4 Removal and replacement procedures Preliminary replacement requirements Tools required You will need the following tools to comple te the removal and re placement procedures: ● Flat-bla ded screw .
Cables and connectors CAUTION: When servicing the computer, be sure that c ables are placed in their prop er locations during the reassembly p rocess. Improp er cable placem ent can damage th e computer. Cables must be handle d with extreme care to avo id damage.
Grounding guidelines Electrostatic discharge damage Electronic componen ts are sensit ive to electrost atic discharge (ESD). Circuitry design and st ructure determine the deg ree of sensitiv ity.
Packaging and transporting guidelines Follow these groun ding guidelines whe n packaging and transp orting equipment: ● To avoid hand contact, transport products in static-safe tubes, bags, or boxes. ● Protect ESD-sensitive parts an d assemblies wi th conductive or approv ed containe rs or packaging.
Equipment guidelines Grounding equi pment must include eith er a wrist strap o r a foot strap at a grou nded workstation. ● When seated, wear a wrist strap connected to a grounded system. Wrist straps are flexibl e straps with a minimu m of one megohm ±1 0% resi stance in the ground cords.
Component replacement procedures This chapter provides removal an d replacement proced ures. There are as many as 95 screws and screw locks, in 15 different sizes, that must be removed, replaced, or loosened when servicing the computer . Make special note of each screw and screw lock size and location du ring removal and repl acement.

4. Remove the optical drive (3) from the computer. 5. If it is necessary to replace the optical drive bracket, position the optica l drive with the rear toward y ou. 6. Remove the two Phillips PM2.0×3.0 screws (1) th at secure the optical drive bracket to th e optical drive.

4. Remove the ha rd drive (3) from the hard drive bay. 5. If it is necessary to re place the hard drive bracket, re move the tape (1) that secures the Mylar cover down onto the bracket, and then lift to open the Myla r cover (2) . 6. Remove the two Phillips PM3.
Memory modules NOTE: Primary and expansion memory is insta lled in a stacke d configuration in the bo ttom of the computer. Description Spare part num ber 1-GB (PC3-10600, 13 33-MHz, DDR3) 639736-001 .
3. Remove the memory module (2) by pul ling the module a way from the slot at an angle. NOTE: Memory modules a re designed with a n otch (3) to prevent incorrect insertion into the memory module slot. NOTE: The computer uses tw o memory sockets . The top socket hou ses the expans ion memory module and is show n in the following image.

4. Remove the WWAN module (3) by pulling the module away from the slo t at an angle. NOTE: WWAN modules are designed with a notch (4) to prevent incorrect inse rtion.

3. Disconnect th e power from the c omputer by first unplugging the power cord from the AC ou tlet, and then unpl ugging the AC adap ter from the comput er. 4. Remove the batt ery (see Battery on page 47 ). 5. Remove the bottom door (see Bottom door on pa ge 49 ).
4. Remove the WLAN module (3) by pulling the module away from the slot at an angle. NOTE: WLAN module s are designed with a no tch (4) to prevent incorrect insertion.

4. Insert a screwdriver or similar tool into the gap near the WWAN module comp artment and push to disengage the keyboard. 5. Position the compute r uprigh t with the fron t toward you. 6. Open the compute r as far as possible. 7. Lift and rotate the keyboa rd (1) until it rests on the palm rest (2) .
10. Remove the keyboard (3) . Reverse this procedure to insta ll the keyboard. Top cover Description Spare part num ber Top cover for use in mo del 4530s: With a fingerprint reader and USB 3.0 646251-001 Without a fingerprint reader and w ith USB 3.0 646253-001 With a fingerprint reader and USB 2.
3. Disconnect th e power from the c omputer by first unplugging the power cord from the AC ou tlet, and then unpl ugging the AC adap ter from the comput er. 4. Remove the batt ery (see Battery on page 47 ). 5. Remove the following compo nents: a. Bottom door (see Bottom do or on page 49 ).

7. Position the compute r on its side with the display open. 8. Insert a screwdriver through th e holes in the b a ttery bay and pre ss to disengage the top cover from the c omputer.
10. To remove the top cover, pull up on the top of the top cover (1) , pull upward on the left (2) and right sides (3) , and then lift the bott om of the top cover (4) to remove it enough to access the card reader ca ble undernea th. 11. Lift the front of the top co ver slightly to gain access to the cable and connector underneath.

