24 Chapter 2: Pr inting T asks EN Selecting the Output Bin The printer has two output locations: the rear output bin and the top output bin. T o use the top output bin, be sure the rear output bin is closed.
EN Chapter 2: Printing T asks 25 Printing to the Rear Output Bin The printer alwa ys prints to the rear output bin if it is open. P aper comes out of the printer face-up , with the last page on top . T o open the rear output bin, grasp the handle at the top of the bin.
26 Chapter 2: Pr inting T asks EN Loading T ray 1 Note T o av oid paper jams, do not load tra ys while the printer is pr inting. T ra y 1 is a multi-pur pose tra y that holds a v ariety of paper , including up to 100 sheets of paper , 10 env elopes, or 20 inde x cards.
EN Chapter 2: Printing T asks 27 Loading T ray 2 (4000/4000 N) T ra y 2 is a 500-sheet tra y . The optional 500-sheet tra y is adjusted differently (page 29). (T ra y 2 and the optional 500-sheet tra y can be interchanged in the printer .) T r a y 2 adjusts for letter , A4, and legal sizes; these adjustments aff e ct printer perf ormance.

Choose A5 and B5 ISO as custom sizes in the printer driver f or these tra ys (page 45). Note T o av oid paper jams, do not load tra ys while the printer is pr inting.
EN Chapter 2: Printing T asks 29 Loading the Optional 500-Sheet T ray The optional 500-sheet tra y is T r a y 3 f or the HP LaserJet 4000/4000 N printers, or T ra y 4 for the HP LaserJet 4000 T/ 4000 TN printers. This tra y is adjusted diff erently than T ray 2 (page 27).
30 Chapter 2: Pr inting T asks EN 6 Set the dial on the side of the tra y so the printer will read the correct size of paper . An error message will appear in the control panel displa y if the dial is not set properly . Note Setting the dial adjusts the printer’ s sensors.
EN Chapter 2: Printing T asks 31 Printing Both Sides of P aper (Optional Duple xer) The printer can automatically pr int on both sides of paper with an optional duple x printing accessor y (duplex er). This is called duple xing. Note See the documentation included with the duple x er for complete installation and setup instructions.
32 Chapter 2: Pr inting T asks EN Guidelines for Printing Both Sides of Paper Caution Do not print on both sides of labels, transparencies , env elopes , or paper hea vier than 28 lb (105 g/m 2 ).

EN Chapter 2: Printing T asks 49 Printing the First Page on Different Paper F rom the PCL 6 pr inter driver , y ou can choose to print the first page of a document on diff erent paper than the rest of the pages . Look f or “Use diff erent paper for first page” in the printer driver .
50 Chapter 2: Pr inting T asks EN Customizing T ra y 1 Operation Customize T ra y 1 to fit your printing needs. The printer can be set to pr int from T ra y 1 as long as it is loaded, or to print only from T ra y 1 if the type of paper loaded is specifically requested.
EN Chapter 2: Printing T asks 51 Manually Feeding Paper from Tray 1 The Manual F eed f eature allo ws you to print on special paper from T ra y 1, such as env elopes or letterhead. If Manual F eed is selected, the printer will pr int only from T ra y 1.

EN Chapter 4: Prob lem Solving 63 4 Pr oblem Solving Overview This chapter will help you to troub leshoot and solve printer problems . Clear paper jams: Occasionally , paper can jam dur ing printing. This section will help you to locate paper jams , proper ly clear them from the printer , and solve repeated paper jams.
64 Chapter 4: Prob lem Solving EN Clearing P aper Jams If the printer’ s control panel displa ys a paper jam message, look f or paper in the locations indicated in Figure 18, then see the procedure f or clearing the paper jam. Y ou might need to look for paper in other locations than indicated in the paper jam message.

A configuration page does not print. A blank page prints. A message other than 4'#&; or 24+06+0) %10(+)74#6+10 is displayed.
86 Chapter 4: Prob lem Solving EN 3 Can you print from a software application? YES Go to step 4 Print a shor t document from a software application. The job will not print. A PS error page or list of commands prints. If the job will not print, and a message is displ a yed , see page 72.
