10 3 Safety 3.1 General Safety Instructions Read these operatin g instructions c arefully prior to commiss ioning of the PROT ECT A. UPS an d observe the safety instructions! Only us e the unit if it .
11 The outp ut m ay be live, e ven if th e UP S is not connected to the mains suppl y, as the UPS has its own internal po wer suppl y (battery)! For health a nd safet y re asons, the unit m ust be earthed correctl y! PROTECT A.
12 ♦ Condensation m ay occur if the U PS is brought f rom a cold environm ent into the room where it is to be installed. The U PS must be absol utely dry prior to start - up.
13 W hen replacing the battery, the f ollowing mus t be observed: Only ever use an iden tical, m aintenance-free s ealed lead battery with the sam e data as the original batter y. Danger! Explosive ! Never throw b atteries into open fire. Never open or dam age batteries.

The CE m ark on the unit confirm s compliance with the EC outline directives f or 73/23 EEC – L ow voltage and f or 89/336 EEC – Electrom agnetic com patibility if the instal lation instructions describ ed in the oper ating instructions are observed.

20 5 Inst allation and Operation 5.1 Check Remove the UPS from its transport pac kaging a nd ch eck that it has not been dam aged in transit. If you f ind an y d amage, pack the unit up again and send i t back to where you purchased it.
21 5.3 Charging The PROTECT A. is supplied with its battery fully charged. Nevertheless, energ y m ay have been lost during trans port, s o the batter y should be full y recharged befor e it is used for the first time. Con ne ct the inpu t of the UPS (no.
22 i Note that the additional output sock et identified in white has a special pr operty (chapter 4.3 / n o. 6 / pg.19). This is alwa y s live irrespec tive of the other outputs. It is not back ed up b y the U PS, nor c an it be s witched of f using the main switch of the UPS.

28 7 Maintenance The PROT ECT A. consists of state-of-the-ar t, non-w earing components. W e do, however, recomm end regular visual checks of the u nit to m aintain its co ntinuous ava ilabilit y and operational reliab ility.
29 7.1 Battery Replacement ATTENTIO N: A batter y can cause an elec tric shock, and represents a consid erable hazard if ha ndled incorrectl y. The following precaution s s hould be taken before the batter y is renewed. ♦ Switch off the UPS and disc onnect the mains cabl e from the sock et.
30 8 Sto rage and Dis posal Storage Long s torage tim es without charging or discharging th e batter y at r egular interv als ma y lead to perm anent damage of the batter y. If the batter y is stored at room temperature ( 20° C to 30° C) it will autom atically disc harge at a rate of 3- 6% per m onth due to in ternal reactions.
