4 Removal and replacement procedures Preliminary replacement requirements Tools required You will need the following tools to comple te the removal and re placement procedures: ● Flat-bla ded screw .
Cables and connectors CAUTION: When servicing the computer, be sure that c ables are placed in their proper locations during the reassembly p rocess. Improp er cable placem ent can damage th e computer. Cables must be handle d with extreme care to avoid damage.
Grounding guidelines Electrostatic discharge damage Electronic componen ts are sensit ive to electrost atic discharge (ESD). Circuitry design and st ructure determine the deg ree of sensitiv ity.
Packaging and transporting guidelines Follow these groun ding guidelines when packaging and transp orting equipment: ● To avoid hand contact, transport products in static-safe tubes, bags, or boxes. ● Protect ESD-sensitive parts an d assemblies wi th conductive or approv ed containe rs or packaging.
Equipment guidelines Grounding equi pment must include either a wrist strap o r a foot strap at a grou nded workstation. ● When seated, wear a wrist strap connected to a grounded system. Wrist straps are flexibl e straps with a minimu m of one megohm ±1 0% resi stance in the ground cords.
Component replacement procedures This chapter provides removal an d replacement proced ures. There are as many as 7 2 screws that must be removed, replaced , or loosened when servicing the computer. Make special note of each screw size and location du ring removal and rep lacement.

2. Lift the processor (2) straight up and remove it. NOTE: The gold tria ngle (3) on the processor must be aligned with the tria ngle embossed o n the processor slot when you inst all the processor.

3. Remove the memory module (3) by pul ling the module a way from the slot at an angle. NOTE: The memory modu le is designed with a no tch (4) to prevent incorrect insertion into the memory module slot. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the memory module.

5. Remove the module (3) . 6. If the Bluetooth module cable must be replaced, discon nect the cable fr om the Bluetooth module. Reverse the abov e procedur e to install the Blueto oth module.

3. Pull the module (3) away from the sl ot at an angle. NOTE: WWAN modules are designed with a notch (4) to prevent incorrect inse rtion. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the WWAN module.

4. If it is necessary to replace the dr ive connector, remove the connector (3) from the drive. 5. If it is nece s sary to replac e the drive bracket, remove th e two Phillips M3.0x3.0 screws (1) on each side of the drive, and then lift the brac ket (2) away from the drive.

Remove the keyboard: 1. Loosen the three Phillip s M2.0x8.0 captive screw s that secure the keyb oard to the computer. 2. Turn the computer right-side up, and then open the display. 3. Carefully position the open compute r on its left side, and then press on the keyboard through the opening wher e the fan was remo ved.

5. Pull the wireless cables (6) away from syst em board. 6. Remove the Phillips M2.0x4.0 screw (1) that secures the system board to the top cover. Use the optical drive con nector (2) to lift the lef t side of the system board until it rests at an angle, and then remove the system board (3) .
Top cover NOTE: The top cover spare pa rt kit includes the TouchPad board an d cable, TouchPad button board and cable, and TouchPad bracket. Description Spare part num ber For use only on computer mod.
4. Slide the top cover toward you and then lift the cover (5) u p to remo ve it. 5. If it is necessary to replace the TouchPad, remove the two Phil lips M2.0x3.0 screws (1) that secure the TouchPad to the top cover. 6. Slide the TouchPad away from you until the f ront edge (2) clears the lip of the top cover.

4. Remove the display bezel (4) . The display bezel is available usin g spare part number 651366-001 (for use on ly with computer mo dels equipped with a webcam) and 651365-001 (for use only with computer models n o t equipped with a webcam). CAUTION: The display enclosure will be unsupported when the screws are removed.
8. Gently lift the display enclosure (2 ) away from display panel, which rests on the keyboard. 9. Lift the tape (3) that secu res the display cable to the back of th e display panel. 10. Remove the cable from th e display panel (4) . 11. Remove the two Phillip s M3.
Display components NOTE: For removal of the d isplay panel alo ne, see Di splay panel on page 77 ). To remove internal display components, remove the display panel, and then continue with the proc edures in this section.
3. Remove the webcam module (3) . To replace the outer h inge covers, the in ner hinge co vers, or the hing es and brackets, follow these steps: 1. Pull the display brackets (1) toward the outside edges of the display enclosure, an d remove the brackets (2) .
5 Computer Setup Starting Computer Setup Computer Setup is a preinstalled, ROM-based utility that can be used even when the operating system is not working or will not load. NOTE: Some of the Computer Setu p menu items listed in this guide may no t be supported by your computer.

7 Backup and recovery Windows 7 To protect you r information, use Windows Backup and Restor e to back up individu al files and folder s, back up your entire hard drive (sel ect models only), create system repair discs (select models only), or create system restore points.

Using a Windows 7 operating syst em DVD (purchased separately) If you are unable to boot (start up) your computer and you cannot use the system repair discs you previously c reated (sele ct models on ly), you mu st purchase a Windows 7 operating syste m DVD to reboot the computer and repair the operating system .

As you add new software and data file s, you should continue to back up your system on a regular basis to maintain a re asonably current backup.