5. Rotate the Tou chpad button bo ard upward (4) , and then remove it (5) . Reverse this procedure to insta ll the card reader. Speaker assembly Description Spare part num ber Speaker assembly for use.

4. Lift the side of th e board (3) , slide it out from u nder the tab, and then remove the board from the top cove r (4) . Reverse this procedure to in stall the Qu ick Launch board.
NOTE: Model 4530s shown belo w. Power button boa rd a ppearance differs in mo del 4730s. 1. Position the top cove r upside-down with the front toward you. 2. Remove the Phillips PM2.0×4.0 screw (1) that secures the board to the top cover. 3. Lift the boar d up at an angle (2) , and then remove it from the top cover (3) .
Modem module NOTE: The modem module spare part kit does not includ e a modem module cable. The mo dem module cable is in cluded in the Ca ble Kit, spare part numbe r 646303-001 for 4 530s models, 646304-001 for 47 30s models. See Cable Kit on page 30 for more Cable Kit spare part number information.
4. Disconnect th e modem module cable (3) from the modem module. Reverse this procedure to in stall the modem module. Component replacement procedures 77.

RJ-11 jack cable NOTE: The RJ-11 jack cable is include d in the Cable Kit, spare part number 646303-001 for 4530s models, 64630 4-001 for 4730s models.
4. Remove the RJ-11 jack fr om the clip built in to the base enclos ure (3) . Reverse this procedure to in stall the RJ-11 jack cabl e. System board NOTE: All system board spare part kits include replacement thermal material. Description Spare part num ber For use in 4530s models with UMA graphics with WWAN and USB 3.
4. Remove the batt ery (see Battery on page 47 ). 5. Remove the following compo nents: a. Bottom door (see Bottom do or on page 49 ). b. Hard driv e (see Hard drive on page 52 ) c. Optical drive (see Optical drive on page 50 ) d. Modem module (see Modem module on page 76 ) e.
2. Disconnect th e webcam cable (1) and the display cable (2) from the system board, and remove the cables from th e routing clip (3) . 3. If removing the system board from model 4730s, sk ip to step 6. If removing the system board from mode l 4530s, remove the two Phillips PM 2.
6. If removing the system boa rd from model 4730 s, remove the three To rx T8M2.0×5.0 screws (1) that secure the system board to the comp uter, and the two Torx T8M2.0× 5.0 screws (2) that secure the hard drive exte nsion board to the computer. 7. Lift the optical drive conn ector latch (3) , and then disconnect the optica l drive cable (4) .
Hard drive extension board (4730s models) Description Spare part num ber Hard drive extension board 64629 1-001 Before removing the hard drive ex te nsion bo ard, follow these steps: 1.
2. Pull the hard drive extension board straight off the system bo ard. Reverse this procedure to in sta ll the ha rd drive extension boa rd. 90 Chapter 4 Remova l and replacement procedures.
RTC battery Description Spare part num ber RTC battery 449137-001 Before r emoving th e RTC bat tery, foll ow these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
3. Lift the battery from the system board (2 ) . Reverse this procedure to in stall the RTC battery. 92 Chapter 4 Remova l and replacement procedures.
Fan Description Spare part num ber Fan 646285-001 Before removing the fan, follow these step s: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
4. Remove the fan fro m the system board (3) . Reverse this procedure to insta ll the fan. NOTE: To prop erly ventilate the comput er, allow at le ast a 7.6-cm (3-in) clea rance on the l eft side of the computer. The computer uses an electric fan for ventilation .
Heat sink All heat sink spare part kits in clude replace ment thermal material. Description Spare part num ber Heat sink for use in comput ers with UMA graphics 646283-001 Heat sink for use in computer s with discrete gr aphics 646284-001 Before removing the heat si nk, follow the se steps: 1.
3. Remove the heat sink from the system board (7) . 4. To remove the UMA h eat sink, in the ord er indicated, loosen the four captive Phill ips screws (1) — (4) that secure the heat sink to the system board. 5. Remove the heat sink from the system board (5) .
NOTE: For UMA models, thoroughly clean thermal mate rial from the surface of the system board (1) and heat sink (2) each time you remove the heat si nk. All heat sink and pro cessor spare part ki ts include thermal material. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the heat sink.
