Load the input tray NOTE: Whe n you add ne w paper, m ake sure tha t you remove all of the paper from th e inpu t tray and straighten the sta ck. Do not fan the pape r. This re duces jams by preven ting multi ple sheets of paper f rom feeding through the p roduct at o ne time.

Tray ad justment fo r small pape r sizes To print on paper sho rter than 185 mm (7.3 in), u se the short-paper extender to modify the input tray. 1. Remove the short-paper extender tool from the storage slot on the right sid e of the input a rea. 2. Attach the tool to the pa per length guide on the input tray.
4. Push the paper into the p roduct until it stops, and then push the paper length guide in so the extender tool supports th e paper. 5. When finish ed printin g on short pa per, remov e the short-paper extender tool from the input tray, and then pl ace it in the storage slot.

3. Click or tap the Layout tab. 4. Select th e appropria te duplex opti on from the Print on Both Sid es Manually drop-dow n list, and then click or tap the OK button. 5. In the Print dialog box, click or tap the OK bu tton to print the job. The product will print the first side of all th e pages in the document first.
6. Retrieve the printed stac k from the outpu t bin, and place it with the printed-side facing down, top edge first in the input tray. 7. At t he co mpute r, cl ick or ta p the OK button to print the second side of the job. 8. If promp ted, touch or p ress the a ppropriate control pa nel button to continue.
Print multiple pa ges per sh eet (Windows) 1. From the software program, select the Prin t option. 2. Select the product from th e list of printers, and then click or tap the Proper ties or Preferences button to open the print driver. NOTE: Th e name of the button varies for different software programs.
5. Select th e correct num ber of pages per sh eet from t he Pages per sheet drop -down list, and then click or tap the Advanced button. 6. Select th e correct Page s per Sheet Layout option from the drop-down list.

Configure the product How you con figure the pr oduct varies d ependi ng on whether you set it up for stand alone fax, with an answeri ng machine , or with a n extension ph one. NOTE: Con figuring the fax time, date, and header se ttings is required to use the fax feature.
4. Select the 12-hour clock or 2 4-hour clock. 5. Use the keypa d to enter the curr ent time, and then touch the OK button. 6. Select th e date f ormat. 7. Use the keypa d to enter the cu rr ent date, and then touch the OK button. 8. Select Fax Hea der .

Configure for an answer ing machine If you co nnect a te lephone answ ering machine to the pr oduct, you n eed to config ure the Rings to Answer and Answer Mo de settings for the product. Follow th es e st eps to c onfig ure t he prod uct: LCD control panel 1.
4. Make sure that the On option is selected. With this setting turned on, you can alert the product to pic k up the in comin g fax call by pres sing 1- 2-3 sequen tially on the telephone ke ypad. Turn this setting off only if you use pulse dialing o r if you have a service from your tel ephone com pany that als o uses the 1-2-3 seque nce.

3. Use the keypad to enter the fax number. NOTE: To use access codes, credit cards, or calling cards, you must dial the fax number manually to allow f or pauses an d dia ling code s. Change the produc t conn ection type (Windows) If you ar e already usin g the product a nd you wish to change the way it is connected, use the Reconfigure your HP Devi ce shortcut on your computer d esktop to cha nge the connec tion.
Use HP Web Service s applications (touchscre en models only) Several innovativ e app lications are av ailable for thi s product that you ca n downloa d direct ly f rom the Internet. For more information and to download t hese applic ations g o to the HP Connected Web site at www.
HP Device Toolbox (Windows) Use the HP De vice Toolbox for Windows to check product status or to view or change product se ttings from your compu ter. This tool opens the HP Embed ded Web Server for the product. NOTE: Th is tool is availab le only if you p erformed a full in stallation when you installed the product.

HP Utility for Mac O S X Use the HP Utility for Ma c OS X to view or ch ange produc t settings f rom your com puter. You ca n use th e HP U tilit y when the pr oduct i s con necte d with a USB cable or is c onnecte d to a TCP /IP-b ased network.

4. Enter the new password in the New Passwor d box and in the Verify Password box. 5. At the bottom of the window, click the Apply button to save the pa ssword. Lock the pr oduct 1. You can attach a security cable to the slot on the back of th e produ ct.
Econ omy set tings ● Print with E conoMode ● Configure the Sleep/Auto Off After setting Print with EconoMode This product h as an EconoMode option for printing dr afts of d ocuments. Using E conoMode can use less tone r. However, using EconoMode can also reduce print quality.
Touchscreen control panel 1. From the Ho me screen on the produc t control pane l, touch th e Setup button. 2. Open the followi ng menus : ● System Setup ● Energy Settings ● Sleep/Auto Off After 3. Select the time for the Sleep/Auto Off delay. NOTE: The default valu e is 15 Min utes .

