2 External component identification Finding your hardware and software information Locating hardware To find out what hardware is installed on your computer: 1. 4 Removal and replacement procedures Preliminary replacement requirements Tools required The following tools are ne eded to comple te the removal and replacement procedures: ● Flat-bladed screwdrive.
Cables and connectors CAUTION: When servicing the computer, be sure that cables are placed in their proper locations during the reassembly process. Impr oper cable placement ca n damage the comp uter. Cables must b e handled with ex treme care to avoid damage.
Grounding guidelines Electrostatic discharge damage Electronic componen ts are sensiti ve to electrostati c discharge (ESD). Circuitry design and structure determine the degree of sensitiv ity.
Packaging and transp orting guidelines Follow these grounding guidelines when packagin g and transporting equipment: ● To avoid hand co ntact, transport pr oducts in static-safe tube s, ba gs, or boxes . ● Protect ESD-sensitive part s and assemblies with co nductive or approved co ntainers or packaging.
Equipment guidelines Grounding equipment must include either a wrist st rap or a foot strap at a grounded workstation. ● When seated, wear a wrist strap connected to a gr ounded system. Wrist straps are flexible straps with a minimum of one megohm ±10% resistance in the ground cords.
Component replacement procedures This chapter provides remova l and replacement procedures. There are as many as 78 screws, in 8 di fferent sizes, that must be re moved, replace d, or loose ned when servicing the co mputer. Make special note o f each screw size and location during removal and replacement.

6. Lift the display panel (4) straight up to remove it. Reverse this procedure to in stall the display assembly. 7. To replace any of the display as sembly internal components, remove the following screw covers and screws: (1) Two screw covers on the display bezel bottom edge (2) Two Phi llips 4.
8. Flex and lift up on the inside ed ges of the bezel on the left side (1) , the top and bottom (2) , and the right si de (3) until the bezel disengages from the display bac k cover. 9. Remove the display bezel (4) . Reverse this proc edure to install t he display bezel.
11. Disconnect the webcam module cable (1) from the webcam module, and then remove the webcam mo dule (2) . The webcam module is available using spare part number 708150-0 01. Reverse this procedure to install the webcam module. 12. To replace the display hinge covers, remo ve the three Phillips 4.
13. Remove the display hinge covers (2) . The display hinge covers are availab le using spare part number 640887-0 01. Reverse this procedure to inst all the display hinge covers. 14. To replace the display panel, remove five Phillips 4.0 x 2.5 screws (1) that secure the display panel to the display enclosure.
15. Remove the display panel (2) from the display enclosure. The di splay panel is available using the spare par t number 6416 63-001. Reverse this procedure to instal l the display panel. 16. To replace the display hinges, remove the two Phillips PM 3.
19. Lift up to remove the antenna transceivers (2) . The wireless antenna transceiver s and cable are available using spare par t number 639499-001 or 701878-00 1. Reverse this procedure to install t he display wireless antenna transceivers. 20. To remove the display cable from t he display panel, lift the tape (1) , and disconnect the cable (2) .

3. Move the optical dr ive connector bo ard (2) to the right, and then lift it up to disconnect it from the system board. Reverse this procedure to install the optical drive connector board. 4. Remove the three Philli ps 3.0 x 2.0 screws (1) that secure the system board to th e computer.

6 Using Setup Utility (BIOS) and System Diagnostics Setup Utility, or Basic Input/Outp u t System (BIOS), controls communication between all the inp ut and output devices on the s ystem (such as d isk drives, display, keyboard, mouse, and printer).
Downloading a BIOS update CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to t he comput er or an unsuccessful ins tallation, download and install a BIOS update only when the computer is connected to reliable e xternal power using the AC adapter.
To start System Diagnostics: 1. Turn on or restart the computer, quickly press esc , and the n press f2 . 2. Click the diagnostic test you want to run, and then follow the on-screen instructions. NOTE: If you need to stop a diag nostic test while it is running, press esc .
7 Backing up, restoring, and recovering Your computer i ncludes tools to help you safeguard your information an d retrieve it if you ever need to. These tools will help you return yo ur computer to a proper working state or ev en back to the original factory state, all with simple steps.
See Creating recovery media on page 73 2. As you add hardware and software pr ograms, create s ystem restore points. A system res tore point is a snapshot of cer tain hard drive con tents save d by Windows System Restore at a specif ic time. A system restore point contains information that Windows uses, such as registry settings.
● The creation proces s can take up to an hour or more. Do not interrupt the creation process. ● If necessary, you ca n exit the program before you ha ve finish ed creating all of the recovery DVDs. HP Recovery Manager will finish burning the curre nt DVD.
● If you want to recover the computer's original fa ctory partitionin g and content, you can choose the System Recovery optio n from the Recovery media.
Using Windows Refresh for quick and easy recovery When your computer is not working pr operly and yo u need to regain system stability, the Windows Refresh option allows you to start fres h and keep what is impo rtant to you. IMPORTANT: Refresh removes any traditional applications th at were not originally installed on the system at the factory.
3. Click Change PC settings in the bottom-right corner of the screen, and then select General from the PC settings screen. 4. Under Remove everything and reinstall Windows , selec t Get started , and follow the on-screen instructions.
To start HP Recovery Manager from the recovery partition: 1. Press f11 while the computer boots. – or – Press and hold f1 1 as you press the power button. 2. Select Troubleshoot from the boot options menu. 3. Select HP Recovery Manager , and follow the on -screen instructions.
Follow these steps to remove the reco very partition: 1. From the Start screen, type recovery , and then select HP Recovery Manage r . 2. Select Remove Recovery Partition , and follow the on-screen instructions to continue.
