5 IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION Operator Responsibility Pump Operati on Refuel With Care PUMP SAFETY Most accidents can be prevented if you follow all instructions in this manual and on the pump. The most common hazards are discussed below, along with the best way to protect yourself and others.
6 PUMP SAFETY Hot Exhaust Carbon Monoxide Hazard The muffler becomes very hot during operation and rem ains hot for a while after stopping the engine. Be careful not to touch the muffler while it is hot. Let the engine cool before transporting the pump or storing it indoors.

10 CONTROLS CONTROLS Fuel Valve Lever Ignition Switch FUEL VALVE LEVER OFF ON ON IGNITION SWITCH O O F F F F The fuel valve lever must be in the ON position for the engine to run. When the engine is not in use, leave the fuel valve lever in the OFF positio n to prevent carburetor flooding and to reduce the possibility of fuel leakage.

14 BEFORE OPERATION IS YOUR PUMP READY TO GO? Check the General Condition of the Pump For your safety, and to maximize the service life of your equipment, it is very important to take a few m oments before you operate the pump to check its condition.
15 BEFORE OPERATION Check the Suction and Dischar ge Hoses Check the Engine Check the general conditi on of the hoses. Be s ure the hoses are in serviceable condition before connectin g them to the pump. Remember that the suction hose must be reinforced construction to prevent hose collapse.
16 OPERA TION SAFE OPERATING PRECAUTIONS To safely realize the full potential of this pump, you need a complete understanding of its op eration and a c ertain amount of practice with its controls. Before opera ting the pump for the first time, please review the IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION on page and the chapter titled BEFORE OPERATION .
17 OPERATION PUMP PLACEMENT SUCTION HEAD DISCHARGE HEAD T T O O T T A A L L H H E E A A D D For best pump performance, place the pump near the water level, and use hoses that are no longer than necessary. That w ill enable the pump to produce the greatest output with the least self-priming time.

19 OPERATION DISCHARGE HOSE INSTALLATION PRIMING THE PUMP DISCHARGE HOSE PRIMING WATER FILLE R CAP HOSE CONNECTOR HOSE CLAMP Use a commercia lly available hose and hose connector, and clamp provided with the pump. It is best to use a short, large-dia- meter h ose, becau se th at wi ll reduce fluid fric tion and improve pump output.
20 OPERATION STARTING THE ENGINE F F U U E E L L V V A A L L V V E E L L E E V V E E R R ON CHOKE LEVER CLOSED THROTTLE LEVER S S L L O O W W Move the throttle lever away from the S LOW position about 1/ 3 of the way toward the FAST position. To re start a warm en gine, l eave the chok e lever i n the OPE N posi tion.
21 OPERATION ON IGNITION SWITCH RECOIL STARTE R GRIP Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Pull the recoil starter grip lightly until resistance is felt, then pull it briskly. Do not allow the recoil star ter grip to snap back against the engine.
22 OPERATION SETTING ENGINE SPEED OPEN CHOKE LEVER FAST SLOW THROTTLE LEVER If the choke lever was moved to the CLOSED position to start the engine, gradually move it to the OPEN pos ition as the engine w arms up. After starting the engine, move the throttle lever to the FAST position for self-priming, and check pump output.
23 OPERATION STOPPING THE ENGINE THROTTLE LEVER SLOW IGNITION SWITCH O O F F F F To stop the engine in an emergency, simply turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Under normal condi tions, use the foll owing procedure. Move the throttle lever to the SLOW position.
24 OPERATION FUEL VALVE LEVER OFF Turn the fuel valve lever to the OFF position. After use, remove the pump dr ain plug (see page ), and drain the pump chamber. Remove the filler cap, and flush the pump chamber with clean, fre sh water. Allow the water t o drain from the pump chamber, then reinstall the filler cap and drain plug.
25 SERVICING YOUR P UMP THE IMPORTANCE OF MAINTENANCE Maintenance, replacement, or repair of emission control devices and systems may be performed by any engine repair establishment or individual, using parts that ar e ‘‘certified’’ to EPA st andards.

28 SERVICING YOUR PUMP REFUELING MAXIMUM FUEL LEVEL FUEL TANK TOP 1i n c h (25 mm) With the engine stopped and on a level surface, remove the fuel tank cap and check the fuel level. Refill the tank if the fuel level is low. Gasoline is highly flammable and explosive.
29 SERVICING YOUR PUMP FUEL RECOMMENDATIONS Use unleaded gasoline with a pump octane r ating of 86 or higher. Never refuel the engine inside a building where gasoline fumes m ay reach flames or sparks. Keep gasoline a way from a ppliance pilo t lights, barbecues, electric appliances, power tools, etc.

