1 Connect the printer port Buttons and lights Use the printe r buttons to turn the print er on and off, cancel a print job, and restart a job. The printer light s give you visual cues about the status of the printer.
Power button a nd ligh t Use the Power button to turn the p rinter on and off. It can take a few secon ds for the printer to tur n on after you pre ss the Power button. 1 Power button and light The Power light flashes w hen the printer is processing. CAUTION: Always use the Power button to turn the printer on and off.
Resume butto n and light The Resume light fl ashes when an action is required, such as loading paper or cleari ng a paper jam. When t he problem is solved, press the Resume button to continue pri nting. 1 Resume button and light Print Cartridge Status lights The Print Cartridge Stat us lights are located on the cont rol panel.
1 Tri-color print cartridge light 2 Black print cartridge light 1. The left status ligh t represents the tri-color print cartridge, wh ich is installed in the left side of the print ca rtridge carriage. • The light is on a nd solid when the tri-color pr int cartridge is low on ink.
2. Pull out the tr ay extension. 3. If you are printing in the Fa st Draft mode, fold out the t ray extension stop. Use the p aper tray Print on different sizes of media by sliding the pape r guide to the right or to the left. The printer deposits pri nted pages on the top of the p aper tray.
Fold the pa per tray To fold the paper tray 1. Remove pap er or other me dia from th e paper tray . 2. If the tray extensio n stop is folded out, fold it back in.
Print cartridges Two print cartridges can b e used with the printer. 1 Black print cartridge 2 Tri-color pr int ca rtridge NOTE: Your printer might be packaged with only a t ri-color print cartridge. For better results, install a b lack print cartridge in addition to the tri-color print cartridge .
To remove plastic tape from a print car tridge ▲ Hold the print cartridge so that the copper st rips are on the bottom an d facing toward the printe r, and then carefull y remove the pl astic tape . 1 Remove plas tic tape CAUTION: Do not touch the prin t cartridge ink nozzles or copper cont acts.
4 Connect the printer • USB USB The printer connects t o the computer with a universal seri al bus (USB) cable. NOTE: For best printi ng performance, use a USB 2.0 com patible cable. For instructions abou t connecting the printer with a U SB cable, see the Start He re guide that came with the printer.
5 Print photos The printer softw are offers several features that make p rinting digital photos ea sier and improve phot o quality. Learn how to print ph otos Print borderless photos . 3. Place the photo pa per in the right side of the tray . The side to be printed on should face down and the sho rt edge should point towards the pri nter. 4. Push the pa per into the printer until it stop s. 5. Slide the paper guide firmly against the edge of th e paper.

4. In the Printing Shor tcuts list, click Photo Printing -with white borders , and then select the following optio ns: • Print Quality : Normal or Be st NOTE: For maximum dpi quality, go to the Advanced tab, an d then select Enabled from the Maximum dp i drop-down list.

HP Everyday Photo Paper is designed to create qual ity photos with less in k. NOTE: For higher-quality ph otos, use HP Advanced Photo Paper a nd set the print resolution to Best or Maximum d pi . For more information on enabling the ma ximum dpi mode, se e Maximum dpi .

7 Printing tips Learn how to use pri nting shortcuts, select a paper typ e, change the print resolut ion, set the page order, print mul tiple pages on a single sheet, preview a document, a nd use two- sided printing. Click any of the following links: Check your printer • Connect the printer .

