5 This section provides information about setting up your Studio 14z laptop and connecting peripherals. Before Setting Up Y our Computer When positioning your computer , ensure that you allow easy access to a power source, adequate ventilation, and a level surface to place your computer .
6 Setting Up Y our Studio Laptop Connect the AC Adapter Connect the AC adapter to the computer and then plug it into an electrical outlet or surge protector . NOTE: Use only Dell AC adapter family P A-2E or P A-12 with your computer . WARNING: The AC adapter works with electrical outlets worldwide.
7 Setting Up Y our Studio Laptop Connect the Network Cable (Optional) T o use a wired network connection, connect the network cable. Press the Power Button.
8 Setting Up Y our Studio Laptop Microsoft ® Windows Vista ® Setup Y our Dell computer is preconfigured with Windows Vista. T o set up Windows Vista for the first time, follow the instructions on the screen. These steps are mandatory and may take up to 15 minutes to complete.

14 Y our Studio 14z laptop has indicators and buttons that provide information and enable you to perform common tasks. The connectors on your computer provide the option of attaching additional devices.
15 Using Y our Studio Laptop 1 ExpressCard slot / 8-in-1 Media Card Reader adapter – Provides support for additional memory , wired and wireless communications, multimedia, and security features. Supports 34 mm ExpressCards. If you have ordered an 8-in-1 media card adapter , it is installed in the slot.
16 Using Y our Studio Laptop 2 Audio out/Headphone connectors (2) – Connects one or two pairs of headphones, or sends audio to a powered speaker or sound system. The audio signal is the same for both connectors. 3 Audio in/Microphone connector – Connects to a microphone or inputs signal for use with audio programs.

21 Using Y our Studio Laptop 1 Keyboard/Backlit keyboard (optional) – If you have purchased the optional backlit keyboard, the F6 key has the backlit keyboard icon on it. The optional backlit keyboard provides visibility in dark environments by illuminating all symbols on the keys.

33 Solving Problems Wired Connections If the network connection is lost — The cable is loose or damaged. Check the cable to ensure it is plugged in • and not damaged.
34 Solving Problems If the power light is solid white and the computer is not responding — The display may not be responding. Press the power button until the computer turns off and then turn it back on. If the power light is blinking white — The computer is in standby mode.
35 Solving Problems If you experience other memory problems — Ensure that you are following the memory • installation guidelines (see the Service Manual on the Dell Support website at support.dell.com ). Check if the memory module is compatible • with your computer .
36 Solving Problems NOTE: Y our computer does not have an internal optical drive. Use an external optical drive or any external storage device for the procedures that involve discs. If the computer stops responding or a solid blue screen appears — WARNING: Y ou might lose data if you are unable to perform an operating system shutdown.