Remove the oil filler cap/ dipstick and wipe it clean. Inse rt and remove the dips tick witho ut screwing it int o the filler neck .
31 SERVICING YOUR PUMP ENGINE OIL CHANGE DRAIN PLUG OIL FILLER CAP/DIPST ICK OIL LEVEL SEALING WASHER Drain the used oil while the engine is warm. Warm oil drains quickly and completely. Allow the used oil to drain completely, then reinstall the drain plug, and tighten it securely.
32 SERVICING YOUR PUMP ENGINE OIL RECOMMENDATIONS AMBIENT TEMPERATUR E Oil is a major factor affecting performance and service li fe. Use 4-stroke automotive detergent oil. SAE 10W-30 is recommended for general use. Other viscosities shown in the chart may be used when the average temperature in your area is within the recommended range.

34 SERVICING YOUR PUMP AIR FILTER CLEANING AIR FILTER A dirty air filter will restrict air flow to the carburetor, reducing engine performance. If you operate the pump in very dusty areas, clean the air filter more frequently than s pecified in the MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE (see page ).

− 36 SERVICING YOUR PUMP Attach the spark plug cap. A loose spark plug can overheat and damage t he engine. Overtightening the spark plug can damage the threads in the cylinder head. If installing a new spark plug, tighten 1/ 2 turn after the spark plug seats.
37 SERVICING YOUR PUMP SPARK ARRESTER SERVICE (optional equipment) 8 mm NUTS MUFFLER MUFFLER PROTECTOR SPARK ARRESTER SCRE EN 5 mm SELF-TAPPING SCREWS 4 mm SCREW GASKET SPARK ARRESTER Your engine is not factory-equipped with a spark arrester. In some areas, it is illegal to o perate a n engine without a spark a rrester.
38 STORAGE STORAGE PREPARATION Cleaning Proper storage preparation i s essential for keeping your pump trouble- free and looking good. The f ollowing steps will help to keep rust and corrosion from impairing your pump’s function and appearance, and will make the engine easier to start when you use the pump again.
39 STORAGE Fuel PUMP DRAIN PLUG Stop the engine, and allow it to cool. Remove the pump drain plug, a n df l u s ht h ep u m pw i t hc l e a n , fresh water.
40 STORAGE Adding a Fuel Stabilizer to Extend Fuel Storage Life FUEL VALVE LEVER OFF When adding a fuel s tabilizer, fill the f uel tank with fresh gaso line. If only partially filled, ai r in the tank will promote f uel deterioration during storage. If you keep a container of gasoline for ref ueling, be sure that it contains only fresh gasoline.
41 STORAGE Draining the Fuel Tank and Carburet or DRAIN BOLT FUEL VALVE LEVER O-RING SEDIMENT CUP WASHER Place an approved gasoline container below the carburetor, and use a funnel to avoid spilling fuel. Gasoline is highly flammable and explosive. You can be burned or seriously injured when handling fuel.
− 42 STORAGE Engine Oil STORAGE PRECAUTIONS Align notch o n pulley with hole at t op of cover. Change the engine oil (see page ). Remove the spark plug (see page ). Pour a tablespoon (5 10 cc) of clean engine oil into the cylinder. Pull the starter gri p several times to distribute the oil i n the cylinder.
43 STORAGE REMOVAL FROM STORAGE Place the pump on a level surface. Tilting can cause fuel or oil leakage. With the engine and exhaust system cool, cover the pump to keep out dust. A hot engine and exhaust system can ig nite or melt some materials. Do not use s heet plastic as a dust c over.
44 TRANSP ORTING If the pump has been running, allow the engine to cool for at least 15 minutes before loading the pump on the transport vehicle. A hot engine and exhaust syste m can burn you and can ignite some materials. Keep the pump level when transporting to reduce the possibility of fuel leakage.

48 TECHNICAL & CONSUMER INFORMATION Carburetor Modificati on for High Altitude Operation At high altitude, the standard carburetor air-fuel mixture will be too rich. Performance will decrease, and fuel consumption will increase. A very rich mixture will also f oul the spark plug and cause hard starting.
