INTR ODUCTION Thank you f or choosing the Pictrograph y 4500N. The Pictrograph y 4500N consists of the machine main body , photosensitiv e material (donor), and receiv er (paper). It is an easy-to-operate full-color digital printer which provides v er y high image quality .

3 1 GENERAL PRECA UTIONS CA UTION: ● Do not drink water in the w ater bottle or give it to animals . ● When clearing a jam, do not touch the ther mal processing unit after opening it. The ther mal processing unit is v er y hot. ● When the machine is not to be used f or a long time (as during a vacation), unplug the pow er cord f or saf ety .
4 1.2 Room Conditions F or nor mal and saf e operation, install the machine in the f ollowing environment. ● Te mperature: 15 ° C to 28 ° C (F ree from moisture condensation) If the temperature in the room is o v er 28 ° C or under 15 ° C, proper pr inting quality ma y not be assured.
5 1 GENERAL PRECA UTIONS 1.3 Installation Space Secure the amount of space shown belo w to ensure the proper operation, replacement of consumables , and maintenance of the machine. IMPORT ANT : There is a v ent at the rear of the machine. Provide a minim um clearance of 8 in.

8 ● When storing the donor (the donor magazine) or receiver (the receiv er magazine), place it in a horizontal position. If stored in an upr ight position, the donor/receiv er roll ma y become loose and impossible to pull out of the magazine .
9 1 GENERAL PRECA UTIONS ● When storing an unsealed magazine (D or R), place it in a cool dark place. It is recommended that the donor/receiv er leading end be retained with a rub ber band to prev ent it from being wound into the magazine.

20 2.4 Printing Mechanism 1. The digital image data receiv ed from the host computer is stored in the image memor y . 2. The donor is e xposed by laser while being tr anspor ted. The light quantity is controlled according to the image data. 3. The donor is cut to the specified length.

26 3.3 Printing 1 . Use the host computer to enter the image data to be printed on the Pictrogr aph y 4500N (in online condition). ★ When the entered image data is sent from the host computer to the Pictrogr aph y 4500N, the D A T A indicator lamp star ts b linking.
27 3 OPERA TING PROCDURES 3.4 Donor Magazine Replacement ● There is a donor end detection hole on the trailing edge of the donor . When this hole is detected by the machine, the tr ailing edge is discharged as described belo w . ● When the D LED (red) lamp comes on in the transf er monitor , replace the donor magazine.
28 NO TE: Be sure to replace the donor magazine with the power s witch ON ( ). If the power s witch is OFF ( ), the machine will not detect the replacement. The D LED lamp on the transf er monitor comes on the next time the po wer switch is turned to ON ( ).
29 3 OPERA TING PROCDURES 6 . Ta ke out the core from the donor magazine and adjust the par tition to the size of the donor being used. The size of the donor corresponds to the siz e of the receiver , as shown in the tab le below . Size of donor Corresponding size of receiv er 323mm 315 mm (Double Letter Wide,etc.
30 9 . Remov e the tape secur ing the blac k light-bloc king leader and pull out the edge of the film about 0.8 in. (2 cm) from the donor magazine. Then close the cov er and lock both sides. 10. Mak e sure that the dip s witch on the donor magazine is set as f ollows .
31 3 OPERA TING PROCDURES 14. Grasp the donor's leading end and slo wly inser t the donor magazine along the guide. NO TE: Push the donor magazine all the wa y in. 15. Close the inner door and rotate the inner door loc k le ver 90 degrees cloc kwise.
32 ● There is a receiv er end detection hole on the trailing edge of the receiv er . When this hole is detected by the machine , the receiver's tr ailing edge is discharged as described below . ● Replace the receiv er magazine when the R LED on the tr ansfer monitor comes on.
33 3 OPERA TING PROCDURES 3 . Remo ve the core of the receiv er magazine and adjust the par titions to the receiv er being used. The siz e of the receiver must correspond to the donor as sho wn belo w . Size of receiv er Corresponding donor size 315 mm (Double Letter Wide,etc.
34 7 . Hold the leading edge of the receiv er and slowly inser t the receiv er magazine along the guide . NO TE: Push the receiver magazine all the w ay . 8 . Close the front upper door . ★ The message changes to "Self Chec k" and the machine star ts the self chec k.
35 3 OPERA TING PROCDURES 3.6 W ater Replacement ● The Pictrograph y 4500N uses water to accelerate de velopment. ● Replace the water in the w ater bottle when "W ar ning Change Water" is displa yed on the oper ation panel.
36 2 . Pull out the w ater supply hose and inser t it into the hole of the water coating section. 3 . Attach the stopper onto the water bottle and pull out the bottle. ★ The message changes to "W ar ning Chec k Water Bottle". IMPOR T ANT : ● Do not pull out the w ater bottle with the water supply hose inser ted.
37 3 OPERA TING PROCDURES 6 . P our water into the w ater bottle . IMPOR T ANT : ● Do not use well water . Use tap water f or drinks at a temperature of between 20 ° C and 40 ° C.
38 When the refuse (used donor) compar tment is filled with refuse, the machine indicates the necessity f or refuse disposal as f ollows. ★ The refuse LED lamp on the transf er monitor comes on and the message changes to "W ar ning Refuse Full".
39 3 OPERA TING PROCDURES 5 . Rotate the handle cloc kwise to pull out the refuse. NO TE: The refuse should be sent to the place where the donor was purchased, or kept in the donor casing or a cardboard bo x until sent to a disposal company . (See page 40.

