Configuring t h e printer (Windo ws) You ca n connect t he printer dir ectly to a computer, or you can shar e the printe r on a lo cally share d netw ork. NOT E You mus t have admi nistrator pr ivileges to i nstall a pri nter drive r in W indows 200 0, Window s Server 2000, or Wind ows XP.
NOTE If you h ave turned on the printer , do not turn o ff the printer or unplug the cab le from the printer while the installation program is running.
Configuring t he printer (Ma c OS) You ca n use the pri nter with a sin gle Macintosh computer usi ng a USB cabl e, or you can share the printe r among other users o n a network. To install the software for a local ly shared network or for a direct connection 1.
To share the printer on a locally shared network When y ou connect th e printer dire ctly, you can sti ll share the p rinter with o ther computers u sing a simpl e form o f networking known as loc ally shared networking. Use this confi guration only in small groups or when usage is l ow.
Uninstalling the printer software To uninstal l the softw are for Windows comp uters If you are using Wi ndows 2000 or Windo ws XP, you mu st have administra tor privileges to unins tall the prin ter so ftw are. 1. If the printer is c onnected direc tly to the com puter using a USB cable, di sconnect t he printer.
Customizing the printer s oftware se tup progra m The S tarter CD conta ins a utility that allows system admi nistrators t o create cus tomized insta llation packag es that can be launched sile ntly. System admi nistrators can the n distribute a custo mized install ation package by sharin g it from a local or mapped netw ork drive.
Inst alling ot her software ● Use HP P hotosmart Essential to view an d edit photos and im age files in Windo ws. To install thi s software, insert the HP Ph otosmart Pro sof tware CD, click the HP Photosmart Essential button on the CD browser menu, and select it fro m the list of software shown (see HP Pho tosma rt Essent ia l software ).

To install or re place a pri nt cart ridge 1. Turn on the printer, open the top cover , and lift th e print latch. CAUTION The prin t cartridge carr iage may be mov ing into its cor r ect posit ion. Be sure t he print cart ridge carria ge is parked at the right-h and side of the printe r before removin g or installi ng print cart ridges.
4. Hold the p rint cartrid ge with the cop per contacts facing the pri nter, and then s lide the print c artridge into the cradle. NOTE Depe nding on the cartrid ge size, they may not align wit h each other.
For Windows You ca n align the print cart ridges fro m the Toolb ox or the printer dri ver. 1. Load plai n paper int o the input tray (see Loading media in the i nput tray .) 2. Open the T oolbox from th e Printer Pr operties s ettings. See Toolbox overview for more inform ation.
3. Click the P rinter S ervices ta b (Toolbox) or Services tab (print er driver). 4. Click Cl ean Print Cartridges and follow the ons creen instru ctions.
To store the print c artridge in the Print Ca rtridge Pr otector 1. Insert th e print cartrid ge into the p r otector and snap it securely in p lace. 2. To remove the print cart ridge from the protector, p r ess d own and back on the tab inside the protector t o release the print cart ridge, and then remove the print cartridge.
NOTE Printing from one pr int cartridge , rather than tw o, may be s lower and the print quali ty may be affected. It i s recomme nded to print w ith both p r int ca rtridges. If usin g only the P hoto print car tridge, color s may no t print corr ectly.
Inst alling th e opti onal auto matic two-sided printing accesso ry (duplex unit) The pri nter can aut omatically prin t on both si des of a sh eet of paper when a duple x unit i s attached to the back of the pr inter. NOT E The duple x unit is an optiona l accessory that is availab le for the HP Photos mart Pro B8300 series printe r.

Using t he automat ic pa per-typ e senso r The autom atic paper-type se nsor automatic ally selects the pri nt settings appropri ate for the media in the prin ter, particularly when used with HP media .
Changing print settings You ca n change print settings (su c h as m edia size or ty pe) from an a pplication or the printer driver. Chang es made from an app lication take prece dence over changes made fr om the printer driv er. However , after the a pplication is closed, the set tings retur n to the defaul ts configured in the printer driv er.
Understand ing sma rt software fea tures The printer driver provi des the following smar t softwar e features. To access the pr inter driver, see Printi ng a document .
● Pr in t in Sepi a : Print images in a brown ish tone to give them an antique loo k . On the Co lor tab, select the Print in S epia check b ox. ● Print in Gra yscale : Both black -and-white and col or documents ca n be converted to gray scale. For Windows, on the Color tab, selec t the Print in Grayscale check bo x.
To print digital phot ographs 1. Load the p hoto paper: ● If you ar e loading a st ack of photo paper, see Lo ading media in the input tray . ● If you a re printin g one or just a few sheets , you can use the front manual feed s lot. If you are printin g on thick paper and de sire a st raight paper path, you can use the re ar manual feed slot.

