4 Paper basics You can load many differe nt types and sizes of p aper in the HP Photosmart , including letter or A4 pa per, photo pap er, transparencies, and envelopes.
Recommended papers for printing If you want the best print quality, HP recommends using HP pape rs that are specifical ly designed for t he type of project you are printing. Depending on your cou ntry/region, som e of these pa pers might not be a vailable.

Replace the cartridges To replac e the cartridge s 1. Check that power is on. 2. Remove cartridge. a . Open cartridge access door. Wait for print carriage to move to center of product.

During the warranty p eriod the product is covere d as long as the HP ink is not depleted and the end of warrant y date has not been r eached. To evaluate the pr int quality report 1. Check the ink levels shown on th e page. If a cartridge shows very low ink levels and you find the print quality unacce ptable, conside r replacing that ink cartridge. Prin t quality typically det eriorates as cartridges run out of ink.
◦ Check the estimated in k le vels in the cartri dges. ◦ Check if the cart ridge correspondi ng to the streaked bar has the orange tab removed. ◦ Reinstall the cartri dge and make sure all of the cartri dges are properly installed. ◦ Clean the printh ead, and then p rint this di agnostic page agai n.

Placing a call Call HP support while yo u are in front of the co mputer and the produ ct. Be prepared to provide the following informat ion: • Product name (HP Photosmart B109 series) • Model numb.
Setup troubleshooting This section contains setup trouble shooting inform ation for the product. Many issues are caused whe n the product is connect ed to the computer usi ng a USB cable before the produ ct software is instal led on the computer.
Solution 1: Check the power cord Solution: • Make sure you are using the power cord that came with the produ ct. • Make sure the power cord i s firmly connected to bot h the product and the power adapter. Plug the power cord into a po wer outlet, surge protector, or powe r strip.
Solution 3: Pres s the On button more slowly Solution: The product might n ot respond if you pre ss the On button too quickly. Press the On button once. It might t ake a few minutes for the produ ct to turn on. If you press the On button again duri ng this time, you mi ght turn the pro duct off.
Solution 1: Press the On butto n to turn on the product Solution: Look at the display on the p roduct. If th e display is blank and t he On button is not lit, the product is turned off. Make sure the po wer cord is firmly connected to the product and plugged into a pow er outlet.

4. Select HP Photosmart A ll-In-One Driv er Software , and then click Chan ge/ Remove . Follow the onscree n instructions. 5. Restart your computer. NOTE: It is important th at you disconn ect the prod uct before resta rting your computer. Do not connect the product to your co mputer until after yo u have reinstalled t he software.
Check cartridges Follow thes e steps. • Step 1: Make sure yo u are using genuine HP ink ca rtridges • Step 2: Check the ink levels Step 1: Make sure you are usi ng genuine HP i nk cartridges Solution: Check to see if your ink cartridge s are genuine H P ink cartridges.
Step 2: Load the stack of p aper correctly Solution: Remove the stack of p aper from the paper tray, reload the paper, and then slide t he paper-width guid e inward until i t stops at the edge of the paper. NOTE: Do not leave u nused photo pap er in the p aper tray.
Step 2: Clean the pri nthead Solution: If the previou s step did not resol ve the issue, try cle aning the prin thead. To clean the printhead from the HP Photo smart Software 1. Load letter , A4, or legal unused p lain white paper in to the paper t ray.
To select a print speed or quality 1. Make sure you have paper loa ded in the paper tra y. 2. On the File menu in yo ur software appli cation, click Print . 3. Make sure the product is the selected printer. 4. Click the button that opens th e Properties dialog box.
Print quality troubleshooting Use this section to so lve these print qual ity problems: • Photo printouts a re hazy, blurry, or have in accurate color Photo printouts ar e hazy, blurry, or have inaccurate color Solution: For best photo color qual ity, do not allow printouts to stac k on top of photos in the pap er tray.
If this did not so lve the issue, try th e next solution . Step 3: Reformat the memo ry card in your digita l camera Solution: Check the comp uter screen for an error message tel ling you that the images on the mem ory card are corrupted. If the file system on the card is corr upt, reformat the memory card in your digital camera.

Text format is incor rect Solution: Some applicati ons cannot handle framed text formatting. Framed t ext is one of the scan document settings in the so ftware. It maintains complex layouts, such as multiple columns from a newsle tter, by putting the text in di fferent frames (boxes) in the destinatio n application.