To delete a printi ng shortcut 1. Open the Printer Properties di alog box . 2. Click the Printing Shortcuts tab. 3. In the Printing Shortcuts list, click th e printing shortc ut that you want to delete. 4. Click Delete . The printin g shortcut is removed from the list.
Print multiple pages on a single sheet of paper You can print up to 16 pag es on a single sheet of paper. 12 4 3 To print multiple pages on a si ngle sheet of paper 1.
4. In the Print In Graysca le drop -down list, se lect from the follow ing options: • High Quality : uses all the available colors to print your photo in grayscale. This creates smooth a nd natural shades of gray. • Black Ink On ly : uses black ink to print your ph oto in grayscale.
To preview a printed do cument 1. Open the Printer Properties dialog bo x . 2. Click the Features or the Color tab. 3. Select the Show prev iew before printing check box. 4. Select any other print set tings that you want, and the n click OK . Before the document prints, a preview is displaye d.
Change the print speed or quality The HP Deskjet au tomatically chooses a print qua lity and speed setting depe nding on the paper type se tting you select. You can also cha nge the print quality sett ing to customize the sp eed and qu ality of the p rint process.
Printing in maximum dp i takes longer than printing wit h other settings and requires a la rge amount of di sk space. To print in Maxi mum dpi mode 1. Open the Printer Properties dialog bo x . 2. Click the Advanced tab. 3. In the Printer Feature s area, select Enabled from the Maximum dpi drop-down list.
To print a two- sided document with a tablet binding 1. Open the Printer Properties di alog box . 2. Click the Features tab. 3. In the Two-sided printi ng drop-down list, click Manual . 4. Select the foll ow ing check boxes: • Flip Pages Up • Preserve Layo ut 5.
To print a W eb page 1. Make sure you have pa per loaded in the input tray . 2. On the File menu in your Web browser, click Print . TIP: For best results, select HP Smart Web Printing on the File menu. A check mark appears when it is se lected. The Print dialog box appea rs.
8 Printer software Most print sett ings are automatically handle d by the software appli cation. You need to change the setti ngs manuall y only when you ch ange print quality, print on specific types of paper or tra nsparency film, or use specia l features.
To change the defa ult print settings 1. Double-click t he HP Digital Imaging Mon itor icon on the right side of t he Windows taskbar. 1 HP Digital Imaging Monitor icon The HP Soluti on Center is displayed. 2. In the HP Solution Center, click Settings , point to Print Settings , and th en click Printer Settings .
What's This? help Use What's Thi s? help to learn more about the available print ing options. To use What's Thi s? help 1. Move the cursor over the feat ure that you want to learn m ore about. 2. Click the right mouse button. The What's This box is displayed.
9 Maintenance The HP Deskjet requires litt le maintenance. Y ou will need t o replace, align, or clean your print cartridges from t ime to time. This section provides instru ctions for keeping the HP Deskjet in t op working condition. Perf orm these simple mainte nance procedures as necessary.
• Printer documentat ion: For a list of pr int cartridge se lection numbers , see the reference guide that came with the printer. • Print Cartridge Information dialog box: For a list o f print cartridge selectio n numbers, open the printer Toolbox , click the Estimated Ink Levels tab, and then click the Print Cartridge Information bu tton.
5. Remove the repla cement print cartri dge from its packagin g and carefully remo ve the plastic tape. Hold t he print cartridge so that the copper strip is on the bottom and facing tow ard the printe r. 1 Remove plastic tape CAUTION: Do not touch the print cartridge in k nozzles or copper contacts.

NOTE: Ink from the cartri dges is used in the printing process in a number of different ways, including i n the initialization process, which prepares t he device and cartridges for printing, and in printhead servicing, wh ich keeps print nozzles cle ar and ink flowing smoothly.
Manually clean print cartridges CAUTION: Do not clean the prin t cartridge contacts unless you are having a problem with print qualit y and other measures have not been successful .
3. Repeat this proce ss until no ink residue or dust appears on the swab. 4. Insert the print cartridges in th e HP Deskjet, and then close the cover. For more information, see Replace print cartridges . Maintain print cartridges Follow these g uidelines to maintain a nd store HP print cartridges and to en sure consistent print qual ity.
10 Shop for ink supplies To find the print cartridg e reorder number, see the printed docume ntation that came with the HP Deskjet . You can also use the software that came wi th the HP Deskjet to fin d out the reorder number for the prin t cartridge.