Printin g borderle ss Border less print ing lets you print to th e edges of certain pap er types and a range of standard p aper size s from 10 1.6 x 152.4 mm (4 x 6 inches) to 330 x 48 2.6 mm (13 x 19 inches), or A6 to A3+ . For Macintosh 1. Load the appropriate paper: ● If you ar e printing one o r just a few sheets, you can use the front or rear manual fee d slot. If so, conti nue with the steps below and load the pap er in a la ter step. ● If you are using the input tra y, see Loading media in the inpu t tray .
Printin g in grays cale The grays cale printing featur e allows you to pri nt high-quality, black-and-whi te photographs in shades of gray using a gra y photo print cartridge . For Windows 1. Load the p rint media (see Loading media in the input tray ).
Printing pa noramic p hotos This sec tion contains informatio n about printing panoramic photos that contai n borders and photos that are bo rderless. F ollowing a re guidelines for printin g panorami c ph otos: ● For hig h-quality res ults, use a p hoto print cart ridge in combi nation with the t ri-color pri nt cartridge.

Printing a documen t The st eps to print a document va ry depending on th e software pr ogram. In general , follow this p r ocedur e to print a document.
Printing with the f ront or rear manual feed slo t If yo u are printing one or just a few photos , envelopes, or sheets of paper, you can use th e front manual feed slot and leav e your regula r media in the input tray .
Loading the front manual feed slo t NOTE If there are any printo uts on the out put tray, re move them befor e using the f r ont manua l feed slot. 1. Extend the o utput tray.
Loading the rear manu al feed slot 1. Before you load th e paper, adjus t the paper guide to the size of paper you are print ing by alig ning it with the appropr iate icon below the rear ma nual feed slot. 2. Insert a single she et of paper pr int-side up into the left sid e of the rear man ual feed slot.
Printing on variou s media type s NOTE Use HP media for optimum print quality. These medi a types are specific ally designed to work with y our printer. S ee HP suppli es and accessor ies for or dering informat ion. If you ar e printing transpa rencies, HP reco mmends removi ng each transp arency as it prints an d setting it as ide to dry.
Printin g on custom -sized pape r NOT E The pap er width must be between 76.2 and 330.2 mm ( 3 and 13 in ches); the pape r length m ust be between 127 and 1,27 0 mm (5 and 5 0 inches) For Windows 1. Load the p rint media (see Loading media in the input tray ).
Printing on envelo pes NOTE If you ar e printing one or just a few envelopes, you can use the front man ual feed slot. See Pr inting with the front or rear manu al feed slot . Avoid using envel opes that ha ve clasps or windows; h ave thick, irregular, or curled edges; a r e shiny or embos sed; or are wrinkled, torn, or otherwi se damaged.
c. Click File a nd then click Print . d. Change an y other des ired print s ettings and click Print . 7. When you have finished prin ting, remove the r emaining media: a.
Printing on cards a nd smaller-sized media NOTE If you ar e printing on thic k paper (such as cardstoc k), you can use the rea r manual feed slot. See Printing with the front or rear manual fee d slot . If you wi s h to print t o the edge of the cards, see Print ing borde rless .

Printi ng multi ple pa ges on a si ngle s heet of paper You c an print mult iple pages of a docum ent on a s i ngle s heet of paper . The printer s oftware automati cally resizes the docume nt text and i mages to fit on the printed page. For Windows 1.
Printing booklets Bookle t printing automat ically arrang es and resizes the pages of a docum ent so when the doc ument is folded into a booklet, the pag e order i s correct. Performing manual booklet printing For Windows 1. Load the a ppropriate pap er (see Load ing media i n the input t r ay ).
For Macintosh 1. Load the a ppropriate paper (see L oading media i n the input tray ). 2. Click File , and then clic k Print . 3. Open the T wo-Sided P rinting panel. 4. Select Pri nt Both Side s . 5. Select t he desired binding orie ntation by clic king the appropria te icon.
Printing pos ters You ca n enlarge y our document from a sing le page to m ultiple tile s that can be pasted tog ether into a post er. You can us e this feature to enla rge a single-p age document to man y tiles depending on the size of your document.
Printing banners You can print la rge images an d bold, oversized fo nts on continuous feeds of paper. Follo wing are some guideli nes for printing ba nners: ● Use HP b anner paper fo r great resu lts. ● Remove any per forated strips fro m the banner paper before lo ading it in the input tray.
Printing labels Foll owi ng ar e gui delin es for prin ting labe ls: ● Use only paper labe ls that are de signed spe cifically fo r your pri nter. ● Use only full sheets of labels . ● Verify that the labels are not sti cky, wrinkled, or pulli ng away from the protectiv e backing.
Printi ng ir on-on tran sfers Follo wing are guideli nes for printing ir on-on trans fers: ● Use HP iron-on t-shi rt transfer paper for gr eat results. ● When pr inting a mirr or image, the text and pic tures are hori zontally rever sed from what appears on the comput er screen.
Printing on bot h sides (du plex ing) This se ction contai ns guidelines and procedur es for printing on both si des of the media. Guidelines for printi ng on both sides of the paper ● Always u s e med i a that conforms to the pr inter specif ications.
For Windows 1. Load the a ppropriate paper (see L oading media i n the input tray ). 2. Open the prin ter driver (s ee Printing a doc ument ). 3. Click the Fe a tures tab. 4. On the Two-sided printing drop-down list, sel ect Manua l . 5. Select Flip Pa ges Up to ch ange the page orientation, if desire d.
NOTE The dup lex unit is a n optional acc essory that is av ailable for the HP Phot osmart Pro B 8300 series printer. It may be pur c hased s eparately in some countri es/regions (s ee HP supplies and acc essories .) Cancelling a prin t job You ca n cancel a pr int job using one of the fo llowing meth ods: ● Control panel : Press the Ca ncel button. T his will clear the job that the printer is currently processin g. It does no t affect jobs wa iting to be processed.

