2 EN Printer Inf ormation Configurations This printer is av ailable in five configur ations, as described below: HP Color LaserJet 8550 The HP Color LaserJet 8550 comes standard with a 100-sheet tra y 1, a 500-sheet tra y 3, a printer stand, and 32 MB RAM.
EN Printer Information 3 HP Color LaserJet 8550MFP The HP Color LaserJet 8550MFP comes standard with a 100-sheet tra y 1, a 500-sheet tra y 2, a 500-sheet tra y 3, a duple xer , 64 MB RAM, an HP JetDirect print ser ver (10/100 Base-TX), an internal hard disk, a printer/copy module stand, and a cop y module.

EN Step 2: Unpacking the Printer 5 Step 2: Unpac king the Printer CA UTION Do not plug the printer into a power source until all shipping material is remov ed.
6 EN T o unpack the printer 1 Remov e all external packing tape from the printer . 2 Open the low e r left door and push down the g reen lev er on the r ight side of the fuser . Then, remov e the orange shipping notice from the fuser . 3 Open the front door .
EN Step 2: Unpacking the Printer 7 4 Remov e the orange packing material from the lowe r (green) le ver . 5 Press the white button on the lower (green) le ver and s wing the lev er to the right. 6 Remov e the packing material from inside the printer and then swing the low er (green) lev er back to the left, making sure the le ver clicks into place.
8 EN Note F ollow steps 9-12 t o attach the five stabilizing legs to the bottom of tray 4. If the five stabilizing legs (which are in addition to the f our locking wheels) are already attached, proceed to step 13. 9 Locate the five stabilizing legs that came with the printer .
EN Step 2: Unpacking the Printer 9 13 Remov e the packing tape from tra y 4. 14 Firm ly grip the handle in the center of tra y 4, squeeze the release le v er , and pull the tra y out until it stops. 15 Remov e the two orange pac king clips from inside tra y 4 by squeezing the sides of the clips and pulling them out.
10 EN Step 3: Installing the Cables T o connect the power cor d to a printer with a stand Note Make sure that the printer is off (pow er button out) bef ore connecting the power cord.
EN Step 3: Installing the Cables 11 T o connect the interface cable and power cor ds for a printer with an optional tra y 4 Note Make sure that the printer is off (pow er button out) bef ore attaching the interf ace cable and connecting the po wer cords.
12 EN 5 Push the two cab les extending from the powe r pack into the space between the printer and tra y 4 along the back of the printer . 6 Plug the shor ter of the two cables into the connector on the back left corner of the printer . 7 Plug the longer of the two cab les into the connector on the back left corner of tra y 4.
EN Step 3: Installing the Cables 13 9 Roll the printer to its per manent location, where all four wheels rest on a le vel floor surf ace, and stabilize it b y pushing the locking tabs on the tr a y's wheels to the lock ed position.
14 EN Step 4: Connecting the Printer to the Netw ork If you will connect the computer to the printer with a parallel cable , see “ To connect a parallel cab le ” later in this Step .
EN Step 4: Connecting the Printer to the Network 15 T o connect a parallel cable T o print through the parallel por t, the printer requires a 25-pin male/micro 36-pin male ( “ C-size ” ) par allel cable that is IEEE-1284 compliant. The cable is not included with the printer .
16 EN Step 5: Changing the Printer Contr ol P anel Overla y and Language (Optional) Replace the printer control panel overla y with the one included f or your language, if applicable . Then configure the pr inter control panel to show printer messages in your language .

