3 INTRODUCTION Introduction Thank you for choosing Harman Kardon! With the purchase of a Harman Kardon A VR 120 you are about to begin many years of listening enjoyment. T he A VR 120 has been custom-designed to provide all the excitement and detail of movie soundtracks and every nuance of musical selections .
4 SAFETY INFORMA TION Safety Information Important Safety Information V erify Line V oltage Before Use Y our A VR 120 has been designed for use with 120-volt AC current. Connection to a line volt- age other than that for which it is intended can create a safety and fire hazard and may damage the unit.
5 FRONT P ANEL CONTROLS 1 Main P ower Switch: Press this button to apply power to the A VR 120. When the switch is pressed in, the unit is placed in a Standby mode , as indicated by the amber LED 3 sur- rounding the System P ower Control 2 . T his button MUST be pressed in to operate the unit.

12 REMO TE CONTROL FUNCTIONS Remote Control Functions IMPORT ANT NO TE: The A VR 120 ’ s remote may be programmed to control up to eight devices , including the A VR 120. Before using the remote , it is important to remember to press the Input Selector Button e that corresponds to the unit you wish to operate .
13 REMO TE CONTROL FUNCTIONS s T uner Mode: Press this button when the tuner is in use to select between automatic tuning and manual tuning. When the button is pressed so that the AUT O Indicator R goes out, pressing the T uning Buttons u8 will move the frequency up or down in single-step increments .
14 INST ALLA TION AND CONNECTIONS System Installation After unpacking the unit, and placing it on a solid surface capable of supporting its weight, you will need to mak e the connections to your audio and video equipment.

Connect the analog audio and video outputs of a satellite receiver , cable TV converter or television set or any other video source to the Video 2 or V ideo 3 Jacks bcfg . 3. 16 SY STEM CONFIGURA TION System Configuration When all audio , video and system connections have been made , there are a few configuration adjustments that must be made . A few minutes spent to correctly configure and calibrate the unit will greatly add to your listening experience .
17 SY STEM CONFIGURA TION Y ou are now ready to power up the A VR 120 to begin these final adjustments . 1. Plug the P ower Cord ° into an unswitched AC outlet. 2. Press the Main P ower Switch 1 in until it latches and the word “ OFF ” on the top of the switch disappears inside the front panel.
18 SY STEM CONFIGURA TION System Configuration NO TE: If you choose Logic 7 as the sur- round mode for the particular input source for which you are configuring your speak ers, the A VR 120 will not mak e the LARGE option available for the center speak er .
19 SY STEM CONFIGURA TION T o adjust and calibrate the output levels, follow these steps . F or accurate calibration, it is a good idea to mak e these adjustments while seated in your favorite listening position: 1.

22 OPERA TION Operation MODE FEA TURES DELA Y TIME RANGE DOLBY DIGIT AL Available only with digital input sources encoded with Dolby Digital data. It provides Center: 0 ms – 5 ms up to five separate main audio channels and a special dedicated Low-F requency Effects Initial Setting – 0 ms channel.
23 OPERA TION Operation Surround Mode Selection One of the most important features of the A VR 120 is its ability to reproduce a full multichannel surround sound field from digital sources , analog matrix surround-encoded programs and standard stereo progr ams .

Although the A VR 120 will decode virtually all DVD movies , CDs and HDTV sources , it is pos- sible that some future digital sources may not be compatible with the A VR 120.

F or many stan- dard CD players , cassette decks , VCRs and DVD functions , the standard function icons are printed on top of the buttons .
