❏ If you are unable to insert th e AC plug into the electrical outlet, contact an electrician. ❏ Be sure the AC power cord meets the relevant loca l safety standards. Use only the power cord that comes with this product. Use of th e another cord may result in fire or electric shock.
❏ If you use an extension cord, ma ke sure that the total of the ampere ratings on the products plugged into the extension cord does not exceed the extension cord ampere rating. ❏ When connecting this pr oduct to a computer or other device with a cable, ensure the correct orientation of the connectors.
AL-M300 Series A 250-Sheet Paper Cassette Unit adds 6. 5 cm to the bottom of the printer. AL-M400 Series A 550-Sheet Paper Cassette Unit adds 10. 0 cm to the bottom of the printer.
Using the printer ❏ Be careful not to touch the fuser, which is marked with a caution label, or the surrounding areas. If the printer has been in use, the fuser and the surrounding a r e a s m a y b e v e r y h o t . I f y o u m u s t t o u c h one of these areas, wait 40 minutes to allow the heat to subside before doing so.
❏ Do not turn off the printer: -After turning on the printer, wait until Ready appears on the LCD panel. -While the Ready light is flashin g. -While the Data light is on or flashing. -While printing. ❏ Avoid touching the components in side the printer unless instruct ed to do so in this guide.
❏ To get the best print quality, do not store the toner cartridge or photoconductor unit in an area subject to direct sunlight, dust, salty air, or corrosive gases (s uch as ammonia). Avoid locations subject to extreme or rapid changes in temperature or humidity.
Internal laser radiation There is a Class III b Laser Diode Asse mbly that has an invisible laser beam inside the printer head unit. The printer head unit is NOT A SERVICE ITEM, therefore, the pr inter head unit should not be opened under any circumstances.

Chapter 2 Printing Tasks Loading Paper into Your Printer This section describes how to load paper. If you use special media such as transparencies or envelopes, see also “Selecting and Us ing Print Media” on page 36.
1. Open the MP tray. 2. Slide the paper guides to acco mmodate the paper you are loading. 3. Load a stack of the desired paper with the printa ble surface facing up.
Note: ❏ Make sure that you do not load paper beyond the limit mark. ❏ After loading paper, set the MP Type setting on the control panel to match the type of paper loaded. For details, s ee “Tray Menu” on page 65. When loading A5 or smaller paper on the MP tray 1.
2. Pull up the paper guide in the center of the MP tray. 3. Load a stack of the desired paper on the MP tray with the printable surface facing up. T hen slide the paper guides to get a snug fit.
4. Insert the MP tray into the prin ter. Note: After loading paper, set the MP Type setting on the control panel to match the type of paper loaded. For details, see “Tray Menu” on page 65. Lower paper cassette This cassette gives you a second paper source in addition to the MP tray.
2. Pinch the knobs and slide the paper guides to acco mmodate the paper you are loading. Note: When loading paper that is 13" or 14" portrait, extend the paper casset te.
3. Pinch the knobs and pull out the paper tray to extend the paper cassette and align the arrow marks according to the paper size. 4. Pinch the knobs and slide the paper guide to acco mmodate the paper you are loading.
5. Load a stack of the desired pape r on the center of the paper ca ssette with the printable surface facing up. Note: Make sure that you do not load paper beyond the limit mark.
Output Tray The output tray is located on the top of the printer. Since printouts are output face-down, this tray is also referred to as the face-down tray. Up to 150 (for AL-M300 Series) or 250 (for AL-M400 Series) sheets can be stacked when using the plain paper.

❏ If you do not load envelopes in the MP tray right after they hav e been removed from the packaging , they may bulge. From the computer For Windows users Double-click your printer’s icon on the taskba r. S el ec t t he jo b i n the list, then click Cancel from the Document menu. Setting the Print Quality You can change the print quality of printo uts through settings in the printer driver.
2. Click Automatic , then choose desire d printing quality. 3. Click OK . Using the Advanced setting For Windows users 1. Click the Basic Settings tab.
2. Select Advanced . Then select the most appropriate setting from the list according to the type of document or image you want to print. When you choose a predefined setti ng, other settings such as Prin t Quality and Graphics are set automatically.
Note: ❏ You cannot use a predefined settin g name for your custom setti ngs. ❏ The saved custom settings can only be used with the printer driver you saved them to. Even if multiple printer names are set for a printer driver, the settings ca n be available only for the printer name in which you saved the settings.