Solution 1: Insta ll the HP Photos mart Software Solution: Install the product softw are that came with th e product. If it is in stalled, restart your computer. To install the p roduct software 1. Insert the product CD- ROM into your comput er’s CD-ROM dri ve and then start the Setup program .
• File not found • Invalid fil e name • Supported file t ypes for the product • File corrupted Error rea ding or writing the file Solution: Check to see if you have the right f older and file nam e. Cause: The product software could not open or save the f ile.
Cause: There w as not enough avail able memory on your com puter to create a print preview file . Invalid file name Solution: Make sure that you are not u sing any invalid symbols in the f ile name. Cause: The file name you entered was i nvalid. Supported file types for the product The product soft ware only recognizes JPG and T IF images.
• Out of disk space • Card access error • Use only one card at a time • Card is inserted incorrectly • Card is damaged • Card is not fully inserte d Memory card error Try the following so lutions to resolve the issue. Solutions are l isted in order, with the most likely solution f irst.
Solution 1: Clos e some applicati ons or restart your c omputer Solution: Close all un necessary applicat ions. This i ncludes applic ations that run in the background, such as screensavers and viru s checkers. (If you tu rn off your virus checker, reme mber to turn i t back on af te r you finish.
Cause: You had inserted the memory card backw ards or upside down. Card is damaged Solution: Reformat your memory card in your camera or format your memory card in a computer by selectin g the FAT format. For mo re information, see the documentat ion that came wit h your digital cam era.
Ink is drying Solution: Leave the shee t in the paper tray unt il the message disappea rs. If it is necessary to remove the p rinted sheet bef ore the message disapp ears, carefully hold the printed sheet on the undersi de or the edges, and place i t on a flat surface to dry.
Printing cannot occur w ithout one of each type of ink ca rtridge inserted into the correct slot. For more information, see: “ Replace the cartridges” on page 44 Cause: The indicated ink cartridges w ere inserted into th e wrong slots. General prin ter error Try the following solu tions.
If it appears that you are using the corre ct ink cartridges, proceed t o the next solution. For more information, see: •“ Order ink supplie s” on page 46 •“ Replace the cart ridges” on page 44 Cause: The indi cated ink cartridges we re not intended for use i n this product as it was currently configured.
Cause: The indicated ink cartridges di d not have enough i nk to print prop erly. Ink car tridge proble m Try the following so lutions to resolve the issue. Solutions are l isted in order, with the most likely solution f irst. If the first so lution does not solve th e problem, continue trying the remaining soluti ons until the issue is resolved.
3. Make sure the ink cart ridges are installed in th e correct slots. Match the shape of the i con and color of the in k cartridge with the slot that has the same shaped icon and color. 4. Run your finger alon g the top of the in k cartridges to locate any cartridges that are not snapped completely dow n.
8. Press the ink cartridg e back down into place. The tab should make a snappi ng noise when the in k cartridge is correctly seate d. If the ink cartridg e did not make a snapping noise, the tab mig ht need to be readjust ed. 9. Remove the ink cartridge from the slot.

3. Locate the ink cartridge that i s indicated in the error m essage, and then press the tab on the ink cartridge to release it from the slot. 4. Hold the ink cartridg e by its sides with the bo ttom pointing up and lo cate the electrical contacts on the ink cartridge .
8. Reinstall the ink cartri dge. 9. Close the ink cartri dge door, and check if the error message ha s gone away. 10. If you still rece ive the error message, turn the product off , and then on again. If you still receive this me ssage afte r cleaning the cartri dge contacts, you might have a damaged cartridge.
Solution 5: Contact HP suppor t Solution: Contac t HP support for service. Go to: www.hp.com/support . If prompted, choose yo ur country/region, and the n click Contact HP for information on callin g for te chnical support. Cause: The product had a proble m.
If this did not solve the issue, try the n ext solution. Solution 2: Make sur e the ink cartridges are installed c orrectly Solution: Make sure all of the ink cartridges are properly installed. Refe r to the following steps to resolve this error. To make sure the i nk cartridges ar e properly instal led 1.
4. Run your finger alon g the top of the in k cartridges to locate any cart ridges that are not sn apped complete ly down. 5. Press down on any cartrid ges that are sticking up.
11. Reinstall the in k cartridge. It should now sna p down into place. 12. Close the ink cartri dge access door, and check if the error m essage has gone away. 13. If you still rece ive the error message, turn the product off , and then on again. Cause: The ink cart ridges were not in stalled properly.
HP recommends that you use genuine HP ink cart ridges. Genuine HP ink cartridge s are designed a nd tested wit h HP printers to he lp you easily p roduce great re sults, time after time. NOTE: HP cannot guaran tee the qual ity or reliabilit y of non-HP supplies.
Previously used genuine HP cartr idge Solution: Check the print quality of the current print job. If it is not sa tisfactory, try cleaning the printh ead to see if that improves the q uality. To clean the printhead from the HP Photo smart Software 1. Load letter , A4, or legal unused p lain white paper in to the paper t ray.
Reinstall t he printhe ad. To reinstall the pr inthead 1. Make sure th at the prod uct is turned on. 2. Open the ink cart ridge door. 3. Remove all of the in k cartridges and place th em on a piece of paper with the ink opening poi nting up. 4. Lift the latch ha ndle on the print carriage u ntil it stops.
5. Remove the pr inthead by lifti ng it straight up. 6. Clean the printhea d. There are three are as of the printhe ad that need to be cl eaned: the pla stic ramps on both sides of the ink nozzle s, the edge betw een the nozzles and t he electrical contacts, and the ele ctrical contacts.
To clean the pri nthead a . Lightly dam pen a clean, lint -free cloth and w ipe the ele ctrical contact a rea from the bott om to the top. Do not go past the edg e between the nozzles and the electrical contacts. Clean until no new in k shows on the clo th.
7. Clean the electrical cont acts inside the product. To clean th e electrical con tacts in the product a . Lightly dam pen a clean, lint-f ree cloth with bott led or distille d water. b . Clean the el ectrical contac ts in the pro duct by wipi ng with the cl oth from top to bottom.
10. Using the co lored shaped icons for help, sli de the ink cartridg e into the em pty slot until it clicks in to place and is seated firmly in the slot. 11. Close the ink cartrid ge door. Cause: There was a problem with th e printhead. If this did not so lve the issue, try th e next solution .
Problem with pr inter preparat ion Solution: Check the print quality of the current print job. If it is not sa tisfactory, it could mean the intern al clock failed and the p roduct was not able to service the printhead as schedul ed. Try cleaning the printh ead to see if that improve s the quality.
