15 Char ging t he B atter y The batte ry is not f ully cha rged at shi pment a nd must be fully charge d before bein g used. The use of other brands of rechargeable battery could cause faults or damage to the camera.
16 Chargin g the Ba ttery 1 Plug the Battery Charger BC-40 (in cluded) into the powe r outle t using the con nection cord. 2 Load the battery into the Battery Charger BC-40 correctly as indicated by the polarity icon to st art charging. MEMO Charging ends after about 90 minutes.
17 Getting Ready Load ing th e Batte ry Battery is requir ed to ope rate the d igital cam era. At fir st, load the b attery in th e came ra. 1 Open the battery cover. CHECK Check that the camera is turned off before opening the battery cover. CAUTIO N • Do not open the battery cover while the camera is on.

19 Getting Ready Load ing th e xD-Picture Card Although you can store pi ctures i n the c amera’ s intern al memory, you can stor e many more images on the xD- Pictur e Card (sold sepa rately ). There i s a slot for the xD- Pictur e Car d inside the batter y compa rtment.
20 Loadin g the xD -Picture Card CAUTIO N • When storing xD-Picture Card s, make sure that they are kept out of the reach of children. An xD-Picture Card could be swallowed and cause suffocation. If a child swallows an xD-Picture Card , seek medical attention or call emergency number right away.

28 Taking Pictures ( q AU TO Mod e) 4 Press the shutter button fully. CAUTIO N When taking a picture using the flash, the image may disappear and go dark briefly due to flash charging. The indicator lamp blinks orange during charging. MEMO • When the su bject is n ot in the AF frame , use AF/AE lo ck to take the picture ( ➝ p.

30 Taking Pictures ( q AU TO Mod e) Taking pictures with the focus and exposure locked In th e abo ve com pos iti on, th e su bjec ts (tw o peop le in thi s case) are not in th e AF fra me. Press ing the sh utter b utton halfway at this point will result in the subje cts being out of focus.

MEMO • AF/AE lock can be applied repeatedly be fore the shutter is released. • Use AF/AE lock in all Photography modes to guarantee excellent results.

A picture is t aken wi th a slow shutter of up to 2 seconds. CHECK Use a tripod to prevent camera shake, because a picture is taken with a slow shutter.

47 Advanced Features — Photography Aperture By adjusting the aperture, you ca n change the depth of focus (depth of field). Selecting a larger number of aperture (closed) obtains a larger depth of focus. Selecting a smaller number of aperture (open) has the area in front of and behind the subject out of focus.

When the data includes a frame (file) with DPOF settings that were specified on another camera, “RESET DPOF OK?” appears.