❏ Text, that is 96 pt or larger, cannot be enhanced. ❏ Images, such as photos, in pr int data may have low qual ity. ❏ Printing speed may slow down. ❏ The amount of toner consumed may in crease with some color documents. 1. Click the Basic Settings tab.
2. Select Advanced , then click More Settings to open the More Settings dialog box. 3. Select the Dot Correction check box, then click OK . The default setting for th e Dot Correction is on. Setting the Advanced Layout Duplex printing This function allows you to print on both sides of the paper automatically by installing the optional Duplex Unit.
4. Make appropriate settings . For details about each setting, see online help. 5. Click OK . Modifying the print layout This function allows you to print multiple pages on single sheets of paper. For Windows users 1. Click the Advanced Layout tab. 2.
Resizing printouts This function allows you to en large or reduce your document. For Windows users 1. Click the Advanced Layout tab. 2. Select the Zoom Opti ons check box. 3. If you want to resize pages automatically to fit the output paper, select the desired paper size from the Output Paper drop-down list.
Printing watermarks This function allows you to pr int a text-based or image-base d watermark on your document. For Windows users 1. Click the Advanced Layout tab. 2. Select a watermark that you want to use from the Watermark drop-down list. 3. If you want to make detailed settings, click Edit/Delete , and make appropriate settings.
4. If you select Text , type the watermark text in the Text box. If you select BMP , select the BMP file you want to use, then click Open . 5. Click OK .
2. Select the Header/Footer check box, then click Header/Footer Settings . 3. Select the items from the drop-down list. Note: ❏ If you select Collate Number , the number of copies is printed. ❏ When using the reserve job function, you cannot select Collate Number.

Printing an overlaid document You can select the registered form data from the Pa per Source drop-down list on the Basic Settings tab. For registering form data in the Paper Source, see step 6 in “Cre ating an overlay” on page 53.
Printing the copy-protected document This function allows you to prin t a document as a copy-protected do cument. When you try to copy a copy-protected document, “C OPY” is pr inted several times on the do cument.
3. If you want to make detailed settings, click Edit/Delete , and make appropriate settings. For details about each setting, see online help. 4. Click OK .
Printer’s Storage Description Compact Flash * The optional CompactFlash memory must be installed on your printer in order to use the Reserve Job function. Ma ke sure that the CompactFlash memory is correctly recognized by the printer driver before you start using the Reserve Job function.
3. Enter a user name and job name in the corresponding te xt boxes. If you selected Confidential Job , enter a four-digit number in the pa ssword text box to set the password. Note: I f y o u w a n t t o c r e a t e a t h u m b n a i l o f the first page of a job, select the Create a thumbnail check box.
Chapter 3 Using the Control Panel Using the Control Panel Menus When to make control panel settings In general, printer driver settings override settings ma de using the control panel. You should make the following se ttings by using the control pane l because these settings cannot be made in the printer driver.
5. Press the r Right button to carry out the op eration indicated by an item, s uch as printing a configuration status sheet or resetting the printer, or to view the settings available for an item, such as paper sizes or emulation modes.
Note: To restore the bookmark menus to the default values, select SelecType Init from the control panel’s Reset Menu . Control Panel Menus Note: Some menus and items appear only when a corresponding optional device is installed or an appropriate setting has been done.

Prints a sheet showing the workin g status of the USB interface. PS3 Status Sheet Prints a sheet showing information about the PS3 mode such as the PS3 version. Specifies whether paper feeds into the printer from the MP tray, the standard paper ca ssette, or the optional paper cassette unit. If you select Auto , paper feeds from the paper source contai ning paper that matches your Paper Size setting. Orientation Specifies whether the page is printed in portrait or landscape orien tation.

