10 Loading P aper 4. Open the output tray and pull out the extension. Y ou shoul d also follow these guidelines: ■ Always load the short edge firs t, even when you ’ re printing landscape-oriented pictures. ■ When using special papers, check the paper package for additional instructions.

12 Accessing Photos After a moment, the printer reads and counts the number of images on your car d. When it’ s done, your images are available for printing (see page 17). Removing Memory Cards If your printer is connected to your computer , see page 16 for instructions on remo ving your memory card.
Connecting External Device s 13 Tip: When you connect a CD drive, you can also print photos from Picture CDs that you get from your photo lab. When you connect a digital camera or storage device, the printer treats it like a memory card. F ollow these steps to connect it: 1.
14 Accessing Photos Saving Your Photos to an External Device If you don ’ t have a computer , you can save photos that are on you r camera ’ s memory card to an external device that you connect directly to your printer . This lets you delete the im ages on your memory card and reuse it without losing your original photos.

16 Accessing Photos 4. In Window s XP , you see a scr een like the one on the right. Choose one of the supported programs or options to open, view , or print your photos. If you don ’ t see this screen, click Start > My Computer . Then double-click the remo vable disk icon to access your photos.

17 Printing Without a Computer Y our Epson Stylus P h oto R340 lets you print photos quickly and easily without a computer . J ust load paper , insert your digital camera ’ s memor y card, choose print settings from the control panel, and press the x Start button.
18 Printing Without a Computer Viewing and Printing Photos The View and P rint option lets you previe w and choose individual photos to print. 1. P ress l or r to choose View and Print Photos , then press OK . 2. P ress l or r to choose the photo you want to print.

Printing Photos from a Specific Date P rint all the photos taken on a specific date that are stored on your memory card. 1. P ress l or r to choose Print by Date , then press OK .
20 Printing Without a Computer Choosing Print Settings After choosing the photos you want to prin t (see page 17), make sur e you choose the appropriate settings for your paper type, si ze, and print layout, as described below . 1. P ress the Print Setting button.
Touching Up Your Photos 21 7. Select one of the following lay out options, then press OK . Note: If you don’t see the entire image in your prints, check to make sure Fit to Frame is not enabled (see page 24).

Cropping and Sizing Your Photo s 23 Cropping and Sizing Your Photos Y our Epson S tylus Photo R340 lets you deci de how y our photos fit on the page with cropping, expansion for borderless prints, and fit to frame. Cropping with the Zoom Buttons Y ou can use the zoom buttons to crop out only th e part of the photo you want to pr int.
24 Printing Without a Computer Fit to Frame If your photo is too long or wide to fit inside the available space on your selected layout, part of the image will be automatically cropped. This setting applies to all photos, not just borderless layouts. T o turn automatic cr opping off or on: 1.
Printing on CDs and DVDs 25 Cleaning the Roller Before y ou print on CDs or DV Ds, it’ s a good idea to clean the roller inside the printer . Y ou can do this by feeding and ejecting several sheets of plain pap er . 1. Make sure the printer is turned on and letter- size plain paper is loaded in the sheet feeder .
26 Printing Without a Computer 2. Place the CD or DVD on the CD tray with the white or printable side face-up. Make sur e the disc lies flat on the tray . 3. Insert the tray into the printer c arefully , maki ng sure it is level, not tilted up or down.
Printing on CDs and DVDs 27 2. If you want to change the layout settings, press Print Setting. Pr e s s d or u to select the following options: Note: All photos are printed in land scape mode. 3. P ress l or r to choose a photo. P ress u to choose 1 for the Copies setting.
28 Printing Without a Computer 3. If you are adjusting up and down, press d to mov e the image down, or u to mo ve it up. Then press the OK button. Y ou can adjust the position by up to 2 mm in either direction. If you are adjusting le ft and right, press l to move the image left, or r to move it right.
29 Printing From Your Computer When you print from you r computer , you can edit and enhance photos, create custom CDs or DV Ds with your text or photos, or create greeting cards and calendars. Before you start, make sure your printer softwar e is installed as described on the Sta r t He re sheet.

Select a Quality Option : ■ Draft: F or rough draft s with reduced print quality . ■ Text: F or text-only documents with higher text quality . ■ Text & Imag e: For documents with text and images with higher quality .
Basic Printing in Mac OS X 31 During printing, this windo w appears and show s the prog ress of your print job . Y ou can use the buttons to cancel, pause, or resume printing . Y ou can al so see how much ink you have left. Selecting Default Settings Y our printer settings only apply to the program you ’ re currently using.

34 Printing From Your Comp uter Selecting the Correct Paper Type When printing, always be sure to select th e correct paper T ype (Windo ws) or M e dia T ype (Macintosh) setting. This tells the printer what kind of paper you ’ re using so it can adjust the ink coverage accor di ngly .
Printing Borderless Photos 35 Printing Borderless Photos Y ou can print your photos without margins, extending the image all the way to the edges of the page. Although bor derless printing is a bit slower , you get beautiful snapshots or enlargements w ithout trimming, on these papers and sizes.
36 Printing From Your Comp uter Windows 1. S tart your photo program and open y our photo. 2. Open the F ile menu and click Print . Then click Preferences or Properties . Y ou see a screen like this: 3. Select Photo or Best Photo as the Quality Option setting.

