1 Getting started Use this sect ion to get familia r with the camera contro ls, set up your digi tal camera for use, and begi n taking pictures. Install the battery 1. Open the Battery/M emory Card door by sliding the door latch as indicated on the Battery/ Memory Card door. 2. Insert the bat tery in the larger slot , pushing the battery in until the latch catches. 3. Close the Batte ry/Memory Card door.
Choose the lang uage Use to choose the languag e you want, the n press . To change the l anguage lat er, use the Camera Setup Menu (see “ Using the Camera Setu p Menu” on page 38 ).

2 Taking pictures and recording video clips You can take pictures w hen you are in Picture Cap ture and you can record video when you are in Video Record . Slide to to take pi ctures or to to record video clips. Th e Image Displa y resembles the following: 1 • Picture Capture indicator.
Recording video clips You can record a video cli p when the camera i s set to Vi deo Record . 1. Slide to . 2. Frame the subjec t in the Image Display.
Optimizing focus When the c amera cannot auto f ocus, the focus bracke ts turn red. This indi cates the picture may be out of focus because the sub ject is out of the focus range or the scene has low contrast.
Optimizing exposure When you are taking a pict ure and press the Shutter button halfway do wn, the camera also measures the light leve l to set the proper exposure . If the camera determ ines the scene will require a ve ry long exposure, a shaking hand icon ( ) appears.
For MP values and their recommended print sizes, see Image Q uality under “ Using the Picture Captu re and Video Reco rd menus” on page 17 . To use digital zoom: 1. While in Picture Cap ture , press on the Zoom lever to optic ally zoom to the maximum level, then release the lever.
3 Setting options for taking pictures and recording video clips Your camera's default se ttings work well f or most shooting situat ions. For some situations, how ever, the featur es described in this cha pter can improve t he pictures you take and the video clips yo u record.
To select a shoo ting mode, press Mode while in Picture Capture , use to highl ight a shooting mode, th en press . To exit w ithout changing the sho oting mode, press . Auto Mode (Default)—For taking good shots qui ckly, when you do not have time to select a special shooting mode .

NOTE: Some options are n ot available in certain s hooting modes or with other settings. Using the Self-Timer settings The Self-Timer allows you to take one or two pictures or on e video clip after a 1 0- second delay. 1. While in the Picture Ca pture or Video Record menu, use to highlight Self-Timer , then press .
Adaptive Lighting This setting bala nces the relationshi p between brig ht and dark areas in a picture, preserving gentle contrast s while reducing harsh contrasts. When use d with a flash, Adaptive Lighti ng can brighten areas that a flash wouldn’t reach.
4 Reviewing images and video clips You can review an d manipulate image s and video clips in Playback as described here. For informat ion about enha ncing images, see “ Using the Playba ck Menu” on page 24 an d “ Using the Design Gallery Menu” on pag e 27 .

Defining tags in Window s The HP Photosmart So ftware that came with your came ra includes a feature that allows you to define custom tag s on your computer, then tran sfer the tags to your camera . To define t ags: 1. In the Ta g menu, select Tag Menu Setup.
1. Scroll to one of the images in a panoramic sequ ence, then press . 2. While in the Playback Menu , use to select Stitch Panorama , th en press to view a preview of the stitched im age. You can use to magnify the stitched panorama previ ew, and to pan around the image a nd examine the st itching.
5 Using the Design Gallery Menu You can use the Design Galler y features to enhance yo ur captured image s. 1. While in Playback , use to scroll to an image, then press . 2. Use to h ighlight Design Gallery , then press . 3. Use to highlight an option, then p ress and follow any on-camera inst ructions.
Apply Artistic Effects allows you to create a co py of a selected image and apply creative effects to the copy. To apply artistic ef fects: 1. While in the Design Gall ery Menu , use to select Apply Artis tic Effects , then press . 2. Use to select an option and preview the effe ct it has on the im age.
• R830 seri es: Repeat these steps, if necessary, to correct additional blemishes. • R840 series: You can correct a single ble mish at a ti me. To correct a dditional blemishes, repeat the entire proc edure. • Brightness /Contrast —Allows you to adjust brightness, saturatio n, and contrast.
• Circle —Adds a circular matte border with beveled edges. • Rectangle —Adds a rect angular matte border wi th sharp corners. • Rounded Rectangle —Use s a rectangle with soft corners for t he matte border. • Square —Adds a square matte border wit h beveled edges.
6 Transferring and printing images Regularly transferring im ages to your computer and delet ing them from the memory card will reduce the time it t akes to turn on your camera, to revi ew images, and to tran sfer images. You can tra nsfer pictures and video clips with or withou t the HP Photosmart Software that came with your camera.
3. Connect the came ra and computer usi ng the USB cable that came wi th your camera. 4. Turn on the camera. When the Image Di splay indicates that the ca mera is connected to the computer, follow the instructions on th e computer screen. NOTE: On Macintosh co mputers, if you set the camera to Disk Drive and neither Image Capture n or iPhoto starts aut omatically, look on the desktop for a disk drive labeled with your camera model numbe r and copy the imag es manually. For more information about how to copy files, visit Mac help.

