3 pr inter featur es The printer has several features designed to make it easy to use. To learn about a feature, click the name of the feature below: 1.

5 L CD panel The LCD panel displays icons to show the printer’s status. Each icon represents one of the following: • An oper ating conditio n of the pr inter (suc h as an er r or ) • A ph ysi cal part of the pr inter (suc h as the paper tr ay) By combining these types of icons, th e LCD panel shows the printer’s status.
6 operating condition icons The LCD panel displays icons that sh ow the printer’s operating condition. The printer needs attention. Other icons on the LCD panel flash when the alert icon appears to indicate that attention is needed. The printer is busy.
7 ink cartridges The LCD panel displays one ic on for each ink cartridge. 1. black ink cartridge 2. tri-color ink cartridge When replacing ink cartridges and printheads, purchase ink cartridges and pr intheads with selection no. 14. For more information, see ink cartr idg e sel ect ion n umbers .
8 ink level gauge The Ink Level Gauge shows you when one or both of the ink cartridges are functioning properly, very low on ink, or out of ink. Full. Hall full. Very low on ink. Last portion of ink level flashes. Replace soon . O ut of ink. Replace immed iately.
9 e xpired ink The LCD panel indicates when an ink cartridge will expire soon or is expired. For an explanation of ink expiration, see expi red i n k c a r t rid g e s . To see instructions for repl acing an ink cartridge, see rep l a ci n g i n k cartridge s .
10 printheads The printhead icons appear when a pr inthead needs to be replaced. The printhead that needs to be replaced flashes. 11 normal oper ation conditions Under normal operating conditions, the LCD panel displays the printer and the ink cartridge icons (ink levels may vary).
12 buttons and lights The printer buttons let you turn the printe r on and off, cancel a pr int job, or resume printing. The lights give you visu al cues about the status of the printer. 1. cancel but ton 2. resume button and light 3. power button and light cancel button Pressing this button cancels the current print job.
13 po wer button and light The Po w e r button turns the printer on and off. It may take a few seconds for the printer to turn on after pressing the Po w e r button. The green light next to the P ower button flashes when the printer is busy. Cauti on! Always use the Power button on the front of the printer to turn the printer on and off.
14 infr ar ed lens The printer has a special Infr ared (Ir) lens. The Infrared lens al lows printing from an infrared sending device such as a Palm device, laptop , or notebook computer. For a full description of infrared printing, see inf rar ed printing .
15 paper tr a y The printer comes with a 150-sheet capac ity paper tray. The paper tray can be removed from the printer. 1. paper tra y top 2. put paper here for printing Additionally, the printer can also us e an optional 250-sheet plain paper tray.
16 loading the paper tra y The paper tray holds paper or other media to be printed. The length and width guides adjust to the size of the media being used. For ease of loading, the paper tray to p raises. Lower the top when printing. 1. paper width guide 2.
17 output The printer deposits printed pages on top of the paper tray. Pull the paper tray extension out to prev ent the paper from falling off the tray. When the print job finishes, push the tray extension back into its storage slot. 1. printed page s are deposited here 2.
18 ink deliv ery s ystem The printer’s ink delivery system consists of these parts: •I n k c a r t r i d g e s •P r i n t h e a d s •P r i n t c a r r i a g e ink cartridges Ink cartridges supply ink to the printer.
19 printheads The printer uses four printheads. The printheads apply ink to printable media. 1. cyan 2. black 3. magenta 4. ye ll ow For installation instructions, see re p l a ci n g p ri nt h e a d s . Cauti on! After installing printheads, do not open the print carriage unless a printhead needs to be re placed.
20 print car riage The print carriage is the main operating feature of the printer’s ink delivery system. It holds the two ink cartridges and the four printheads. 1. ink cartridges 2. printheads Cauti on! Do not open the print carriage unless a printhead needs to be replaced or you are asked to by an HP support agent.
21 auto matic paper-ty pe sensor The Automatic Paper-Type Sensor automa tically determines the correct paper type and adjusts the print settings for most paper or media placed in the paper tray. This feature, particularly when used with HP paper and media, provides better printing results.
22 automatic t w o -sid ed printing module ( d u p l exe r ) The Automatic Two-Sided Printing Module (duplexer) is a special hardwa re feature that enables the printer to automa tically print on both sides of a page. installing the duplex er 1. 24 supported paper t ypes Not all paper types, weights, a nd sizes can be used with the duplexer. Use one of the paper types listed below when using the duplexer.

35 color The Color tab allows you to set these options: 1. Print in Grayscale : Print in shades of gray. 2. Sa tur atio n : Intensity of printed colors. 3. Brightness : Lightness or darkness of printed colors. 4. Color T one : Warmth or coolness of printed colors.
36 services The Services tab allows you to open the Toolbox. 1. Open th e HP T oolbo x : Click this button to open the Toolbox. To see a description of the Toolbox, see too lbox .
37 c hanging default pr inter pr oper t ies The taskbar icon allows you to adjust default printer properties. Default printer properties apply to all documents that you print.

42 automatic two-sided printing To print two-sided documents automatically, the duplexer must be attached to the printer. The duplexer only works with certain media types.

86 overrid in g t he in k l evel g au g e Overriding the Ink Level Gauge disabl es the printer’s ink level tracking feature. Caution! If you use the override sequenc e desc ribed bel ow , you w ill disable the I nk Lev el Gauge for your ink cart ridge.

88 maintaining ink car tridges The following tips will help maintain HP ink cartridges and ensure consistent print quality: • K eep all ink car tr idges in the o ri ginal seal ed pack ages until they ar e needed. Ink cartri dges should be stor ed at r oom temper atur e (60–7 8 degr ees F or 15 .
89 e xpir ed ink cartridges To protect against deteriorated print quality and damage to your printer, the printer monitors the age of the ink ca rtridges. When a cartr idge has reached its expiration date, the cartridge stops working and the printer ceases to operate until the cartridge is replaced.

91 re pl a cing printheads L CD panel messages When a printhead fails, one of the fol lowing messages appears on the LCD panel (ink levels may vary): The printer will continue to print; however the failed printhead may affect print quality and speed. If several pr intheads fail, the printer may stop printing.