Print cartridge p roblem message The printer cannot print if the print cartridges are faulty, or if th ey are not installed properly. If you receive a message stating there is a prob lem with a print cartridge, follow the instructions in Resolving print cartridge error m essages to resolve the problem.
Original HP ink de pleted Solution: Follow the prom pts on the computer screen to contin ue or replace the indicated print cartrid ges. For more informati on, see Replace print cart ridges . Ink levels might not be available for t he indicated print cartridges.
removed from each print cart ridge. When plastic tape covers the print cartridge contacts, the pr inter cannot detect that th e print cartridge is inst alled.
NOTE: Do not set the pa per size from the Pri n ters folder or from the prin ter icon located in the lo wer-right hand cor ner of the screen next to the clock, because this will affect all ap plications. Only set the pa per size in Microsoft Word. To set the paper size in Microso ft Word 1.
Installation progr am stops Cause: If the installation progra m stops when it looks for new hardware, one of the following issues is causing a communication problem: • The USB cable is old or defecti ve. • Software, such as an antivirus program, is run ning.
To resolve the pr oblem 1. Disconnect the USB ca ble from the printer. 2. Disconnect the power cord f rom the printer. 3. Wait approximat ely 30 seconds. 4. Reconnect the power cord t o the printer. 5. Reconnect the USB cable to the printer. 6. If the “Unknow n Device” message is still displayed, replace the USB cable.
Printer lights are on or flashing The printe r lights in dicate th e printer sta tus. 1 Power light 2 Resume light 3 Print Cartridge Status lights To resolve the problem t hat is causing the lights to flash , click the appropriate link.
Power light is flashi ng 1 Power light If the Power light is flashi ng, the printer is preparing to print. The ligh t stops flashing when the printer has received all data. Resume l ight is flashing 1 Resume l ight If the Resume li ght is flashing, check the f ollowing conditions: • The printer might be out of paper.
Both Power and R esume light s are flashi ng The printer might need to be restarted. 1. Press the Power button to turn off th e printer, and then press the Power button to restart the pri nter. Proceed to step 2 if the l ights continue to flash. 2. Press the Power button to turn off the printer.
If one or both Print Cartridge Stat us lights are on and flashing • The light on the left bl inks when the tri-color print cartridge (on the left ) is the problem, the light on the right blinks when the bl ack cartridge (on the right ) is the problem.

Solution 3: Clear the print queue Solution: Restart your computer to clear the print queue. To clear the print qu eue 1. Restart your computer. 2. After the comput er has restarted, check the p rint queue.
After reconnecti ng the USB cable, the product should start printing the jobs in queue. NOTE: If you are connecting the pro duct through a USB hub, make sure t he hub is turned on. If th e hub is on, try connecting direct ly to your computer. 5. If the produ ct does not start printing automati cally, start another print job .
6. Check the driver listed in the Driver drop-down menu to ve rify that the product is using the c orrect driver. The name of your prod uct should be listed as the d river. 7. If the wrong drive r is selected, select the correct driver fro m the Driver drop-down menu.
Solution 7: Clear the p rint queue manually Solution: Manual ly clear the print queue. To clear the print q ueue manually 1. Depending upon your operating system, do one of the following: • Windows Vista: On the Windows taskbar, click Start , click Control Panel , and then click Printers .
Solution 9: Veri fy whether the software application is causing the problem Solution: Verify whether the soft ware application is the problem. To verify the softwar e application 1. Close the soft ware application and re open it. 2. Try to print agai n from the software a pplication.
To increase printe r speed, close all unnecessary softwa re programs when printing. Complex documents, graphics, or photos are prin ting Documents containi ng graphics or photos print more sl owly than text docume nts.
NOTE: In the procedures belo w, the "problem" cartri dge is identified by the blinking light. The light on the left bl inks when the tri-color print ca rtridge (on the left) is the problem and the light on t he right blinks when the black cartrid ge (on the right) is the problem.
8. Check to see if the e rror has been resolved. • If the error has b een resolved, then there is a proble m with the black print cartridge. • If the error has not be en resolved, then there is a prob lem with both print cartridges. 9. When you have iden tified the problem cartridg e, continue with the following solutions.
5. Read the selection num ber on the print cartridge label and make sure i t is compatible wi th your printer. Compatible print cartridges are listed in the ref erence guide that ca me with your printer. 1 Selection number 6. If the print cartridge has the wrong selection n umber, install a new prin t cartridge.
Try the following solu tions: • Solution 1 : Turn th e power off and on • Solution 2 : Clear any pa per jams • Solution 3: Move the printer carriage • Solution 4 : Verify th e power source • Solution 5: Remove and reinstall the print cartridges Solution 1: Turn the power off an d on Solution: Turn the pow er off and then back on.
Solution 3: Move the pr inter carriage Solution: If the printer carriage i s still stuck, try moving it as described in t he following pro cedure. To move the printe r carriage 1. Press the Power button to turn off the printer, and th en disconnect the power co rd from the pr inter.
Solution 4: Verify th e power source Solution: Verify that the printer is properly connected to a suitable power source. To verify the powe r source 1. Verify that the compu ter and the printer have the co rrect power plugs depending on your country/region.
5. Remove the rear ac cess door. Press the handle to the ri ght, and then pull o ut the door. 6. Remove the paper jam from the back of the printer, and then replace the rear access door securely.
Out of paper Try the following solu tions: • Solution 1: Make sure the paper tray is n ot empty • Solution 2 : Check the rear door of the pri nter • Solution 3: Ch eck the paper • Solution 4: .
5. Replace any paper tha t is ripped, dusty, wrinkl ed, or bent. If the paper is cu rled, uncurl the paper by gently b ending it in the opposite direction of the curl or replace t he paper. NOTE: Use plain paper in the product until the issue is resol ved.
Paper type Suggested paper size setting s Greeting-card papers Letter or A4 Index cards Appropriate listed card size (if listed sizes are not appropriate, you can specify a custom paper size) Inkjet p.
Make sure you have the f ollowing materials availa ble: • Lint-free clot h, or any soft material that wi ll not come apart or leave fib ers. • Distill ed, filte red, or bot tled water. To clean the roll ers 1. Turn off the pr oduct and remove the power cord.
Paper weig ht The printer might print on multiple sheets of paper at on ce if the paper is under the recommended pape r weight. Use paper that is within the recommend ed specifications.
Problems with borderless documents If you are having problems with printing borderless documents and phot os, observe the guidelines and check t he solutions in the f ollowing topics: • Borderless p.
Fading occurs on the edges of a photo Verify that the photo paper is not curled. If the photo paper is curl ed, place the paper in a plastic bag and g ently bend it in the opposite dire ction of the curl until the paper lies flat. If the prob lem persists, then use photo pa per that is not curled.
Print quality is poor This section contai ns the following topics: • Wrong, inaccura te, or bleeding co lors • Ink is not fillin g the text or graphics com pletely • The printout has a h orizont.

