Chapter 1 Introduction This chapter gives an overview of the features of the Cyclades AlterPath KVM/net. This chapter describes how ad ministrators and operators can use the KVM/net features to securely manage c onnected computer systems and a large v ariety of devices from anywhere on the local area network or on the Internet.
Description 2 AlterPath KVM/net Inst allation, Administration, an d User ’s Guide Description The KVM/net is a 1U rac k-mountble de vice that serves as a single acc ess point for administering and using servers and oth er devices through inband and out-of-band access methods.

Secondary KVM units such as the Cycl ades AlterPath KVM Expander or an AlterPath KVM can be casc aded for extended KVM server connections.

The W eb Manager runs in a browser and pr ovides a real-time view of all the equipment that is connected to the KVM/ net.

Introductio n 21 Cascaded Devices Cascaded Devices The KVM/net supports cascading, which allows administra tors to connect secondary KVM units to a primar y KVM/net. Cascading allows administrators to increase the number of managed devices to up to 1 024 servers with a centralized c onfiguration and access interface.

Introductio n 23 Cascaded Devices Administrators can conn ect up to 32 KVM units to the master KVM/net. Each cascaded KVM device has two management ports that can be connected to the primary KVM/net. Note: Y o u must connect the master KVM/net’ KVM port to User 2 on the slave.