38 Printing From Your Comp uter Printing on CDs or DVDs Y our printer includes a spec ial tray that lets you print customized text, graphics, and photos directly on any ink jet-printable CD or D VD. The EPSON P rint CD software makes it easy to import your own photos, add text, and modify your designs with a variety of special effects.
Printing on CDs or DVDs 39 Inserting a CD or DVD Make sure th e da ta, mu sic , or vi deo is b ur ned on your ink jet -p rin tab le CDs or DVD s b efo re you print.
40 Printing From Your Comp uter 2. Place the CD or DVD on the CD tray with the white or printable side face-up. Make sur e the disc lies flat on the tray . T o print on a small CD (8-cm), place the small CD ring on the tray first, then place the CD inside the ring.
Printing on CDs or DVDs 41 Printing Your Design After you have cr eated your design and loaded a CD or DVD, y ou ’ re ready to print. Note: For inform ation on designing CDs and DVDs, see the EPSON Print CD on-screen Help. 1. Open the F ile menu and select Print .
42 Printing From Your Comp uter 4. Make sure Stylus Phot o R340 is selected, then click Print Position Confirmation Pattern (W indow s) or Print Position Check Pattern (Macintosh). 5. Click Print . The confirmation pattern is printed on the position check disk or CD.
Printing on CDs or DVDs 43 7. Open the F ile menu and select Print , then click the Position Adju stment or Adjust Print Position button. Y ou see a screen like this: 8. Make sure Enter Values (Wi nd o ws ) o r Value Entry (Macintosh) is checked. Input the A distance in the Height (Top) or Top Space box.
44 Printing From Your Comp uter 7. After the first pattern is printed, adjust the setting, then repeat steps 3 through 6, selecting Second or Second Time to print th e second pattern. Note: You can print three den sity patterns on one disc. Each pattern is printed in a different location.
45 Maintaining Your Printer This chapter describes maintenance procedures to keep your printer working its best and preparation steps for mo ving your printe r .
46 Maintaining Your Printe r 4. T o begin cleaning, press Print . The printer makes noise and you see a progress bar on the LCD scr een. Cleaning takes about 30 seconds. Caution: Do not turn off the printer or interrupt the cleani ng process. 5. When cleaning is done, press OK to run a nozzle check to confirm the print head nozzles are clean.
Replacing an Ink Cartridge 47 Replacing an Ink Cartridge Y ou can chec k the status of the ink cartridges by looking at the icons on the control panel. 1. P ress Setup. 2. P ress d to choose Ink Levels , then pr ess OK . The level of ink shown on the icons indicates the approximate amount of ink remaining.
48 Maintaining Your Printe r Removing and Installing Ink Cartridges Be sure y ou have a new ink cartridge before you begin. Once y ou start the ink cartridge replacement procedur e, you must complete all the steps in one session. 1. Make sure the printer is turned on and not printing, then open the printer cover .
Replacing an Ink Cartridge 49 5. U nwrap the new ink cartridge. Caution: Don’t touch the green circuit board or remove any labels. 6. Lower the cartridge into the holder , with the green circuit board facing the front. Then gently push the cartridge down until it clicks into place.
50 Maintaining Your Printe r Aligning the Print Head If your printouts contain misaligned vertical lines or horizontal banding, you may need to align the print head. Y ou can align the print head either from the printer’ s con trol panel or using your printer software.
Transporting the Printer 51 4. U se a soft, dr y cloth to clean the LCD scr een and preview monitor . Do not use liquid or chemical cleaners on these parts. 5. If ink has spilled inside the printer , wipe it off only in the area shown below using a soft, damp cloth.

Diagnosing Problems 55 Running a Printer Check Y ou may need to r un a printer check to see if a problem comes from the printer itself or some other source. 1. Ma ke su re an y me mo r y ca rds a re rem oved (p age 16) , th en d isc onn ec t th e pr int er cabl e from the printer .
56 Problem Solving 5. Compare the quality of the printed check page with the sample s hown below . If there are no print quality problems, such as gaps or mi ssing segments in the test lines, the printer itself is fine.
Printer Problems 57 ■ With Windo ws 2000, if you see an error message or your softwar e doesn ’ t install correctly , you may not have software installation privileges. Contact your System A dministrator . ■ Make sure W ind ows 98SE, Me, 2000, or XP was pr einstalled on your system.
58 Problem Solving Printing is too slow. Make sure y our system meets the requirements listed on page 67. If you ’ re printing a high-resolution image, y ou need more than the minimum requir ements listed. Y ou may also need to: ■ Clear space on your har d drive or run a defragmentation utility .
Print Qualit y Problems 59 Print Quality Problems You see banding (light lines). ■ The print head nozzles may need cleaning; see page 45 for instructions. ■ Select a higher print quality and turn off High S peed mode. See page 29 (Windows) or page 31 (Macintosh).
60 Problem Solving Make sure you disable the thick paper and envelopes op tion before printing on other types of paper , or print quality may be reduced. Your printout is grainy. ■ T ry using a higher quality paper . ■ Select a higher print qu ality setting.
Problems With Paper Feeding 61 ■ Colors will change slightly after dr ying. W ait for 24 hours and check your print again to see if the colors look right.
62 Problem Solving CD/DVD Printing Problems Images and text are not centered on the CD/DVD. Adjust the print position as described on page 41. Ink smears on the CD/DVD or printing is too light. ■ Adjust the print density as described on page 43. ■ Adjust the brightness or contrast (see the EPSON P rint CD on-scre en help for details).
Miscellaneous Printout Problems 63 The margins are incorrect. ■ Make sure the paper settings are correct for your paper size. ■ Make sure the paper is positioned corr ectly in the feeder , all the way to the righ t. Slide the left edge guide against the paper .
64 Problem Solving Uninstalling Printer Software Y ou may need to uninstall and then reinstall yo ur printer driver and utilities. F or example, this might be necessary when you upgrade your operating system.
