5 TIPS ON WO OD HE ATING Wood is a re newabl e energy. It is also a ver y clean h eat sou rce wh en used with appl iances that are certified b y the U.S. Environmental Protection Agen cy (EPA), a stand ard accepted in Canada as w ell. EPA-certified wood sto ves are different than conventional wood stoves .
6 SECTION 1.0 - INSTALLATION When inst alled and operated as described in these instructions, t he Sahara wood stove is suitable for use as a freestanding wood stove in residential installation s. The S ahara wood stove is not int ended for installa tio n in a bedroom or a mobile home.
7 1.3 CLEARANC ES Clearances t o any combustibles when measured directly from the floor protector to t he ceiling must be a minimum of 84" (2134 mm). C learances to any combustibles when m easured di rectly from the front of the stove must be a minimum of 48" (1219 mm).
8 1.3.1 Reduced clearances using shielding You may decrease the mini mum clearances to combustible materials by installing heat radiation shields between the walls or the ceiling and the stove. Those heat radiation shields must be installed permanently , and must be made of a heat-resistant or heat-tolerant material.
9 1.4 FLOOR PROTECTOR I f th e stove is to be installed on top of a combustible floor, it must be guar ded by a non-combust ible material extending at l east 18 ” (300mm ) from th e front and 8” (200mm) from the sides and the back of the fir eb ox.
10 SECTION 2.0 CHIMNEY ( FLUE SYSTEM) 2.1 DEFINITIONS For clarity , the following definitions should be used with respect to these instruction s: • A chimney system consists of a conn ector off th e top of th e stove, and a chimne y , which attaches to the connector and terminates outside the house.
11 I f you are using a masonry chimney , it is important that it be built i n com pliance wit h the s pecification s of th e Building Code. I t must be lined with fire clay bricks, or clay tiles, sealed together with fire cement, or h ave a listed solid fuel burning stainless st eel liner.

I t is therefore not designed to support excessive heat caused by the addition of chemicals in manufactured logs.

31 SECTION 4.0 MAINTENANCE 4.1 CLEANING AN D PAINTING Y OUR STOVE Clean t he sto ve frequently so that soot, ash, and creosote do not accumulate. Do n ot attempt to clean the stove when the unit is hot. Special care m ust be taken with gold plated surfaces in order to maintain the finish at its original brilliance.

33 4.5 CHIMNEY (FLUE) C LEANING Regular chimney (flue) maint enance, as well as good burning practices, are requ ire d to pre ven t ch imn ey fire s. When wood (especially green wood) is burned without adequate heat or air supply , it produces tar and other organic vapours ( smoke ), which combine wit h expelled moi sture to form creosote.
