6 PictureMate User’s Guide This User’s Guide tells you how to print from PictureMate, TM print fro m a computer, troubleshoot Pict ureMate, save your ph otos, and more . See th ese docu ments for additional informat ion: ■ To set up your PictureMate, see th e S tart Here sheet .

8 Loading Paper 1. Open the o utput tr ay. Note: Keep th e Pict ureMate handle t o the ba ck, unde r the pa per feeder and al l the way do wn, to a llow pap er to feed through. 2. Op en the pape r supp ort. 3. Pull up the t op of the pa per support. 4.
9 5. Slide the edge guide sn ug agains t the pape r, but not so tight th at the pa per is bent. Note: Alwa ys keep unuse d paper in the or iginal packa ge and s tore it flat to prevent c urling.
10 Printing Fro m Your Comput er When you print from your computer, yo u can edit, enhance, and organiz e your photos, using your photo soft ware, such as Adobe ® Phot osho p. ® Before you start, ma ke sure your PictureMate software is installe d as describe d in the Using Pict ureMate Wit h a Comput er booklet.

16 Macin tosh O S 9 1. From the F ile menu , select Page Setup . You see the follo wing: 2. Make sure PictureMate is selected. If not, you nee d to select it i n the Chooser. 3. 17 ■ If you want to adjust your photo colo rs, you can change th e Color Opt ion. Select Auto Correction to automatically adjust colors, or Sep ia to change the colors to brown for an old-fashioned look, or Black & White to change a color photo to a black and white one .

26 You can choose any of th e optio ns to copy, view, o r print your photos. To copy photo s to your computer, sele ct Copy pictures to a fold er on my computer and click OK . Follow t he on-screen instru ctions to select a folder for your photos and copy them.
27 Config uring P hotoStarter Follow th ese steps to set up Ph otoStarte r to copy p hotos to your co mputer: 1. When you see th is mess age, click Next . The Phot oStarte r setup a ssistan t open s: 2. Click Next again. The setup ass istant asks you a se ries of questi ons about how yo u want PhotoStarter to work.

29 ■ For Windows 98 or Me, make sure the card light on PictureMate is not flashi ng. ■ On a Macintosh, drag the mem ory card icon from your desk top to th e trash.
30 ■ For a CD-R/RW or Zip drive, connect your drive’s USB cable to the EXT/IF port on the back of your PictureMate. Inse rt a CD-R or Zip disk in the drive. ■ For a flas h memory drive, plug it into the EXT/IF p ort on the back of PictureMate. Note: Pictu reMate c hecks to make sur e there i s enou gh free sp ace for your photos.
31 7. When you r phot os are saved, y ou see the followi ng scre en. Pres s OK . Caution: Don’t remove th e drive or memory card while th e photos a re being saved, or you ma y lose photos o n your c ard or dr ive. If y ou need to stop t he backup , press th e Cance l button.

36 Inserting Your Memory Card 1. Make sure PictureMate is on, then flip down the memo ry card door. 2. Insert the memory card into on e of th e three slot s, as sh own. 3. Push the card in until it stops (it won’t go in all t he way). When the card is in, the card light com es on.
37 4. Close the me mory card door. Note: Insert ju st one ca rd at a time . Pict ureM ate can’t read multi ple car ds at once. Removing Your Memory Card To remove a card, pull it straight out o f the PictureMate slo t. Caution: Do not remov e a card while th e card ligh t is flashi ng, or yo u may lose data on the car d.
38 Press Cancel if you have already printed a proo f sheet for t he photos currently on your card or if you want to p rint all yo ur photos and don’t need to see a proof sheet.
39 Tip: To start the Pi ctureMa te Wizard again, remove and re-i nser t your card (se e Inserting Y our Memory C ard ). Printing Some of Your Photos From the P ictureMate Print Wi zard To print on e or several of your pho tos, follow th ese ste ps: 1.

When th e photo ca rtridge i s low, it’s a good idea to ge t a new Pict ureMat e Print P a ck, which includes a new PictureMate Phot o Ca rtridge (ink) and 100 sheets of PictureMate Photo Pape r.