Rep lace the to ner ca rtri dge When a toner cartr idge a pproac hes th e end o f usef ul lif e, you a re pro mpted to o rder a repl acement . You can continue pr inting w ith the current cartridge u ntil redist ributing the tone r no longer yields ac ceptable pr int quality.
4. Remov e the new tone r cartridge f rom the bag . Place the us ed t oner ca rtri dge in the bag f or recyclin g. 5. Grasp both sides of the toner cartridge an d distribute the toner by gently roc king the cartr idge . CAUTION: Do not touch the sh utter or the surface of the roller.
7. Align the toner ca rtridge with the tracks inside the product, and then in sert the toner cartrid ge until it is firmly seate d. 8. Close the top cover.

Control panel help system (touchscreen mode ls only) The produc t has a buil t-in Help system tha t explai ns how to use e ach screen . To open the Help sy stem, touch the Help butt on in the upper -righ t corne r of the scre en. For some screens, the He lp opens to a global menu w here you can se arch for specifi c topics.
Restore the fact ory-set defaults Restoring the factory-set defaul ts returns all of the product and n etwork settings to the factory defaults. It will no t reset the pag e count, tray size, or la nguage . To restore the produc t to the factory-default settings, follo w these step s.
Solve paper feed or jam problems If the p roduct has recur ring proble ms with pape r feeding or with jams , use the following informatio n to reduc e the numbe r of occurre nces. The product does not pick up paper If the product does not pick up paper from the tray, try these solutions.
a. From the Home sc reen on the prod uct co ntro l pane l, to uch th e Setup b utton. b. Touc h the Service menu. c. Touc h the Cleaning Page button. d. Load pla in letter or A 4 paper whe n you are prompted. e. Touc h the OK button to begin the cleaning process.

3. By default, the print driver d isplays th e Copies & Pages menu. Open the menus drop-down list, and then click the Fini shing menu. 4. Select a type f rom the Media-type drop-down list.

Clean the pickup ro llers and separa tion pad in the document feeder If the docu ment feed er experien ces paper -handli ng problems , such as ja ms or multiple-p age feeds , clean the documen t-feeder roll ers and separ ation pad. 1. Lift the d ocu ment -feed er input tray.
Improve fax im age quality ● Check the scanne r glass for dirt or smudges ● Check the send-fax resolution s etting ● Check the lightness/ darkness setting ● Chec k th e Error Corr ecti on se t.
3. Select Advanced Setu p , and th en select Fax R esolution . 4. Select the d esired reso lutio n setting, and then touch OK . Check the li ghtness/darkness s etting If the fax outpu t is too light or too dark, check the ligh tness/darkn ess setting to make sure it is a ppropriate for t he fa x job .
Check the Fit-t o-Page setting If the product printed a fax job off the page, turn on the fi t-to-page feature from the product control panel. NOTE: Make sure that the default paper size settin g matche s the size of the paper in the tray. LCD control panel 1.
2. Use a moist, lint-free cloth to wipe both pickup rollers and the separation pad to remove dirt. CAUTION: Do no t use abras ives, acetone , benz ene, ammo nia, ethyl alcoho l, or carbon tetrachloride on any part of the product; these can damage the product.
Solve wired net work problems Check the fol lowing items to verify that the product is communicating wi th the network . Before be ginning, print a co nfiguration p age from th e product c ontrol panel a nd locate the p roduct IP a ddress tha t is listed on this page.
a. Open a comma nd-line pr ompt on your computer. For Windows, click St art , click Run , type cmd , and then press Ente r . b. Type ping followed b y the IP address for your product. For Mac OS X, open the Network Util ity, and then su pply the IP addres s in the correc t field in th e Ping pan e.
Solve wireless network problems ● Wireless con nectivity checklis t ● The product does not print after th e wirele ss config uratio n complet es ● The produ ct does not print, a nd the compute r.
The product d oes not pr int after th e wireless configuration completes 1. Make sure that the product is turned on and in the ready state. 2. Turn off a ny third-pa rty firewa lls on your comp uter. 3. Make sure that the wireless network is working correctly.
The wireless network is not functioning 1. Make sure tha t the network ca ble is not con nected. 2. To verify if the network has lost communicati on , try conn ecting other devices to the network. 3. Test networ k communication b y pinging the ne twork.
● Keep the wire less dev ices away fr om large metal objects , such as filing cabi nets, and o ther electromagnetic dev ices, such as microw aves and cordless telephon es. These objects can disrupt radio signals . ● Keep the wire less dev ices away fr om large mas onry stru ctures and ot her build ing structure s.
