8 Printing From Start to Finish Loading Paper Make sure yo ur printer and computer are tu rned on . 1. Place your pa per agai nst the ri ght edg e of the she et feeder , behind the tab. 2. Press in the lockin g tab on the l eft edge guide and s lide it ag ains t the pap er.

Place the env elopes against t he righ t edge of th e sheet feeder, beh ind th e tab. Press the lockin g tab on th e left edge guide a nd slide it agai nst the enve lopes .

Make sure yo u have pa per in the printer, a s described on page 8. After yo u create your document in a software program, follow t hese steps to print.

Click the Layout tab if you want to reduce or enlarge your printed image, pri nt multiple l ayouts, or add a watermark.

Printing From Start to Finish 17 ■ ICM (Image Color Matching; Windows only): For m atching colors as closely as poss ible with IC M-compatible monitors or scanne rs. ■ sRGB (standard Red Green Blue; Wi ndows only): Fo r color matching with other sRGB devices, or for i mages designed for the Web.

That ’ s wh y the Media Type s etting is so important . It tells your prin ter what kind of paper you ’ re u sing an d adju sts the ink coverage accordingly.

Followin g are som e of the way s to get pho tos you can prin t: ■ When you have your pictures developed, g et them on a disk or CD-ROM.

You see buttons for each step you need to follow, as shown. 3. Select a “ rol l of film ” or click the New Rol l button to crea te a new one.

26 Maintaining Your Printer When you don ’ t turn on you r pr inte r fo r a lon g t ime, th e p rint qual ity can decline. It ’ s a goo d idea to turn o n your p rinter at leas t once a month t o maintain good pr int qua lity. Running the H ead Cleaning Utility 1.

Each colored square should be soli d, with no gaps or line s, as shown : ■ If your printout looks okay, y ou ’ re done. ■ If you see any white lines or ga ps (as shown), clean the print head again; see page 26 for instructions.

Maintaining Your Printer 29 Removing and Installing In k Cartridges Be sure you have a new ink cartridge be fore you begin. Onc e you start the ink cartri dge re place ment p roc edure, you must co mple te all the s teps in one sessi on.
30 Maintaining Your Printer 4. Lift the cartri dge out o f the printe r and dispose of it carefull y. 5. Unwrap the new ink cartridge. Then remove only the yellow tape se al on top. 6. Tilt the new c artridge toward you slight ly as y ou inse rt it . Lower the cartridge so that the tabs rest on the hooks.
Maintaining Your Printer 31 7. Press down firmly o n the ink cartridge clamp unt il it sna ps in place. 8. If you need to re place the other ink cartridge, repeat steps 3 thro ugh 7 before continuing wi th step 9. 9. Press the e ink replacem ent button a nd close th e print er cover.
32 Maintaining Your Printer Aligning the Prin t Head If your printo uts cont ain mi salign ed vertica l lines, yo u may need t o align t he print head. Your p rinter must be con nected directly to your comp uter (n ot over a netwo rk) to use the Prin t Head A lignmen t utility .
Maintaining Your Printer 33 Cleaning the Printer To keep your printe r working at its best, you sho uld clean it several tim es a year. 1. Turn off the printer, unpl ug the power cord, and disconnect t he printer cable. 2. Remove all paper, then use a soft brush to clean any dust or dirt from t he sheet feeder.
34 Maintaining Your Printer Transportin g the Printer If you move your p rinter some distance, you need to prepare it for transportation i n its origina l box or one o f a simila r size. To avoi d damage, alwa ys lea ve the i nk cart ridges insta lled w hen transp orting the pri nter.

Solving Problems 37 Diagnosing Printer Problems First, chec k th e pri nte r ’ s lights a s described below, o r run a printer check as described on pa ge 38 . Lights Ex planatio n Green P power light flashes The printer is receiving a print job, replacing an i nk cartridge, charging ink, or cleaning the print head.
38 Solving Problems Runnin g a Printe r Check You can run a pri nter check t o determ ine wheth er a problem come s from the pri nter itself or some other source. The printer check also shows how much black and color ink you h ave lef t. 1. Make sure both the printer and compute r are turned off.

40 Solving Problems ■ In Windows 2000 or XP, don ’ t select Block under Control Panel> System> Hardware> Driver Signing ; select Ignore or War n instea d. ■ If you ’ re using Windows 98, Me, 2000, or XP, make sure your system was not upgraded from Wind ows 95.
Solving Problems 41 Your printer makes noise when you turn it on or after it has been sitting for a while. Your pri nter is pe rforming ro utin e mainten ance. Printing i s too slow . Make sure your system mee ts the requirements listed on page s 49 and 50.
42 Solving Problems Your printout is blurry or smeared. ■ Make sure your pape r isn ’ t damp or curled, or loaded face down (the printable side should be face up). If it ’ s damp or curled, reload a new stack of pa per. ■ Use a sup port sh eet wit h specia l paper, or try loading your pa per one sheet a t a tim e.
Solving Problems 43 You see wrong or missi ng colors. ■ Make sure the Ink option is set to Color for color images and your software is s et for color printin g. ■ The print he ad no zzles ma y need cleaning; see page 25 fo r instruction s. ■ The ink cartridges may be old or low on ink.
44 Solving Problems Paper Feedin g Problems Too many copies are printin g. Make sure tha t the Copi es op tion in your printer so ftware or pro gram is no t set for m ultip le copies . Paper doesn ’ t eject fully or is wrinkled. ■ If the paper doe sn ’ t eje ct fu lly , you may have set the wrong p aper size.
Solving Problems 45 Misce llaneous Prin tout Problem s The image is inverted, as if vi ewed in a mirror. Turn off Flip Horizontal in the Ad van ced window or th e mirror setting in your program. (If you ’ re printing on EPSON Iron-On Co ol Peel Transfe r Paper, the image shou ld be inverted.