74 3. Slide the cartri dge straig ht in to the sl ot, label s ide up, until i t is fully insert ed. Push in both sides evenly to make s ure it is not crooke d. If eithe r side is stic king out, rem ove th e cartridge and reinsert it so the cartridge is straig ht.
75 4. Move the lever rig ht to the Lock positio n. If it does no t lo ck in place, t he cartridge is crooked; you ne ed to push in whichever side is sticking out too far. (See step 3. ) Caution: If the ca rtridge is not inserted correc tly, ink may lea k out.
76 When P ictu reMat e reco gnizes the new photo c artri dge, it starts ch arging t he in k and you see a n ink char ging message. When charging is complete, you can begin prin tin g aga in. Taking PictureMate With You PictureMate’ s handle makes it ea sy to carry short dista nces.
77 5. Disconnect the po wer cord and any co nnecte d USB cable from the back of PictureMate. 6. Pack both the PictureMate and its power cable in the box that PictureMate came in, or in th e op tiona l Carr yin g Case . Caution: Make su re the p hoto ca rtrid ge is in stalled b efore transp orting.
78 Caution: Never use a hard or abrasi ve brus h, or alco hol or t hinner for cleaning ; they can damage t he co mponents an d case. Don’t get water on the comp onents a nd don ’t spr ay lubric ants o r oils in side Pictur eMate.

80 If you see any gaps (as shown below), yo u need to clean the print head again. 7. If ther e are ga ps, pres s OK to clea n the prin t hea d agai n. If th ere a re no g aps, pres s Cancel to go back to the PictureMate Main Menu. If you don’t see any improveme nt after cl eaning three or fo ur times, refe r to Solving Pro blems .
81 5. Press the Print button when you see the next me ssage. 6. When th e pattern p rints, l ook at the print and see which l ine patte rn is the straighte st. (You ma y need t o use a magn ifying glas s.) 7. Press or to highlight the number for the best p attern in set #1 (1 to 15), then p ress OK .
82 Macintosh OS X : Open th e Applicat ions folder and sel ect EPSO N P rint er Util ity . Sel ect PictureMate in the pri nter list, click OK , and select Nozz le Check . Macintosh OS 9 : Open the Fil e menu and c hoose Page Setup or Pri nt . Click the utility button, t hen click the Nozzle Check button.
83 3. Follow th e instructions on the s creen to cle an the pri nt head. Clean ing takes abo ut 40 seco nds. Picture Mate ma kes some noise a nd its sc reen displa ys prog ress m essages . Caution: Never tu rn off Picture Mate w hile it is cleani ng its print h ead, un less i t hasn’t moved or mad e nois e for more than 5 m inutes.
84 Examining the N ozzle Check Patter n Exam ine the n ozzle check p attern you p rinted. Each staggered li ne should be sol id, with no gaps, as shown. ■ If your printout looks oka y, you’re done. ■ If you see any gaps (as shown be low), clean the print head again.

89 Runnin g a Pri nter Check You may nee d to run a p rinter chec k to see if a pro blem com es from PictureMate itself or some othe r source. 1. If PictureMate is connec ted to your co mputer or other USB device, make sure they are both turne d off. Then disconnect the USB cable from PictureMate.
90 6. PictureMate prin ts a pag e showing a nozzle che ck pattern. (If the pattern has gap s, you need t o clean the pri nt head; see Improvin g Print Quali ty .
91 ■ Make sure Windows 98 SE, Me, 2000, or XP was preinstalled on your system. The USB Printer Device Dri ver may not insta ll correctly if you’ve upgraded from Windows 95. ■ Make sure the USB Controlle r is working properly in Device Manager. See your Windows help system for details.
92 Printing is t oo slow. Because of Pi ctureMate’s high print quality, it m ay take a l ittle while to print yo ur photos. If yo u are printin g from a co mput er, c heck th e requ irem ents in Syste m Requ irem ents . If you’re prin ting a hi gh-resolut ion imag e, you nee d more than the minimum req uirem ents liste d.
93 Print Quality Problems You see banding (light lines). ■ The pr int h ead ma y ne ed cl eaning ; see C l eaning the Print Head Directl y from PictureMate or C lea ning t he Pr int Head Usin g the C omp uter for instruction s. ■ Make sure the gl ossy, printa ble side of the paper is face up.
94 ■ The pho to cart ridge may be old or low on ink. See Replaci n g the P h oto Cartr idge for instructions on replacing it. ■ Make sure your paper isn ’t da maged, old , dirty, or loade d face down. If it is, reload a new stack of paper wit h the glossy, print able side up.
95 ■ Use new pa per, loaded p rintabl e side up. Don ’t load pa per abov e the arrow mark on the left edg e guide. Load a maximum of 20 sheets. ■ Place th e paper ag ainst th e right edg e and sli de the left edge g uide again st it, but not too tight .
96 ■ Your photo size may not matc h the width/he ight prop ortions (as pect ra tio) of the paper size or layo ut you’re us ing. Phot os may be cropped to fit th e paper a nd layout .
