1 eT rex Vista C Installing the Batteries The eT rex Vista C operates on two “AA” batteries (not included), which are located in the back of the unit. Alkaline or NiMH batteries may be used (see page 56 for setting the battery type). Stored data is not lost when batteries are removed.

8 eT rex Vista C GPS Navigation The Map P age Using the Map Page The Map Page is the primary navigation feature of the eT rex Vista C. The Map Page displays a detailed map of the area surr ounding your current location. It allows you to pan the map with the ROCKER key and view your progr ess when navigating.

Sometimes, however , when you tur n the Compass On, the eT rex Vista C overrides the Compass and uses the GPS r eceiver to track your heading.

If you know the correct elevation for your location, you can increase the accuracy of the altimeter using the ‘ Calibrate Altimeter’ option.

25 eT rex Vista C GPS Navigation The Altimeter P age Calibrate Altimeter Because the eT rex Vista C r elies on barometric pr essure to determine elevation, and the pressure at any given elevation can fl uctuate, you can calibrate the altimeter to increase its accuracy .
26 eT rex Vista C GPS Navigation The Mark W aypoint Page The Mark W aypoint Page allows you to mark and recor d your current (or any other) location as a waypoint and displays name for that waypoint and a waypoint symbol. Y ou can mark your current location at any time.
27 eT rex Vista C GPS Navigation T o cr eate a waypoint with the map panning arrow: 1. With the Map Page displayed, move the panning arrow (map pointer) to the map item you want use as a w aypoint. If there is information in the mapping database for that location it highlights momentarily and display a name or address .
28 eT rex Vista C GPS Navigation Editing a W aypoint A waypoint can be selected from the Find Featur e W aypoints list and edited to change the map symbol, name, location coordinates, elevation or to delete it. Refer to page 31 for details on using the Find Feature.

30 eT rex Vista C GPS Navigation Find Menu Using Find Using the Find Menu The Find Feature pr ovides you with a method for searching for Cities and Exits, which are included in the eT rex V ista C basemaps.
31 eT rex Vista C GPS Navigation Searching for a location using Find By Name If you know the name of the location you want to find, the Find By Name search option may be the easiest method of sear ching. To fi nd a location using Find By Name: 1. Press the MENU/FIND key to display the Find Menu.
32 eT rex Vista C Using Find GPS Navigation Using the Find Item Information Page When you select a Find item and press the ENTER key , an Informa- tion Page displays with detailed information about the item. This page contains the following information: • A title (if a waypoint, it can be renamed and a map symbol assigned).
33 eT rex Vista C GPS Navigation The Find Information Page Options Menu offers eight options for using a Find Item as a tool for navigation. T o use the Find Item Information P age Options Menu: 1. With an Information page displayed for a Find item, press the MENU k ey to display the Options Menu.

35 eT rex Vista C GPS Navigation Searching for a W aypoint The W aypoints List is your storage file for all created and saved waypoints. W aypoints are stor ed in alpha/numerical order and ar e also identified by a symbol assigned from a list of symbol types.
36 eT rex Vista C Using Find GPS Navigation Searching for a Geocache The Find Geocache feature allows you to view the list of geocache locations that you have created using the eT rex V ista C or downloaded from your computer .
37 eT rex Vista C GPS Navigation Searching for a City The Find Cities feature allows you to sear ch for any city listed in the mapping database (either in the basemap or from downloaded detailed mapping data). To fi nd a city: 1. Press and hold the MENU/FIND key to display the Find Menu.
38 eT rex Vista C GPS Navigation Using Find Searching for an Inter state Exit The Find Exits feature allows you to sear ch for the nearest Interstate Exits. T o sear ch for Exits: 1. Press and hold the MENU/FIND key to display the Find Menu. Select the Exits icon, then press ENTER to display the Exit List.
39 eT rex Vista C GPS Navigation Searching for an Address The Find Addresses feature allows you to sear ch for an address if you have downloaded detailed mapping data. Enter the street number , street name and city and the Find Feature matches that data with addresses in the map database.

41 eT rex Vista C GPS Navigation Searching for a P oint of Interest Y ou can use the Find Point of Interest feature to locate a nearby restaurant, lodging, landmark, public building, park, etc.
42 eT rex Vista C The Main Menu is the directory for all unit features not in the Main Page sequence. Use the ROCKER key to highlight a feature name and then press ENTER to display the featur e page. • Satellite - This feature allows you to observe the status of overhead GPS satellites.

Options Menu Using the T rip Computer Page The T rip Computer Page provides you with a wide variety of travel data that is useful when navigating long distances.
44 eT rex Vista C GPS Navigation Using a T rack Log The T racks feature creates an electr onic trail on the map page as you travel about and is referred to as a T rack Log. A track log contains informa- tion about points along its path, including time, position and elevation.
45 eT rex Vista C GPS Navigation Using T racks 5. Highlight the “Record Method” fi eld and press ENTER to display the Distance , T ime and Auto options . Because a tr ack is made of a series of points that defi ne your path of travel, they can be placed a specifi ed “Distance” apart or placed at a “T ime” interval you specify .