7 Using HP Photosmart Express With HP Photosma rt Express , you can select pictures in yo ur camera to prin t automatically (see “ Marking images for printing” on page 35 ), to buy prints online (.
press . This option is available o nly if you have tagged at least one image (see “ Tagging image s” on page 24 ). • All Images... —Displays the Print Al l Images entry. Press . This option is available onl y if you have more tha n one image in th e camera.
Setting up onli ne destin ations in the camera You can specify up to 34 custom d estinations (such as individual e-ma il addresses or group distribution lists) in the Photosma rt Express Menu . 1. Verify that your computer is con nected to the Int ernet.
8 Using the Camera Setup Menu The Camera Setu p Menu allows you to set preference s for the camera’s behavior. The Camera Setu p Menu is available from the Picture Capture , Video Record , and Playback menus. 1. While in the Picture Ca pture , Video Record , or Playback menu, use to highlight Camera Setup.
9 Troubleshooting Use this section to find inform ation on: • Resetti ng the camera (see “ Reset ting the camera” on page 39 ). • Possible proble ms and solutions (see “ Problems and solutions” on p age 39 ). Resetting the camera If your camera does not re spond when you press but tons, reset the camera.
• Ensure that the me mory card is the proper type (see “ Storag e” on page 53 ). If so, remove the memory card and turn on the ca mera; if the camera tu rns on, turn off the camera, install the memory card, turn on the camera, and fo rmat the memory card (see “ Install and format an op tional m emory card” on page 8 ).
• The memory card or internal memory may be full. Transfer i mages from the camera to your computer, then format t he internal memory or the m emory card (see “ Install and format an opt ional memory card” on page 8 ). Or repl ace the card with a new one.
My image is grainy. • Add indirect li ghting, use the f l ash (see “ Setting the flash” on page 15 ), or wait for natural lighti ng conditions to improve. •U s e a l o w e r ISO Speed setting (see ISO Sp eed under “ Using th e Picture Capture and Video Reco rd menus” on pag e 17 .
The Power li ght is on bu t the Image D isplay is off, or the camera seems stuck and won’t operate. •S l i d e to a different p osition or press any camera butt on to reactivate the Image Di splay. • Reset the camera (see “ Reset ting the camera” on page 39 ).
I cannot transfer i mages from the camera to my computer. • Either inst all the HP Phot osmart Software (see “ Inst all the software” on pa ge 8 ), or see “ Transferring images w ithout HP Photosmart Software” on page 32 .

A Managing b atteries Your camera uses a rechargeable HP Photosmart R07 Lithium Ion battery (L1812A/L1812B). Top points a bout batte ries Always insert the battery in the camera cor rectly (see “ Install the battery” on page 6 ). If the battery is inserted improperly, the compartment door may close but the camera will not operate.
• Do not disassemble or modify the battery. • Immediately discontinue use of the battery if, while using, charging, o r storing the battery, the battery emits an unusual smell, feels excessively h ot (note that it is normal for the battery to feel warm), changes color or shape, or appears abnormal in an y other way.
The following table shows the average recharge time for a fully discharged battery, based on recharge location.