If you are satisfied with the print quality, contin ue printing in ink-backup mode . Or, replace the missing print cartridge. For more information, see: • Ink-backup mode • Replace pri nt cartridges Cause: A print cartrid ge was missing, and the product wa s printing in ink-backup mode.
Ink is not filling the tex t or graphics completely Try the following so lutions to resolve the issue. Solut ions are listed in order, with the most likely solution f irst. If the first solution d oes not solve the problem, continue trying the remaining soluti ons until the issue is resolved.

The printou t has a hor izontal ba nd of dis tortion n ear the bo ttom of a borderl ess print Try the following solut ions if your borderless print has a blurry band or line on t he bottom of it. NOTE: For this issue, there is no t a problem with your ink supplies.
Printouts have horizonta l streaks or lines Try the following sol utions to resolve the issue. Sol utions are listed in order, with the most likely solution first. If the first solution does not sol ve the problem, continue trying the remaining solut ions until the issue is resolve d.
Cause: The print cartridge nozzle s needed to be cleane d. If this did not so lve the issue, try th e next soluti on. Solution 5: Check the p rint catridge s Solution: Print a self-te st report to determine if the re is a problem with the print cartridges.
Printouts are fa ded or have dull colors Try the following sol utions to resolve the issue. Sol utions are listed in order, with the most likely solution first. If the first solution does not sol ve the problem, continue trying the remaining solut ions until the issue is resolve d.
NOTE: Ink level warnings and indicato rs provide estimates for planning purposes only. When you receive a low-ink warning message, consider having a replacement cartrid ge available to avoid possible printin g delays. You do not need to replace the print cartridges until pr int quality becomes unacceptab le.

If this did not solve the issue , try the next solution. Solution 2: Use a higher quality image Solution: Use a higher reso lution image.
Printouts are slanted o r skewed Try the followi ng solutions if your printout do es not appear straight on the page. • Solution 1: Make sure th e paper is loaded correctly • Solution 2: Make su r.
Cause: Ink accumula ted inside the product, where the back of the paper rests during printing. If this did not solve the issue , try the next solution. Solution 2: Wait while the ink dries Solution: Wait at least th irty minute s for the in k inside the product t o dry, then try the print job again.
If this did not so lve the issue, try th e next soluti on. Solution 3: Clean the rol lers Solution: Clean t he rollers. Make sure you have the following materials ava ilable: • A lint-free cloth, o r any soft material that will not com e apart or leave fibers.
The text edg es are jagged Try the following sol utions to resolve the issue. Sol utions are listed in order, with the most likely solution first. If the first solution does not sol ve the problem, continue trying the remaining solut ions until the issue is resolve d.
Text and images a re misaligned Solution: If t he text and images on your printout s are misaligned, then align th e print cartridges. For more information, see Align print cartridges . Document is prin ted off-center or at an angle Solution: 1. Verify that the pa per is correctly placed in the in put tray.