EN Step 6: Installing the Consumables 19 T o install the imaging drum CA UTION T o pre vent damage to the printer , do not mov e the printer after the imaging dr um or any of the toner car tridges hav e been installed. 1 Leav e the printer powered on and open the front door of the printer (A).
20 EN T o install the blac k toner car tridge 1 Remov e the blac k toner car tr idge from its packaging. 2 Hold the car tr idge with both hands and gently rock it se v eral times to distribute the toner . Note Do not shake or roc k the car tridge if the orange ring has been remov ed.
EN Step 6: Installing the Consumables 21 4 Place one hand on the car tr idge and use the other hand to pull the orange ring and remove the seal. Set the seal aside. Note If toner gets on f abr ic, wipe the toner off with a dr y cloth and then wash the clothing in cold water .
22 EN T o install the color toner car tridges 1 T ur n the printer on ( power button in). 2 Press the blue b utton belo w the clear door to tur n the color toner carousel to the slot marked w ith a yello w stic ker .
EN Step 6: Installing the Consumables 23 5 Remov e the toner car tr idge that matches the color of the stick er in the carousel slot from its packaging. CA UTION Do not lift or remov e the shutter (A) on the car tr idge. Hold onto the ends of the toner car tr idge.
24 EN 9 Close the clear door . Note If the clear door does not close, mak e sure that the blue le ver is all the w ay to the left and the orange seal w as remov ed. 10 Press the blue b utton to rotate the carousel to the slot marked with a magenta stick er and repeat steps 3 through 9.

EN Step 7: Loading the Input Trays 27 5 Adjust the left media guide by pushing it in (A) and lifting it up and out (B). Note Lift here (C) to remov e paper from the tra y . 6 P osition the guide ov er the appropriate media size marked in the tra y . 7 Press the guide into the rear slot (D), and then low e r it down (E) into the front slot (F).
28 EN 9 Make sure that the media-siz e tab on the front of the tra y is set to the correct media size . 10 Slide the tra y back into the printer . 11 Attach the left output bin (A) to the left side of the printer if you did not install an optional multi-bin mailbo x.

30 EN 5 Load media into the tra y up to the media-fill mark. For e xample, up to 2,000 sheets of 20 lb . (75 g/m 2 ) bond paper will fit in the tra y . For inf or mation on loading and or ienting media, see the online user guide or the quick ref erence guide.
EN Step 8: Configuring Input Trays 31 Step 8: Configuring Input T ra ys When input tra ys are configured correctly , the printer will pr int based on media type and size and will automatically use the correct input tra y . F or example, tr ay 2 could contain letterhead; tra y 3, plain legal-sized paper ; and tra y 4, plain letter-sized paper .
32 EN Configuring Media T ype and Siz e Configuring the media type is beneficial for se veral reasons: z Configuring the media type prev ents pr inting on the wrong (and possibly more e xpensive) media. z If a user changes the type of media in an input tra y , other users can still print on the corr ect media.

34 EN T o verify communication with a parallel cab le T o verify that the printer and computer are set up correctly to communicate with each other , print a director y list. 1 T ur n the computer and printer on and wait f or the pr inter to bring itself online (the printer is online when the Ready light on the printer control panel is lit).
EN Step 9: Printing a Configuration Page 35 Comm unicating with an optional HP JetDirect internal print server If the printer contains an optional HP JetDirect inter nal print ser ver , and you cannot comm unicate with the printer ov er the network, verify the operation of the print ser ver .
36 EN 3 Reinstall the print ser ver . 4 V er ify that the configuration of the connecting network de vice (such as a 10/100TX network switch) matches . For e xample, to set the print ser ver f or 100TX Full-duplex oper ation, the por t on the network s witch must also be set for 100TX Full-duple x operation.

40 EN T o access the online user guide from the CD-R OM 1 Inser t the CD-ROM that corresponds to y our language into the CD-ROM drive . 2 If you already ha ve Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on y our computer ’ s hard drive , open Acrobat Reader and then open the online user guide from your CD-R OM drive.
EN Step 11: Windows Network Installation 41 Step 11: Windows Netw ork Installation In Microsoft Windows 9x, Windo ws NT ® 4.0, and Windows 2000, the installation software detects both the version of Windows that is in use and the language that is selected in the operating system.

T o install printing software in another language, clic k Exit and use the Structure of the CD-ROMs section in Step 10: Understanding the Software to find the path f or the language you w ant to install.