Designates the number of copies to be printed, from 1 through 999. Duplex Turns duplex printing on or off. This allow s you to prin t on both sides of a page. Binding Specifies the binding dire ction of the printout. Start Page Specifies whether duplex pr inting starts from the fr ont or back of the page.
Allocates additional printer memory for printing data, as opposed to receiving it. You may need to turn this setting on if you are printing a very complex page. If a Print Overrun error message appears on the LCD panel during printing, turn this setting on and reprint your data.

Clear All Warnings Clears all warning messages th at appear on the LCD panel. Reset All Stops printing and clears the printer memory. The pr int jobs received from all interfaces are erased. Note: Performing Reset All clears print jobs received from all inte rfaces.

Speed Specifies the pulse width of the ACKNLG signa l when receiving da ta in the Compatibility mode or Nibble mode. When Fast is selected, th e pulse wi dth is about 1 μs. When Normal is selected, the pulse width is about 10 μs. Bi-D Allows you to specify the bidirectiona l communication mode.
USB Speed Allows you to select the operation mode of USB interface. Selecting HS is recommended. Select FS if HS does not work on your computer system. Buffer Size Determines the amount of memo ry to be used for receiving data and printing data. If Maximum is selected, more memory is allo cated for receiving data.

CR Function , LF Function These functions are included for users of particular operating sy stems, such as UNIX. Tray Assign Changes the assignment for the pa per source select command. When 4 is selected, the commands are set as compatible with th e HP LaserJet 4.
To use the Binary data, make sure your application supports Bi nary data and that SEND CTRL-D Before Each Job and SEND CTRL-D After Each Job are set to No . When this setting is set to On , you cannot use TBCP (Tagged bina ry communication protocol) in the printer driver settings.
Font Selects the font. Pitch Selects the pitch (the horizontal sp acing) of the font in fixed pitch, measured in cpi (characters per inch). You can also choos e proportional spacing. Condensed Turns condensed prin ting on or off. T.Margin Sets the distance from the top of the page to the baseline of the fi rst printable line.
Auto LF If you select Off , the printer does not se nd an automatic line-feed (LF) command with each carriage-return (CR). If On is selected, a line-feed command is se nt with each carriage-return. Select On if your text lines overlap. Bit Image The printer is able to emulate th e graphics densities set with the printer commands.

Specifies whether the printer perf orms a carriage-return/line-feed (CR-LF) operation whenever the printing position goes beyond the right margin. If you select Off , the printer does not print any characters beyond the right marg in and does not perform any line wrapping until it receives a carriage-return character.

To enter the password, press the d Down or u Up button to select the character and press the r Right button to determine the character. After all characters are de termined, press the OK button.
Note: The printer does not enter the deep sleep mode in the follow ing cases: - PS3 is selected in Network of Emulation Menu . - MS Network is set to On in Network Menu . To recover from the deep sleep mode, press the Wakeup/Sleep button. The printer recovers automatically when it receives a print job.
Format PS3 CompactFlash (For AL-M400 Series only) Formats the CompactFlash area where PostScript in formation is stored if a CompactFlash memory is installed. Delete All CompactFlash Data (For AL-M400 Series only) Deletes all data in the CompactFlash memory if a CompactFlash memory is installed.

