If you are using a print spooler or if the automatic setup is unsuccessful, follow the direc tions below to configure the printer driver manually .
Conf iguring the Printer on the Network Configure the printe r in one of two ways: • Print directly to the printe r through E therT alk. • Print throu gh the netw ork by printing to a print queu e. Set up the print queue using the netwo rk softwar e.