T he Saved T r ack P age allows you to rename the tr ack, view the track distance , view the calculated area encompassed by the track (an area is defi ned even if the track is open ended), and specify a color for the track when displayed on the map page (Show On Map).
47 eT rex Vista C GPS Navigation Using T racks T rack Profiles A T rack Elevation Profile can be created fr om any saved track. A T rack Profile page displays when you select “Pr ofile.” Digital Elevation Models (DEM) maps can also be used to create track pr ofiles.

With the Saved T racks P age for the track or the T rack Log displayed, highlight the T r acBack button and press ENTER to display the T racBack P age . 2. 49 eT rex Vista C GPS Navigation Using Routes Creating and Using a Route W ith routes, you can cr eate a sequence of intermediate waypoints that lead you to your fi nal destination. The eT rex Vista C stores 50 r outes, with up to 250 waypoints each.
50 eT rex Vista C Using Routes GPS Navigation Methods of navigating to a destination: • When you activate the “Go T o” button on the Information Page for a User W aypoint or other Find Menu items, the eT rex V ista C creates a straight path (point to point) from your curr ent location to that location.

56 eT rex Vista C GPS Navigation Display Setup The Display Setup Page allows you to select a screen display color scheme for day and night viewing. Y ou can set the backlight timeout and the level of brightness, which can significantly save battery power .

Access the T ones Setup Page . 2. Use the ROCKER key to highlight the feature for which you want to set a tone and press ENTER to display the options menu.
58 eT rex Vista C GPS Navigation Map Setup T he “General Settings” Map Setup Page Many of the Setup fea- tures use the same type of option lists: Off/On, Most to Least, Small to Large , a scale from 20 feet to 500 miles and a k eypad for numerical data entry .
59 eT rex Vista C Map Setup - General Settings The fi rst page of the Map Setup feature is the General Settings Page. Use this page to select the map orientation. “Below” sets the map scale at which the T rack Up feature displays; all scales above that revert to the North Up map orientation.

63 eT rex Vista C Time Setup The T ime Setup Page allows you to set the correct time for your geographic location. T o use the Time Setup feature: 1. Access the T ime Setup Page . 2. Highlight the T ime Format fi eld and press ENTER to choose from 12 or 24 (Military T ime) hour formats .
64 eT rex Vista C GPS Navigation Heading Setup The Heading Setup Page allows you to specify the type of heading display and the type of North Reference used to calculate your heading. Unless you have a working knowledge of Headings and North Referenc- ing, it is recommended that you use the default values.
65 eT rex Vista C GPS Navigation Altimeter Setup Altimeter Setup The Altimeter Setup Page allows you to setup the Altimeter to self- calibrate each time you turn on the unit, to function as a barometer or to manually calibrate when you have accurate elevation or pressure data.
66 eT rex Vista C Welcome P age Setup The W elcome Page Setup Page allows you to insert a message on the W elcome Page (the first page to display when you tur n the unit on). 1. Access the W elcome P age Setup P age. 2. Use the keypad at the base of the screen to enter your welcome message .
67 eT rex Vista C GPS Navigation Pro ximity W aypoints The Proximity W aypoints Page allows you to establish waypoints that have alarm circles ar ound them at specified distances. The alarm helps you to avoid locations that are restricted or hazar dous.
68 eT rex Vista C GPS Featur es Calendar The Calendar allows you to view the following for any given day and location: Sunrise/Sunset times, moon phase, Hunt and Fish probabilities, archived waypoints for activities you want to navigate to and a day , week or month format display .
69 eT rex Vista C GPS Featur es Alarm Clock The Alarm Clock Feature allows you to use your eT rex V ista C as an alarm clock. Y ou can choose fr om differ ent alarm tones, and use the “Snooze” feature to delay the alarm for an additional seven minutes.
70 eT rex Vista C GPS Featur es Stopwatch This feature allows you to use the eT rex V ista C as a stopwatch, which includes a lap timer . Y ou can choose to have the unit recor d the lap time based on distance. T o start the stopwatch: Use the ROCKER k ey to highlight the “Start” fi eld and then press ENTER .
71 eT rex Vista C GPS Featur es Sun and Moon The Sun and Moon T ables pr ovide you with a graphic depiction of the sun and moon relative to the Earth. Sun and moon positions can be displayed for any time, date and location on Earth.

74 eT rex Vista C GPS Featur es Virtua Maze This GPS game creates a virtual maze on the screen. Y ou are placed at a central position in the maze and must explore the maze collecting flags. The lower right corner of the screen tells you how many flags remain.
75 eT rex Vista C GPS Featur es Nibbons In this GPS game, you must walk around the boar d collecting the flags as they appear . As you walk, your “tail” grows. Y ou may travel anywhere on the screen but you cannot walk on your tail, or you lose a life.
76 eT rex Vista C GPS Featur es Beast Hunt Although not a true GPS game, Beast Hunt requires some naviga- tion skills. Y ou must find and defeat the dragon with an arr ow before it breathes fire at you or you fall into one of the pits while navigating a maze of platforms.