Feed Offset2 Adjusts the vertical position in which to star prin ting. The position moves lower on the sheet as the value increases. This setting is us ed when printing the printing on the backsi de of paper for duplex printing. Scan Offset2 Adjusts the horizontal position in which to start printing.
Adjust this setting if black dots appear on the printed page when us ing the printer in locations at high altitudes. See the table below and select a suitable value according to the loca tion the printer is being used. Value Altitude 00 m 2 1000 m 4 2000 m 6 3000 m BTR Cleaning Cleans the transfer roller.
Bookmark Menu The bookmark menu appears by pressing the OK button while the LCD panel displays Ready . In the bookmark menu, the bookma rked setting items are listed an d you can select one of th em.
The printer is canceling the specified print job and the current print job. This message appears when Cancel Job is selected after you specify the file to be canceled on the control panel. Can’t Print The print data is deleted because it is incorrect.
The paper loaded in the printer does not match the paper type setting in the printer driver. Pa per that matches only the paper size setti ng will be used for printing. To clear this warning message, select Clear Warning from the control panel’s Reset Menu .
Cooling Down The printer is cooling down. This is not an error message, an d will clear itself. Correct time using Time Setting The current time setting is reset because you did not connect the power cord fo r a long time. To clear this warning message, select Time Setting from Clock Menu and specify the curre nt date and time.
The installed CompactFlash memory needs to be formatted to use it with the printer. Select Yes to format the memory, or select No to cancel formatti ng . If you selec t No , CompactFlash Error is displayed and you cannot use the me mory for the printer.
The maintenance unit is not installe d in the printer. Install the main tenance unit. For details, see the documentation supplied wi th the maintenance unit. ! Caution: If the printer has been in use, the fuser and the surrounding area s may be very hot.
The printer has insufficient memory to execute the current task. Press the OK button on the control panel to resume printing , or cancel the print job. To cancel the print job, see “Canceling Printing” on page 109. Need Memory The printer has insuff icient memory to complete the current print job.
The paper loaded in the specified paper source ( tttt ) does not match the required paper size ( sssss ). Replace the loaded paper with the correct size paper and press the OK button to resume printing, or cancel the print job. To ca ncel the print job, see “Can celing Printing” on page 109.
There is a problem with the photo conductor unit. Remove the photoco nd uctor unit and re insert it. If that fails to clear the error, replace the photoco nductor unit with a new one. For details about replacement, see the inst ructions that come with the photoconductor unit.
The output tray reached the maximum capacity. Removi ng the printouts will prin t the rest of the print job. Replace Feed Roller C1 , Replace Feed Roller C2 , Replace Feed Roller C3 (For AL-M400 Serie.
The printer cannot store the data of your print job using th e Reserve Job function. The maximum number of print jobs stored on the printer’s memory has been reac hed, or the memory has no more memory available to store a new job. To store a new print job, delete a previo usly stored job.
The photoconductor unit may not be installed correctly. Remove the photoconductor unit, shake it, and then reinsert it. If the error status still remains, turn the printe r off and then on ag ain. If this error persists, consult your dealer. Shake and reinstall Toner Cartridge The toner inside of the toner cartridge may be unev en.
This message indicates that a ROM mo dule in the slot is being written. Please wait until this message disappears. Wrong Password No print jobs have been save d with the password you entered. Wrong Photoconductor An inappropriate photoconductor un it is installed.

Using the Pause/Release button The W Pause/Release button on your printer is the quickest and easiest way to cancel printing.

The printed image is light or faint Cause What to do Your paper may be mois t or damp. Do not store your paper in a humid or damp environment. Cover B may not be closed secur ely. Open cover B, hold both end s of it, and then close ag ain. The Toner Save mode may be on.
Cause What to do The transfer roller may be dusty. Perform BTR Cleaning in the Printer Adjust Menu . See “Printer Ad just Menu” on page 89 for details. The fixing temperature may not be appropriate. Try to lo wer the temperature by adjusting the Temp settings in the Printer Adjust Menu .
Insufficient memory to print all copies Cause What to do The printer does not have su fficient memory to collate print jobs. Reduce the contents of print jo bs, or increase the avail able memory on your printer. You can increase the available memory by installing an optional m emory module.
The printout was on the wrong side of the paper when I di d duplex printing. Cause What to do In duplex printing mode, the back side of the pape r is printed first. However, if Convert to Simplex is set to On , and a job has an odd number of pages, the last page is printed on the front sid e of the paper.
An installed option cannot be used Cause What to do The installed option is not de fined in the printer driver. For Windows users: You have to make settings manually in the printer driver. See “Making Optional Settings” on page 17 0. The optional product is not available Cause What to do The printer does not recognize the optional prod uct.
For details about your computer, contact your dealer. Printer software installation Incorrect or incomplete software installation can lead to USB prob lems.
To cancel a print job before it is sent from your computer, see “C ancelling a Prin t Job” on page 41. Printing in the PostSc ript 3 Mode Problems The problems listed in this sectio n are those that you may encounter when printing wi th the PostScript driver.
The printer or its driver do es not appear in utilities in the printer configuration (Mac OS only) Cause What to do The printer name has been changed. Ask the network a dministrator for details, then select the appropriate printer name.