NO TE: The pr int size can be changed (betw een Double Letter and Letter) when a 305- mm donor and 279- mm receiver are set. 1 . Press the ONLINE ke y on the operation panel to s witch the machine to OFFLINE condition.
50 ● To change the time required f or the machine to s witch into the power sa ving mode*, f ollow the procedure below . ● The time can be set at 10 minutes , 30 min utes, and 60 minutes. ● The standard setting is 10 minutes . (The 10-minute setting is recommended.
51 4 HO W T O USE THE OPERA TION P ANEL To change the resolution (dpi) of the finished pr int images , f ollow the procedure belo w . The resolution can be set at 267 or 400. NO TE: F or a resolution of 267 dpi, inter polation is ex ecuted. T o obtain e xact reproduction of fine images, such as a one-dot-width line, select 400 dpi.

72 4.15.2 Setup Using Utility A connected host (computer) could be a Windows machine or Macintosh machine . After the setting is made , be sure to tur n the pow er of PICTROGRAPHY 4500N OFF , then ON. 4.15.2.1 Setting It up on Windows This section describes how to set up this product when using in the Windows95/98, WindowsNT4.
73 4 HO W T O USE THE OPERA TION P ANEL 5 . The setup application (AdminManager) star ts up , and it shows the Ethernet address (MA C address) and the current IP address of PICTR OGRAPHY 4500N on the netw ork. (In case a subnet is being estab lished, this display ma y not be made.
74 9 . Click the [TCP/IP] tab in [Pref erences] in the [Options] menu to configure the [Broadcast Setup]. 10. Click the [Timeout] tab to configure the [Timeout Setup].

84 5.1 Regular Maintenance Pr ogram ● The regular maintenance progr am is to be conducted by the user is described below . T o keep the machine in optimum condition, be sure to perf or m the regular maintenance sho wn in the tab le below .
85 5 MAINTENABCE NO TE: Replace both air filters each time. 1 . Press the loc k section to open two air filter holders on the left-hand side. 2 . Slide the side air filter holders f orward and out from the machine. 3 . Ta ke out the old air filters and then install ne w ones.
86 When water filter replacement is needed, the f ollowing message appears. ● The " " LED lamp on the transf er monitor comes on, the message displa ys changes to "Warning Change W ater Filter", and the alarm sounds.
87 5 MAINTENABCE 3 . Remo v e the old w ater filter . NO TE: The water filter consists of the w ater filter case and w ater filter element. When replacing only the w ater filter element, do Steps 4 to 6. When replacing the entire case, skip Steps 4 to 6 and do Step 7 after Step 3.
88 8 . Align the ne w water filter notch with the holder par tition and place the new w ater filter into position. NO TE: Rotate the water filter in both directions to mak e sure that it is secured firmly . If the water filter mov es, reinser t it, making sure the notch and par tition are correctly aligned.

90 5.5 Scanner Co ver Glass Cleaning If white stripes appear on the prints in the feed direction, f ollow the procedure below to clean the cov er glass. 1 . Open the front low er door . 2 . Remov e the knob and open the scanner cleaner cov er . 3 . Mov e the scanner cleaner in and out a fe w times to clean the cov er glass .

92 6.1 Clearing Donor/Receiver Jams ● If the donor or receiv er fails to be properly transpor ted during pr inting, the machine stops and the f ollowing indications are made. ● The operation panel indicates a donor/receiv er jam has occurred. ● A number or letter b links in the monitor to indicate the location of the donor/receiv er jam.

94 6.2 Jamming at Location "1" 1 . Open the lower front door . 2 . Rotate the inner door loc k le ver 90 ° upward and open the inner door . 3 . Slowly pull out the donor magazine . NO TE: If the leading end of the donor gets caught and cannot be pulled out, push the donor magazine back in and do Steps 10 to 18.

96 If the leading end of the donor gets caught and the donor magazine cannot be pulled out, do the following steps. 10. Loosen the screw securing the knob [J12], pull the manual cutter tow ards y ou, and cut off the donor . 11. Return the manual cutter to its or iginal position, and then tighten the screw securing the knob [J12].

Make sure that the width of the protruding end does not vary by more than 0.12 in. (3 mm). ● Use care so that the receiv er's leading end does not slip back into the receiv er magazine.