Toolbox ove rview The Toolbox provides status and maintenan ce information abo ut your printer. It als o provides acce ss to docu mentation and online help tools for solving prin ter proble ms. NOTE The Toolbox is availabl e for Wind ows only. For Macintos h, see Using the HP Printer Utili ty (Macintosh ) .
Printer Status tab The Printe r Statu s tab disp lays ink level informa tion for eac h print c artridge a nd also prin ter status. The pr inter selectio n drop-down list let s you select the prin ter you wis h to use with the Toolbox utilities. It lists pr inters that are compati ble with the Toolbox.
Information tab Use the Information tab t o register the printer and display prin ter hardware information. This tab a lso provi des access to onlin e troubleshootin g through HP Instan t Support, as well as information ab out your printer u sage, using the printer, tr oubleshooting, and contact ing HP.
Helps y ou manage and forecast printer sup plies usage. ● Self diagnos tic testing for your device Runs a diag nostic test of your device. Selec t Printe r on the Self Help menu on the Insta nt Support page to s tart diagnosin g the devices. HP Instant Sup port checks the computer, and a list of configur ed devices ap pears.

Genera l t roubles hooti ng ti ps Ensure the fol lowing: ● Power l ight is on and not blinkin g. When the pri nter is fi rst turned on, it takes ap proximately 45 secon ds to warm up. ● Make sure t he printer is in the Read y state. I f lights are o n or blinking , see Printer li ghts refe rence .
Printing a demo page Printing a demo page without being connected t o a computer v erifies whether the printer is set up correctl y. 1. Make sur e the printer is turned on . 2. Press and hol d the Resume button for a few seconds. The printer prints a de mo page.
Printin g a diagnosti cs page This pag e is useful to HP Technical Support if you have a pr inter problem. 1. Make sure the printer is turned o n. 2. Press and hold the Power bu tto n, pr ess t he Resume butto n four times, and then releas e the Power b utton.
Resolving printi ng problems Printer shuts down unexpectedly Check power and power connec tions Make sure the pr inter is connected firml y to a fu nctioning alterna ting current (AC) power outlet. See Printe r specification s and Declaration of Confor mity for voltag e requiremen ts.
Chec k prin ter setup for n etwork en vironmen t Ensur e the correc t printer dri ver and print er driver p ort are being used. Fo r more infor mation abo ut network connections, see Config uring the printer ( Windows) , Confi guring the pr inter (Mac OS) , or the docume ntation provid ed by your net work vendors.
The prin ter is rejecting the pen Poor c ontact between the print ca rtridges and print cart ridge cradles may cause the pen to be rejecte d. When this occurs, try cl eaning the elect rical contacts on the pri nt cartridges and print car tridge cradles : 1.
3. Carefully clean the el ectrical contacts on the pr int cartridge with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth . CAUTION To prevent dam age to the electric al contacts, you s hould wipe the contacts onl y once. Do not wipe t he ink nozzle s on the print cartri dge.
Blank page printed Chec k for empty pri nt cartrid ges If yo u are printing text and a blank page pri nts, the print cartridges m ight be empt y. See Inserting the print c artridges . If th e Toolbox is installed, check the i nk levels of the print ca rtridges from the Estimate d Ink Level ta b.
Check the print location and length of USB cable High el ectromagnet ic fields (suc h as those gene rated by USB cables) c an sometimes slightly di stort printo uts. Move the pri nter away from the source of the ele ctromagnetic fi elds. Also, it i s recomm ended that you use a USB cabl e that is less than 3 mete rs (9.
Poor pri nt quali ty an d unexpe cted printouts This se ction provides s olutions to print qual ity problems. ● Po or q ual ity pr intouts ● Meanin gless charact ers print ● Ink is smearing ● .
Check the t ype of media loade d in the printer ● Make sure th e tray supports th e type of media yo u have loaded. See Un derstanding specification s for sup ported media . ● Make su re you ha ve selected t he tray in the printer d river that co ntains the m edia you want to use.
Chec k the marg in sett ings ● If you ar e using a com puter runni ng Windows, make sure the Mini mize Ma rgin s option i s not selected . See Changing pr int settings .
Chec k the pape r type setti ng When pri nting on transparencie s or other special medi a, select the corres ponding media ty pe in the printe r driver.
